Bed time and sleep teas?

Hi there. Sometimes I enjoy having an herbal bedtime tea, but have yet to find any blends I like aside from the grocery store brands tea bags. Sleepy Time tea is a favorite, chamomile and lavender, one has vallarian root, etc. You know the stuff, Celestial Seasons, Twinings and all the organic brands in the natural food aisle. I like them all, but would love to have a loose brand for my collection. These are the only tea bags left in my collection because I like them so much and haven’t see any similar loose. I ordered a sleep tea by Baetea once and it smelled and tasted like perfume. No thanks. I may use it for potpourri ;) Any suggestions?

I hear warm milk can be very relaxing.

That is if you can digest it.

Take a little bit at a time and build up to it. The bacteria have switch on their genes for digesting lactose. We are mammals. You might also try adding yoghurt to your diet.

Some people can’t digest lactose, it is called Lactose Intolerance, and it is a medical fact. You can’t “build up” to digesting it if you are lactose intolerant. And it is only normal for mammals to drink milk when they are infants.

People lose the ability to digest lactose because they haven’t had milk in a while. The bacteria turn off the enzymes. Drink a little milk each day and your stomach will adjust.

Milk is a highly valuable food source, one of the most important because it contains all of the above: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and of course calcium.

Milk should be drunk over an entire lifetime along with the consumption of yoghurt and cheese.

Lactose free milk is a temporary solution.

I drink a liter of milk at a time with no problem at all. And I could do that everyday.

You don’t know what the F*** you are talking about. You don’t get lactose intolerant because you stop drinking milk. Most people who are diagnosed with lactose intolerance were drinking milk when they were diagnosed and a doctor told them to stop. Stop spouting idiocy everywhere you go.

mammals that produce milk, only do so for the time period which the infant needs it to grow healthy; after that, they do not need milk. you could develop lactose intolerance by drinking too much (like a litre/day lol) but i dont think you can by not drinking it.. im proof of that, haha.

Cow’s milk tolerance is a genetic adaptation. You can get a DNA test to find out whether you have the digestive ability or not. My sister had hers done, and we have it. We come from generations of dairy farmers, and are adapted perfectly for milk and milk products. It takes many generations to get the proper digestion. Many southeast Asians do not have the digestive ability, and would require a digestive aid to have ice cream, for example.

I am from Wisconsin and Europe before that, and in fact I require dairy simply to feel well. Of course there are medical conditions which, even if you have the correct DNA, can interfere with digesting many things. A sibling may be able to tolerate milk fine, while another with a medical condition needs to avoid it.

There is historical evidence for the theory that the Vikings were driven out of North America by the natives because they gave the native peoples milk to drink. This made them all very sick as native peoples did not have milk after they were weaned. The natives thought they had been poisoned and drove the Vikings back into the sea.

Lactose intolerance can be a spectrum. I am fine with most dairy products, but a cup of straight milk doesn’t make me feel too good. However, if the milk is mixed with other things like in a smoothie it seems alright (maybe it’s a volume thing.)

MrQuackers may have a point. I also feel worse when I drink milk when I haven’t had milk for a while, but feel not too bad if I had been consuming it more often in the weeks or so before. Generally, this is if I have to for coffee meetings and whatnot (don’t like soy milk.)

In any case I buy lactose-free milk as it is absolutely fine on my stomach, and tastes sweeter too.

I’m lactose intolerant—I developed issues in my teens (14-15), and I had been having cereal and milk every morning, and drinking 12 oz of milk every afternoon my entire life up to that point. I still ended up lactose intolerant in a bad way (and had no idea why I had occasional upset tummies/flatulence/bloating/diarrhea up until my 30s!).

I have been trying to raise my base lactase levels and edging my milk consumption up slowly does seem to help. I was up to six tablespoons of milk every morning before I flew out to Nepal last week, and my body had adjusted to it.

The last time I had too much lactose before bedtime I was in bad shape. Basically like food poisoning, but with serious bloating, night sweats and all!

I agree that stopping milk consumption entirely makes it worse. I can handle ice cream fine, unless I overdo it, but drinking a half pint of milk will have my insides churning.

The sweetness in lactose-free milk is because the lactose has been broken down to glucose…not the healthiest thing if you’re watching your carb intake/diabetic!

I have a diary sensitivity but not lactose intolerant. When I drink or eat anything dairy, I cough a lot and become congested. Depending on how much I eat , it could last for 1 day or a few days. I even had this when I had tiny tiny amounts of dairy. Also allergic to chamomile and flavourings (artificial and natural). I stick to natural herbs for the evening: Peppermint, rose buds, nettle. Buckwheat tea is also good. None of those make me sleepy though

I would recommend Organic Egyptian Chamomile from DavidsTea. From personal experience, it is very relaxing, physically and mentally, and even makes me feel a bit woozy after drinking a full cup! It’s very nice!

I like to stick to individual flowers and herbs, such as lavender (most effective for me), lemongrass, chrysanthemum, rose, lemongrass, mint, and others. Sometimes I’ll throw a bit of each into a teapot to create my own blend. For professionally made blends, I have liked DavidsTea’s Mother’s Little Helper, Teavivre’s Bucolic Jasmine, and Tea District’s Sleeping Beauty.

Personally, I used this one for a fairly long time. I eventually got sick of it; but it did the trick up until then.

If you like a citrus twist to chamomile then “Mother’s Bouquet” from Harney and Sons is a good one. You can taste more orange in the mix, very pretty look to the tea bags as it looks like a bouquet in a bag, and has a lovely citrus scent.

My NiteTeaNite is quite popular at my store. Feedback from customers as well as repurchases tell me that it is a successful blend.

I bought a lb of organic French lavender and a lb of organic French chamomile and mixed em up…I now have about a decade’s worth of sleepytime tea for $40 (and I rarely if ever drink it)!

After looking at everything I think that’s what I’m going to do, but chamomile and lavender and mix it myself, plus I have lots of spearmint so I’ll add that too :)I have actually only had Chamomile in super market tea bags which are little particles so it should be interesting to see what it really tastes like getting the whole flower and much fresher! And yeah, it amazing me how cheap these bulk herbs and flowers are!

TeaLife.HK said

I’d hold off on mixing the mint in and try it with the other two and see if it works for you! It would be terrible if you mixed up lbs of herbs and then didn’t like the flavor profile after, no? Real chamomile buds are wayyyy more flavorful than the teabag stuff!

I like the way chamomile makes me feel, but not necessarily the taste, so the Plum Deluxe Cuddletime blend is nice because it adds vanilla and mint. Very calming.

I also like fruit teas before bed, like a blood orange or peach. Pureblend has a nice blood orange. I guess it appeals to my sweet tooth. ;)
