Tea & Books - What are you reading?

I’m nearly done with Agatha Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles. It’s the first book I’ve read by her since high school. I’m liking it alright, but I’m anxious to get back into any of the Alexander McCall Smith series.

“Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party” is working its way to the top of my to-read stack! This makes me only, what, two behind?

I just finished “A History of the World in 6 glasses.” It is an interesting blend of history and beverages, starting with Beer, and ending with Coke (tea is # 5 of 6). There are a lot of quirky facts that are rather fun, as well as an interesting thesis that a great deal of history comes from what we drink (the author credits the industrial revolution at least in part to the fact that people started drinking coffee and tea at lunch rather than beer).

I’m reading this now. The writing style could be improved but it is interesting. I think each drink could have easily supported its own book, as I find myself having questions as I read. The antibacterial properties of tea were certainly something I’d never thought about.

I’m in the middle of American Gods by Neil Gaiman which I am loving but finding a really slow read nonetheless. I keep having to google the Gods I don’t know – and I thought I knew things about the gods! I really like the idea, I just find the execution a bit overwhelming.

I love this book and have reread it several times. It’s one of those novels where you notice new things every time you pick it up again.

I just finished the Dhammapada last week and I’ll probably finish up Cloud Atlas next. I’m struggling to choose my next book! I have such a huge list of things I want to read right now.

My “hold” list at the library has hovered at 63 for about 4 months now. In that time I have borrowed and read at least 20 books. How does this keep happening? Thank heavens I no longer work in a bookstore, that made for monumental ‘to-read’ piles.

“Cloud Atlas” is on my list for sure as I enjoyed “The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet”; really superb writing.

My job of finishing Cloud Atlas got more difficult over the past week as I picked up Dakini Power and have been focusing on that. I’m being such a sporadic reader!
I didn’t know libraries had hold lists. O.O I haven’t used one in such a long time! I wonder what book store discounts are like? I’d just spend my check there!
Cloud Atlas has been really interesting. His use of writing is commanding and I’m surprised that he pulled off what he’s trying to accomplish.

At my library I can order things online and put them on hold – I am still on a waiting list, but I can remain at the top of the list indefinitely as long as I have it suspended. That way other people can read it, and I can still be at the top of the list when I am ready. I LOVE it. At our bookstore, we had a 40% discount, which was at cost. We were an independent though, chains tend to have much better margins so the discount might be even better. We also got lots of advanced reader copies and would get free books from the reps. It was great to essentially be paid to read (so we could hand sell the books) but it could also be over-whelming. I focused mainly on YA and fiction at the time, and one of my co-workers was our non-fiction guru. It was lovely.

I finished Neil Gaiman’s “Stardust,” which started a little slow but turned out pretty good. More recently I’m a little embarrassed to admit, I read “Viking Captive” by Emma Merritt. It’s one of those Bodice busting romance novels. I get these once in a blue moon for yuks and grins. I see them as a woman’s answer to porn, the male characters being ridiculous constructs of female wishful thinking. This one was like a very bad train wreak…Unbelievably awful, but I just couldn’t look away…

Oh well, I’m donating it back to the secondhand store from which it came so I won’t have to endure that again and looking for my next read.

Reading ‘Pawn of Prophecy’ by David Eddings, and ‘Mostly Harmless’ by Douglas Adams. (And a science book.)

Loved Mostly Harmless!

Mostly harmless was definitely a good one!

Finished American Gods, which I did enjoy but found not very compelling. I will try more Gaiman another time. At the moment I am racing through Chasing The Moon by A. Lee Martinez, and I think I am about due for a non-fiction book but I don’t know what to pick yet.

I wish I could report I’m reading something cool, but I’m one of those “I read escapist, romancey stuff”. I’m working my way through the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. I’m on book 6.
I’ve read random books from the series, but I wanted to see the progression from crime solving to.. uhh, well, the series gets a little crazy.
