Don't like honey in tea

I had a cup of Darjeeling at Steak N Shake this morning. I usually really enjoy it. My son convinced me to add honey (Smuckers) to it instead of my usual yellow packet. Eechh. To me it didn’t brighten the flavor it changed it and not in a good way. I believe if my only choice was honey or nothing I could break my sweet addiction. Am I alone in my dislike of honey?

While I don’t like most sweeteners in tea most of the time, I’d say that honey is probably the worst of them. Did I make sense? it can overwhelm the tea and leaves a funny after taste. And at times, I feel that the tea is ruining the honey. I don’t know why so many tea makers recommend honey as a sweetener.

I do think honey can work in fruit teas sometimes, but in the end brown rock sugar is better.

I usually only use honey when I am making chai over the stove. I would never put honey in other teas though….it changes the taste too much for me.

I like honey in some teas, but not all. Mostly I like them in roobios teas or herbal teas. For black or flavored teas I tend to like Sugar in the Raw or nothing at all. And for green & white teas, I like agaves most of the time.

I think the honey can be too sweet for some teas or leave that after taste.

I usually don’t add sugar or sweetener to tea until I’ve tasted it, but if I feel it needs something, then I usually reach for turbinado sugar. I do use honey on occasion, but
I’m picky about my honey. I don’t like the conventional, commercial honey and I don’t like to add it to my tea. I prefer raw honey that has been locally harvested, and I like this in tea, but not in all tea. I’ll add it to chai on occasion (although I do usually prefer turbinado sugar for my chai), and to herbal blends. I find that in other teas, it really overwhelms the flavor, just as Mercuryhime mentioned. It really just depends not only on the tea I’m drinking but the type of honey it is.

I used to use honey a lot more often than I do now. When I first started drinking tea, that was how I’d prepare it, but, after a couple of years, I realized that it really does alter the tea too much. So there are only a select few teas to which I’ll add honey.

I rarely sweeten tea, but if I do I prefer to use a VERY small drop of local honey. I feel it does change the taste of the tea, but if I am adding sweetener that is exactly what I want (as the tea was too yucky as is). I’m not much for sugar and really don’t like artificial sweeteners, so it’s honey for me. If that makes sense! : )

I never sweeten hot teas to begin with (if you use good quality tea and steep it right, then there is no need to sweeten)… and I don’t like the taste of honey… so I never understood why people offer honey or agave nectar or even maple syrup as a way to sweeten tea.

I have heard some say that honey, agave, and/or maple syrup is better with chai. Still, I just don’t understand it…

The only tea that I take with honey is Bai Mu Dan. Something about this tea actually stands out better with the honey. Most of my other experiments I’ve had with additives have ended badly.

I totally agree about honey in tea. I prefer to use agave nectar light…it does not change the flavor of the tea, but a light hand is needed even with this nectar. The only reason that use any type of sweetener is to enhance the tea base. You know what they say, “each to their own!”

I buy the tea from the farm across the street from my home. It’s a local grown & made honey which I love. Plus I’ve heard that people with allergies should eat more locally grown honey. It’s supposed to help calm your allergies.

@SunnyinNY – I believe this to be true also (about calming allergies). I never really had allergies until I moved up here to the Pacific Northwest, but now I have them in full force. I’ve been using locally harvested honey, and it has helped. It hasn’t gotten rid of them completely, though, but it definitely helps.

I’ve noticed my allergies have lessened since using the local honey. And when I go out on the Island to my family, they also have locally grown honey. I find myself using theirs now too & I’m sure by this spring when I am out there I will be happy.

I usually avoid honey because it has too much of a flavor in my opinion. Adding honey to a tea is adding a new flavor in my opinion. I usually only add honey to tea with apple in it or herbals (I love it with peppermint).
