scary teapot situation!

What does it mean when you pour hot water in your yixing teapot and before and after you put the lid on, you hear a humming/buzzing noise? Did I damage it? I put warm water in it to equalize the temp of the pot before adding hot water I’m scared now. It’s creeping me out

It is possible you got a teapot with a defect in it that is causing the noise. Have you used this pot before?

yes with no noise. someone told me this:

“It means your pot is porous and there’s a little air pocket where, because you poured hot water into it, the air is rapidly expanding thus coming out of the pot through the water, which creates the buzzing sound”

he also said its normal. but id like to hear what others think too

I have never heard of a Yixing teapot cracking after firing without someone dropping it etc. So even if there was some minor defect causing the noise I don’t think there is any reason to stop using the pot. You friend’s explanation could be correct too.

Allan, high fired pots crack from boiling water all the time. This is especially common with thin pots made with red clay (hongni or zhuni).

I don’t know if any of my pots are high fired.

I have an yixing that was fired at low temperatures. This firing made the clay very soft and dull compared to other yixings. When I warm my pot up with boiling water the inside makes a slight screeching noise; sometimes I can see bubbles rising from the clay. This is because the clay is soft and porous so small air pockets open up when the clay expands from the heat. No need to be alarmed. The clay will season differently due to it porous surface, but it will not explode, haha.

thank you

thanks everyone! i have come to the conclusion that it was just air bubbles trapped in the pores of the clay
