Do you have a tea budget?

I try to keep to making large purchases (100 or more) 4 times a year but I do get caught up getting bag or two in between esp when I have time to relax at the local tea shop or on travel. I’m trying to get organized w/ my research and personnel inventory so I buy the teas I like most in largest quantities to last and keep my habit in control LOL

Answering the post, calculation is simple as the retailer I purchase from, keeps a record of my orders which I can easily look up online.

As for the budget, I should have one but I do not. Meaning, I have not set any parameters for the amount of tea I buy. For this year, it teeters on absurd as the amount of money I have spent on tea is USD2000.

I won’t calculate how much I have spent on tea this year. I’d rather not know how out of control I’ve been. I never set a tea allowance. I just buy when I want to buy. :)

And don’t even ask me to calculate what I’ve spent on teapots, teacups & saucers over the last year!

Uh, yeah. What you said. Some things are just better not to know. I look at my overflowing tea cupboard and know I ought to set a budget, but instead I think how awesome it is that I have all this fantastic tea. And then I think how much more fantastic tea there is in the world, and that makes me happy. Making a budget would make me sad, since it limits (in theory) the amount of that fantastic tea I can buy.

Camiah, that’s exactly how I feel! I can’t put a budget on something that makes me happy.

I don’t have a budget for tea or most things. I try to purchase new teas when I can snag some cash out of what is not needed right away. I purchase teas on impulse if there is fund. Right now I am very low on teas and most other things.

Writing does not pay at all especially when invisible and lazy. My household has been suffering ever since I have ventured on this Internet tirade…it has done harm than good. But I am not able to stop returning. Most sad.

Answer to question: No tea budget, but purchase when I can.

I mostly try to stick to a one-in, one-out policy. I’ve recently cleared out more space, though, so I’m splurging right now.

The Seattle Tea Snob you are a brave one to look over your spending. For me, ignorance is bliss! I was recently upset at a loved one for gambling, yet I’m sure I’ve spent at least $400 over the past couple of months on tea. Yeah, that’s not as much as you’ve spent but its A LOT for me to spend on a brand new interest. I think the initial outlay is high because I started with nothing- no tea balls, no mugs, no nothin’. Now I’m the proud owner of an electric tea kettle ($40), rock sugar, organic honey, agave nectar, metal tins, 2 ceramic mugs with infusers and lids, a 40 oz thermos (and searching for a new, improved one), about 10 tea balls, and about 15 different teas (and counting). If my partner asked me how much I’ve spent on my tea habit I would truly be embarrassed to say.

All of my friends and family tried to stage an intervention on my tea spending. Then I started a tea company to finance the habit. :) I just wrote an article: “An Open Letter in Defense of the Tea Budget,” aimed at those people in our lives who question our tea spending. I think making room for fine tea actually saves money in the long run. http://verdanttea.com/an-open-letter-in-defense-of-the-tea-budget/

Awesome article thanks

I should email that to my family and friends who think my tea obsession is weird and costs too much!

Very nice. I haven’t had to justify anything yet, but if I do, I will now come well-armed.

Many Thanks! My goal was to give us tea lovers a bit of defense to justify our spending, and I am glad to see that the article will be used well.

Occasionally I will have to justify to myself why I am spending so much on pu’er, etc, but the real culprit is Yixing pottery. If you ever go to China, be very careful about falling in love with Yixing, or you may find yourself with substantially less savings on hand.

I should have a tea budget, heh. We’re probably spending $100/mo at this point. But everything’s still shiny and new.

Same here!

I don’t buy that much new tea a month, but if it’s particular tea I covet I will pay whatever amount is asked.

I don’t have a tea budget yet as i’m fairly new to drinking loose tea. I suspect that in the near future i’ll need to have one though so that i actually go through the tea in my house before i buy new tea!
