Looking for a good quality White Tea available in the UK

Hi there!

Nice to find and join the discuss forum here.

I usually drink Clipper White Tea from China but I recently heard the heavy metal content of the soil can effect the tea and potentially harmful to health.

I drink about 4-6 mugs of White tea per day and I’d prefer to avoid nasty white tea that could be harmful. I’ve heard White tea from India has much less metal content.

Does anyone know of a decent tea supplier here in the UK?

Many thanks!

what-cha.com It’s in the UK. Great tea selection with unusual teas from different countries. All UK orders above £14 qualify for free shipping.

That’s brilliant! Thank you so much for the recommendation. I typically use 6 White tea bag per day. How long would you say 250g would last me?

Forever :) I recommend ordering several samples for a few teas before going all in on one tea. Samples are about 10g.

What-cha sells loose leaf. The leaf can be steeped multiple times. So 1 tsp can go a long way. For example, out of a 10g sample, I’ve been able to get 3-4 sessions and re-steeping multiple times per session.

Thank you very much for your help. Pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by ‘sessions’?

Each session begins when you use new leaves. Good quality tea leaves can be re-steeped multiple times, so you could drink several mugs of tea before you must use tea leaves and start the next “session”.

Hawkband1 means each session yield about 3 cups of tea and you get 3-4 sessions which adds up to 9-12 total mugs of tea.

For me, a session is time spent drinking a tea without re-leafing. Re-steeping the same leaves until either I’m done or tea runs out of flavor.

Last night I had a session with a green tea. 1tsp/8oz water. I steeped it 4 times. I possibly could have gotten more steeps out of the leaf, but I was tired and stopped.

Ah thanks for making that clear. That’s great too as I drink a lot of tea! For health and enjoyment :)

White tea, oolong and Pu’reh especially if you arent resteeping, you could be missing the best experience. Also who wants to spend more money on tea that you need to… well.. okay maybe some of us do, but resteeping is still good

Bai Mu Dan (white peony) and Silver needle, usually have their best experience in the second steeping.

Unless you know the company has been testing their tea, any place can be loaded with metals etc. There was a huge thing a few months back of tea farms in India with poor working conditions and people crapping in the fields. You don’t know unless you know the vendor is good, so you should not blanket all Chinese teas are full of metals.

I’d suggest checking out Teavivre, their prices are good, shipping is cheap and they got testing certificates. http://www.teavivre.com/

Yunnan Sourcing is also great, cheap and has EU complaince http://yunnansourcing.com/

Great, thank you for pointing me to those. I’ll perhaps place an order with Teavivre for 200g worth. It’s only £4 or so for 3-5 day shipping which is very good.

I just ordered the silver needle sampler from Teavivre, Ill put up tasting notes when it ships after the post office is back from chinese new year holiday, because this sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

Its 5 sets of different silver needles each at 10 grams.

@Oolong Owl. For your reference the standard test certificates that the vendors mentioned provide cover pesticides; not heavy metals, or possibly the most common agro-chemical used internationally on all produce, Glyphosate (commonly available as Roundup™, by those lovely folks at Monsanto), which is a herbicide.

Unfortunately as you point out, heavy metals are an issue internationally, not just in China.

Besides Yunnan Sourcing, I get my white teas from Hojo Tea. He personally verifies each tea and sources them himself. Puts in a lot of legwork. I trust they are clean of heavy metals, he has high standards for quality. Once you taste them you’ll be hooked. Order by emailing [email protected]

Hello! Sasha and I are baesd in Lodnon and we stock 2 white teas, out of the 5 teas we’ve spent 4.5 years meticulously sourcing (bai hao silver needle and jasmine baihao silver needle from a tea garden in the Fujian province). These are very light in flavour, as they are the 1st teas to be picked in the year (so before it gains tannins and becomes more astringent) and only the buds are collected. Silver needle has a very distinct flavour. The jasmine silver needle is the silver needle laid out onto a bed of night jasmine flowers for 8 – 12 consecutive nights, so that’s light and refreshing as well.

We also have a green tea (dragonwell), whose main tasting note is roasted chestnut with a citrucy note – I really like it.

We also do 20% off on all repeat orders.

Plus all of our profits now go to charity. We’ll also be going to Nepal to help re-build shelters for people! :)
