New to Pu-erh..
Greetings,
I am new to the world of Tea and after watching a number of videos on Pu-erh, I am eager to begin tasting.
I live in New York City and am looking for a recommendation on a Pu-erh to begin my journey. Something basic to get started (not too expensive).

There are many pu’er teas friendly to novices. I started with shou (or ripe) but soon I settled mostly with sheng (raw) pu’er teas. That is probably the recommended sequence I usually give to new Pu’er drinkers as shou tends to be a smoother type of tea.

Two places you could try, http://www.tshopny.com/ which exists as a real store on Elizabeth street just below Houston St in Manhattan. Or http://www.orchidteahouse.com/ also has a physical location, but deep in the heart of Brooklyn. Both extremely worthwhile and knowledgeable tea lovers at their respective helms.

Today I had a tasting at a Tea house in the city that seems to be off the radar..
LC Tea Trading at 123 Elizabeth.
I had a tasting there for $10
That was a great experience. JC and Chen, were both a delight to learn from and drink tea with.
Checked out Orchid tea house a few days ago.

If you are considering online purchases then you can’t beat Yunnan Sourcing. They have two websites, a .com site and a .us site. www.yunnansourcing.com ships from China where www.yunnansourcing.us ships from Oregon. It is run by an American who lived in China for quite a few years so there is no language barrier to the site. Another good site in china i White2Tea. They have less selection but it is generally very good. Another American company is Crimson Lotus Tea. They are very good too.

I checked them out online and bookmarked them for possible future purchases.
Since I live in NYC, before I start ordering online, I’m going to try and find where to purchase great tea in person, within the five boroughs. As I’ve learned this past week, there are many possibilities.

There are a variety of shops to buy tea in the five boroughs. If you go to Queens Fang Gourmet Tea is among the very best. It is a bit of a hole in the wall shop, very small. However they do sampling as a gongfu service for a very reasonable price. Their teas are expensive but good. They sometimes have puerh. There is one shop I would avoid. If memory serves me it is called Sun’s Organic Tea. They sell fakes that they claim are 40 year old tea for $10 an ounce. There is another place called McNultys that isn’t bad for loose leaf. The place sells coffee too and by the smell of it you wouldn’t know they sell tea too. And then Harney and Sons has a shop that is excellent both for buying loose leaf tea or to sit down and have a cup prepared for you without paying a premium.
If you are not afraid of ordering from china, I would recommend White2Tea’s (Little Walk and Brown sugar[the old one]). Both of these teas are very beginner friendly in my opinion.Another option would be tea-drunk.com they are based in ny.
