My wonderful cousin was out of town where the nearest DAVIDsTEA is & picked me up a nice portion of my wish list.

50g of each
Exotica
Luscious Watermelon
Mango Madness
Pink Flamingo
Pom Power
Swampwater
Tropicalia
& a small tin of Jolly Jelly Bean
Total= 61.85

So excited, now to see if I can wait another week & a half till she comes home :(

oh man, I’ve had all of those except Pink Flamingo (I do have a full bag though, just haven’t gotten around to trying it) and those are all some amazing teas for drinking iced!

Kittenna said 2012-07-03 19:37:03 -0400

Yum! I have my bag of Swampwater sitting downstairs on the counter, awaiting cold-brewing/icing. I should really do that with the last of my Pom Power too (since I wasn’t a big fan of it hot, at all.)

Oh yes I definetly chose these so I could ice them! YUM can’t wait

Madeline Alyce said 2012-07-03 20:13:51 -0400

I think it originally was supposed to be a social shout-out promo, but since the link was wonky they opened it up to just automatically update the cart to 50% off.

Yep, just double checked website and it’s 50% off through tomorrow, I believe (it says until Dec. 31 but I think that’s wrong!) http://www.carawaytea.com/

Babble said 2012-07-03 20:31:43 -0400

Oh geez. Why did you have to tell me about this? So tempting. Wish the lowest amount wasn’t 4 oz. Have you heard anything about this company?

I haven’t heard anything from them, but their customer service has impressed me already. They responded back ASAP when I had an issue with the original promo link, then opened up the promo to all. Figured for 50% off I could give it a try! It makes it come to like ~$5 or 6 for 4oz which is a bargain even if it ends up just being a tea for guests ;) I’ll let you know how my teas are, or send you some samples if you’d like! You’d miss out on this promo if you waited to taste the ones I bought but you’d know for next time?! :)

Thanks to Azzrian finding that extra 20% off code I decided to place the order I made up earlier
I got sample sizes of Berried Treasure, Champagne Raspberry White, Cherry Sakura, Chocolate Cream, Mean Green Tangerine, Gyokuro, Orange Creamsicle, and Yuzu Berry Sencha…plus that same bamboo yixing teapot for $25.18 with free shipping.

I was going to hold off until I got back from Florida to even think about a yixing pot but no way I was going to pass that up now.

Small
Babble said 2012-07-04 00:14:47 -0400

Is that Yixing pot a good deal? I’m thinking of biting.. You can only use Yixing for one type of tea, though, right?

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 00:20:16 -0400

AWESOME Amanda! :) Yeah it is a great deal! I just hope it is a good quality yixing but really that is a fair price even for a so so one.

Rachel – you can use a yixing for as many teas as you want – it is a personal thing really – some people use it for one TYPE of tea such as oolong, or pu-erh, others may use their yixing for not only one type but one specific tea! It is totally up to you but please be sure to check the other threads here by doing a simple search on yixing to learn more about them, and you need to season them too. Verdant has a good blog post on this.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 00:21:08 -0400

I should say that it is a fair price for even a so-so yixing pot WITH the discount. I don’t know if I would have paid the full price before emailing them to ask some questions about it.

Small
Babble said 2012-07-04 00:32:06 -0400

Another silly question – is there a reason you both ordered the yixing bamboo style? Or is it just style preference?

Small
momo said 2012-07-04 00:36:26 -0400

style preference, I couldn’t decide between that one and the one called yellow round.

Yeah I didn’t like that there’s absolutely no information on even the size. But worst thing that happens I use it as kind of a “decanting vessel” for gaiwan brewing if it’s too big for what I want. I really just want one around 6-7oz so worst thing that happens, I buy another at Epcot or from one of the places around here where I can at least see it first.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 00:39:51 -0400

Haha those are the EXACT two I narrowed it down to. There was another I also thought was a cute IDEA but decided it was not for me. They only had four to choose from.
Now I need a sharing vessel hahaha.
Amanda – that would be HORRIBLE if you found another at Epcot!
LOL
Grab me one while your at it we have the same taste!

Small
momo said 2012-07-04 00:44:08 -0400

Haha, if I find one there that’s reasonable I’ll probably get it. The ones this tea shop has start at $45 but I’m sure the one I like is at the higher end of their pricing. I’d like to see it in person first, but worst thing that happens with this one is I don’t like it and put it on ebay or something. To me it only cost about $10 because I was really considering those sample teas even without the pot.

Small
Butiki Teas said 2012-07-04 00:53:19 -0400

Ha, I bought a yixing at Epcot too. Couldn’t help myself. I have a slight yixing and also a Hagi ware addiction. When I brought it back though, it did not pass the pour test or the beaded water test. Oh well. I still use it. Have you guys checked out Ebay? I’ve sold a few of my used pots on there for $.99-$5.99 and I see great deals on there all the time. Personally, I like to dedicate each pot to a specific tea. That way the patina is from that tea only and adds to the flavor of the tea.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 00:54:34 -0400

Exactly! I mean that was probably the most EPIC deal I have come across so far in my tea buying experiences – other than totally free samples of course. Oh wait and Persimmon Tree Tea – that is epic too!
But its like I got the tea for free after the discounts!
I am so happy you went ahead and ordered your stuff!
Yeah I also tend to hit the higher end of the wish list myself on things – I am trying to stop doing that and force myself to fall in love with the less expensive yixing pots.
Oh which tea do you plan to use this one for? I think I will use it for Oolongs.

Small
momo said 2012-07-04 01:02:05 -0400

Aw, I figured it’d be a good shot there but it’ll be worth a shot. I only found out yesterday there was even a shop with them over there (and I go in about 9 days lol) and my boyfriend was like “is this one of the reasons you wanted to go to Epcot over anywhere else?” So funny.
I’ve looked on eBay before, but I’m never very good at checking up frequently to catch good deals on anything, I know I should try harder especially for one of these pots. Previously mentioned boyfriend has the skills for this, I should just make him do it for me.

I plan to use it for oolongs too.

Is that a good price for the medium Finnium Brew basket (50% off 8.25 =4.12)? I’ve heard good things about it, but I don’t know if it’s such a great deal and I should get it from this site.

Argh – I’m so torn. I want to order this, but the last thing I need is more tea :’(

Small

Small
Babble said 2012-07-04 13:25:47 -0400

Ugh – now you’re making me think I should order more than one brew basket. I’m still unsure about the yixing. I know it’s a good deal, but I don’t know if I would take care of it well enough..

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 00:57:51 -0400

Small
Butiki Teas said 2012-07-04 02:11:49 -0400

Its worth keeping up on but it is also very addictive.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 01:02:31 -0400

Also could you please tell me more about these two tests you mention?

Small
Butiki Teas said 2012-07-04 02:17:19 -0400

There are a bunch of things I generally look for. I like to smell yixings to make sure they don’t smell like chemicals. If they smell like anything it should be clay. I like to see how heavy they are, yixing tends to be heavier with thick walls. Since they are porous, the water does not bead unless it has been waxed. I also like to test the lid and see how it fits. The lid should be a very good fit because it will retain the heat longer than a poor fitting lid. For pour, I like to see how it pours and make sure there is no dribble but an even flow. For the pour test, which is really a seal test, I fill a yixing with water and put my finger over the hole on the lid. Water should not come out. When you release your finger water should pour. There is another test you can do by filling up a good amount of water in your pot and putting your finger over the spout and turning it upside down. The lid should not fall off. Make sure you are ready to catch the lid though just in case.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 02:19:19 -0400

Thank you! A couple of those are new to me! I will use them! There is also a sound test but I am not good at it. And a lid spin test as well but those were the only two I knew of. Thank you for sharing! :)

Small
Butiki Teas said 2012-07-04 02:23:18 -0400

You’re welcome. I’m not so good with the sound test either. The newer pots tend to have higher pitched sounds and older ones have a deep sound but there are other things that can affect sound so I don’t even rely on that.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 02:54:18 -0400

Ok I couldn’t resist a couple things from Tealux too
10g Miyazaki Takachiho Japanese Oolong
30g Quangzhou Milk Oolong
50g Coconut Milky Oolong

I just noticed how nice it would be if Paypal explained how they figured their exchange rates BEFORE you order rather than in the email after. Jeez.I was like, Paypal you reversed this?

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 01:22:07 -0400

I almost ordered some wellness blends from them but started adding way too much to my cart so just cleared it all out and left the site lol the discount was not applying to some of the items I wanted anyway. BAH.

Small
momo said 2012-07-04 01:28:00 -0400

That is odd, I didn’t really want to order more but the Japanese oolong sounded so cool and I’d never seen that anywhere before so I found a couple other things to make it worthwhile.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 01:29:38 -0400

What I meant was I personally was getting carried away and kept adding things so in order to preserve my sanity and pocketbook I left the site LOL :)

Babble said 2012-07-04 14:05:47 -0400

Thanks. I knew the 4 oz of tea were good deals but I just couldn’t justify having all that tea I knew I’d never get through. So I just got a bunch of samples since some of the tea sounded interesting. At $1 for a sample it was hard to resist. Had to buy two brewing baskets, since I’ve heard good things about them.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 14:13:41 -0400

Yeah same here I have far too much tea already and honestly if I were to order more tea at this point should be things I have already tried and loved! However I had to at least give this company a shot with their teas since I totally wanted that yixing pot! :)
I SHOULD have got a brew basket at that price heck even if you don’t use them you can resell for a profit OR pass on in a trade as a gift! Its THAT good of a deal if you ask me! Now on the downside IF this tea is amazing I will wish i had grabbed even more at this price I mean you just can’t beat this deal!

Small
Babble said 2012-07-04 14:50:02 -0400

Yeah. I went back and forth on it. I just know I have so much tea. Now I’m wondering if I should have just ordered 4 oz and sent it away if I didn’t like it. But.. meh. This is what happens when you second guess orders. Lol.

Small
Azzrian said 2012-07-04 14:59:13 -0400

Yeah I thought the same thing and actually took out about three other teas from my cart but oh well we have to stop SOMEWHERE right? LOL

Small
Babble said 2012-07-04 15:11:51 -0400

You always have to stop somewhere, but the question is where is that line and when do you have a problem? Lol. I guess I can always order more tea if I really want to. I just know on other sales like this I order 4 oz. of tea and barely make a dent in it. If there were more reviews on the tea I ordered I might have done it. Or if they offered 2 oz samplers.
