Daughter and I love Lapsang, especially on a dreary fall or winter day. So comforting. Youngest has loved it since she was really young, which I thought was odd. Said she couldn’t have made it through algebra and geometry without it.

Most lapsangs are just too ocerpoweringly smokey for me, but I do like Russian Caravan blends which have just a hint of smoke to them.

I haven’t tried much of it but I keep ordering batches of it from Zen Tea Life – really like that one. Not sure how high it rates on the smokiness level since I haven’t tried many of them, anyone know? Love the taste of this one though. My friend says the smell reminds her of Epcot park ran by Disney when you go through the countries ride area. We sit there and sniff it, amazing.

One of my favourite black teas.
Lapsang Souchong has a lower caffeine content then most other black teas because of the aged leaves.

It is a great breakfast tea for the morning’s and doesn’t go down to badly with eggs Royale.

I tried and reviewed a “wild” unsmoked Lapsang Souchong a couple months back from my favorite tea maker, Cindy Chen, that was something different than I’ve experienced. It had an orange-zest citrus element, something I’ve never noticed in any other version I’ve tried (not that I’ve tried so many). Others I’ve tried were only malty, but mild compared to more astringent black tea types that come across as having that as a primary element. Smoked versions are sort of completely different, not only because the smoke would tend to cover more subtle aspects, but they seem to prepare the teas to be less subtle to begin with. If you don’t want it too smoky, W2T has a decent enough traditional Lapsang Souchong, I haven’t really tried other LS to judge the relative merits though.

I’ve only had smoky Lapsang Souchong, and I quite love it. The smokiness is very nostalgic for me. And the one that I’ve tried has a very smooth finish. It was very unexpected for a tea of such strong aroma. I’ll have to find an un-smoked lapsang souchong to compare. He-he!
