What Teaware Do You Plan to Buy in 2017

Recently there’s a discussion started on how you will spend on tea in 2017:
http://steepster.com/discuss/14961-2017-how-much-will-you-spend-on-tea-this-year

But what about tea steeping tools? Teapots, mugs, strainers, cups name it. Will you stick with what you have, replace it with a new one, or go more adventures with ceremony-style accessories?

I bought enough tea ware in 2016 (and 2015) that I don’t anticipate any major teaware purchases this year. Maayybe a snazzy teacup or other small tea accessory.

Due to my recent Japan trip, I would like to invest in a side-handle kyusu this year, and maybe a tetsubin haha. Bought some sencha and gyokuro there that I would like to brew up in some pretty Japanese teaware :) any suggestions are welcome! Japanese teas/wares are not my strong suit and I would like to learn more about them!

If you’re looking for a kyusu made from quality clay, check out Hojo Tea’s kyusu’s. you have to email him for orders but he is quick to reply. Personally I’m a big fan of the Shigaraki clay kyusu. http://hojotea.com/item_e/available.htm

If you want pretty looking kyusu’s I suggest Artistic Nippon, again I think you have to email them to get a quote/place an order. http://artisticnippon.com/

Here are some more pretty kyusu’s http://www.yuuki-cha.com/teaware/japanese-teapots

The stuff for sale on Hojotea.com looks nice. But prices are all listed in Japanese Yen. I have no idea whether a teapot I’m looking at is within a reasonable $75 to $150 or is sky high at $500.

Thank you for all the suggestions @andreisto! I will look and lust after them haha quite a few are very nice!

@AllanK – I just convert them on Google with a currency converter to find out the costs today :) although shipping to Canada might also be an issue..I will have to read more on the rates and if it’d doable before considering ordering. I very much like some of the ones on Hojo!

@AllanK, EoT sells in GBP so how is JPY any different? Unless you never ordered from EoT? Also not sure if I understood your comment, but it sounds like maybe you’re looking for a standard to compare Hojo’s teapots to, in order to determine value? (such as exists in the yixing world) But I am not sure you’ll find anything solid, except maybe appreciation for the process he goes through to make his pots, or the teapot artist’s name. Hojo hunts his own clays, commissions the artists to process the clays and make teapots to his specifications. Essentially, his lineup is privately commissioned teapots from clean quality clay that he sourced and tested himself. Sort of a “farm to table” approach to teaware. Here is an interesting article on the lengths he goes through in the search for clay. I think its a neat read, even if you’re not in the market for one of his teapots. http://hojotea.com/en/posts-110/

I might buy shibo or a kyusu. There was one at teaware.house that I had my eye on. Otherwise, I’m good for a while.

All depends on what comes up for sale or if new stuff gets put out that is too cool to resist. Otherwise all I am really looking for is a second curio shelf to display the teaware I already have.

I have far too many teapots and cups. But if I see one I like I’ll buy it. I prefer the handmade items that by definition are unique and won’t be repeated, so I need to snap then up. I had a side handle japanese Teapot arrive yesterday from an artist I have a few pieces from. I’m waiting on a wooden tea table with a water catcher underneath for gong fu brewing. New items this year may be clay jars for pu erh storage. I’ve also been reading and watching videos from global tea hut about “bowl tea” which seems appealing… so whilst I have a couple of bowls, I may be tempted to get another. It’s really never ending!

I bought far too much teaware in 2016. I won’t buy any pots unless I feel they’re a good long-term investment or if I feel they make exceptional tea. I’m putting modern Yixing pots up soon and trying them to see if they’re worthy of sale. One of the pots I’ve tried so far is so good I think I need to keep one for myself! It performs very, very well and the clay very closely mimics the qingshuini of old, which is my favorite of the Yixing clays.

Wei, no, I have a good cargo agent directly across the border now and can buy directly from studios in Yixing at a much lower cost than before, but not as cheap as if I were on the Mainland because of payment processing fees and the extra cargo fee to transport products across the border.

I will be putting the wendan pot I mentioned up for sale in a week or two if I feel it is worthy! It made some rough, standard grade tieluohan much more pleasant to drink than in porcelain, but I want to see how it performs after more use. The TLH does not meet my standards in a gaiwan at all, but is actually palatable (and even enjoyable) in this pot.

I want to thoroughly test it first. The pot might actually be good for both oolongs and traditional storage pu erh, but I won’t know until I test it further. :) So far though I am very impressed with it. It looks good, pours well (and fast), has no off odors whatsoever, and makes excellent tea. I don’t know if it will mute as much as it does now after it is broken in.

Granted I’m a ways off from purchasing any of the following, but I would like to buy a couple of Sichuan-style gaiwans to add to my collection, as well as a new tea tray, a few extra gongfu cups, and a celadon tea set.

I have way too much teaware already. I have no specific plans to buy any teaware but if I come across something I really like I will probably end up buying it. What I do not plan is any more silver teapots. Bought two this year and I can’t see myself investing in another. One of the two sees an awful lot of use however so I don’t regret spending the money on it. Luckily you do not need to dedicate a silver pot to one type of tea.

Do you brew less in porcelain and clay now?

In the past four months or so I’ve bought three tea trays, multiple clay pots of different sizes. Same with glass pots, and gaiwans. Of course I also have a puehr tray, pick, and a couple scales. There’s more, but you get the idea. It started with wanting a set up in my kitchen. Then I remembered I hang out in another room in my house a lot, so needed a setup in there. THEN I decided that there is no reason to brew tea badly at work so I now have a complete setup in my locker that I can use when I’m able. At this point I don’t need anything new, but that doesnt mean I won’t be looking around when I’m out, and if I find something nice, I’m sure I won’t think twice about adding it to what I already have.
