Common Ground: TEA and Board Games

No idea where to start with this one but this is one of my other obsessive hobbies :) Just don’t have enough people to play with here in Toronto to satisfy my board game cravings!

Some of the ones we play more often:
Puerto Rico, Dominion, race for the galaxy, cuba, agricola, citadels….

The fiancé and I like Settlers of Catan, Munchkin and Phase 10 (though the last two are card games). Citadels and Dominion are on my to-buy list, they look fun.

Yay!
haha I know the feeling – we just moved to Halifax and left our giant board game collection at home because we don’t have friends to play them with yet :(

Definitely miss Catan, Munchkin is SO fun (but not Munchkin Quest lol) – has anyone heard of Last Night on Earth? It’s a zombie board game that I’m VERY obsessed with! haha

Anyone here play go? It’s my favorite board game to play while drinking tea. Here’s a link if anyone is unfamiliar with it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)

I used to play but haven’t in YEARS. My dad taught me :)

I started a small club when I was in high school, but I can never find anyone who plays it anymore.

This is my husband’s favorite game. Unfortunately for him, I am the person he plays with the most. If he spots me 5 stones the game can be marginally interesting for him. ;)

Just in case there are folks out there who haven’t heard if it :)

Nice! Thanks for the link. We tend to play more party games than boardgames but I do love boardgames.

Do you ever watch Tabletop? They’re videos on youtube by Geek & Sundry – they feature different board games! They’re fun to watch if you want to learn a new one (it’s how I learned to play Munchkin) – and I’ve got my eyes on Fiasco now!

oh yes… watch it all the time. There are also a bunch of other reviewers who do a decent job of highlighting game mechanics, though not nearly as entertainingly as tabletop.

also… www.kickstarter.com was, at one point my weak point for new boardgames. Lots of games ordered through there haha

I love board games but (like many others) don’t have the people to play them with. I don’t have a terribly diverse selection but really enjoy some of the ‘active’ ones like Cranium and so on. I always think I like Monopoly but get very bitter if I lose. I wish my friends were board game people – and that they lived closer! : )

The beau and I play Scrabble and Magic on occasion, and play cards like old people.

Scrabble was a favorite in my house growing up (English teacher mother), along with Trivial Pursuit and Therapy (I was 8 years younger than my other siblings, they didn’t cater games towards me, but Therapy was surely my mom’s doings). Now it is hands down Apples to Apples!

I shall be looking into some of the ones mentioned above. I know the husband wishes we played more board games, but the toddler destroyed Candy Land. One of the things we are looking for in a new house is a Loft or Bonus Room upstairs that becomes our family game room. The husband also suggested awhile ago that whatever extra Living/Dining/Study at the front of the house should be my tea room. Good husband.

Autumn – if you’re looking to expand your board game horizons i have to say that there are a TON of games out there that are beyond the traditional “luck” games where you roll the dice and hope something happens with that roll. If your husband or you enjoy games that involve developing a strategy (even if it’s a light strategy) i’d suggest looking into euro games. A lot of people new to things really enjoying dominion which is a deck building game…buy cards, to add to your deck, which lets you buy more cards and points. Also Settlers of Catan is another really popular game that many enjoy as an entry level game into more complex games.

Then there are cooperative games like Pandemic/Forbidden Island etc which bring another dynamic to board games. Also, Tabletop, which DaisyChubb mentioned shows the games played out by celebrities AND they’re doing a promo with walmart where the games featured in Tabletop will be available to purchase there, rather than having to go to an actual board game store :)

Wow, you do have a good husband…..tea room….sweet!

Triples meaning 3 games at one time?? we so do that very same thing at home, its very much fun, we love it :)

Uniquity said 2012-08-24 16:46:38 -0400

I dunno if it’s a legitimate gameplay, but we use three columns at once so you have the chance to get three of each (although we don’t allow bonus yahtzees past the three)

oo love Farkle! The name is hilarious – but I love that all you need is dice. Perfect game!
