Tea Latte Help!!

Hey everyone. Today I attempted to make a latte from 52 Teas’ Coconut Cream Pie Black Tea. Heres what I did: 2 perfect spoonfuls of tea (2.5 tsp each) 1/2 cup of hot water for about 6 mins. Poured into a 16 ounce travel mug and then filled mug with cold milk. Added a splash of agave. It tasted like sweet milk with the faintest little hint of coconut. Im so sad. I want to make a bomb coconut cream pie latte. Its like my mission. Does anyone have a good system for tea lattes that they will share with me? TYIA -Sophia

Hey Sophia,

I work at DAVIDsTEA and this is what we do for our in store lattes:

Four perfect spoons of tea in roughly 8 oz. of water. We use the the 18 oz. steepers in store, and with that particular steeper the amount of water works out to just above the “DAVIDsTEA” logo on it. We let that steep at whatever time and temperature the tea would normally steep for, and then when it gets strained into the mug we’re drinking it out of/cup it’s being served in we just top up the balance of the cup with steamed milk (another roughly 8 oz. of milk).

Personally, I find the four perfect spoons a little excessive for a lot of blends so for myself I generally opt for three perfect spoons. Honestly, it just sounds like you need a bit more leaf to get a more full flavour though. Keep experimenting! You’ll find something that works for you.

Dang, that is a lot of tea. Edit, wait that makes sense, it’s 16oz.

I’m not familiar with that tea, but if it tasted weak my guess is the milk diluted it too much.

When I make matcha lattes I aim for a 1:1 ratio of tea to milk. So if you brewed a 1/2 cup of tea, start with a 1/2 cup of milk. Taste it first and then add milk little by little, tasting as you go, until it reaches your desired strength.

I agree with others who’ve suggested more leaf and less milk. I’d also recommend warming your milk (15 seconds in the microwave usually does it for me). And if you really want to get fancy, try frothing the milk up a bit for the real coffee shop latte feel. You can buy fancy milk frothers, but I have a little $2 battery-powered whisk from IKEA that works great!

Here’s my old guide. http://oolongowl.com/how-to-make-an-easy-tea-latte/ yeah, for 16oz I think you need to double the tea similar to what Ros suggested.

Coconut might also be the culprit. Coconut is creamy sweet tasting, it might of gotten lost in the milk.
