What sweeteners do you use to sweeten your tea?
I have noticed that some of you use sweeteners in your some of your teas. I was just wondering which kinds do you like and why? I do not use sweeteners in my teas unless it’s for iced tea or if my mom and grandmother or another guest is here and having tea with me so for that I just keep some german brown rock sugar that I got at Teavana on hand for guests. I noticed Tea Honey at Adagio and was wondering if there is a honey that you prefer?
Soccermom, the only tea I sweeten is my maple sugar black and I sweeten it with, of course, just a bit of maple sugar. That being said, Lupica and The Republic of Tea both sell honeys that contain tea and I really want to try them. I also want to hunt down some Indian sugar to sweeten my chai w/. I also have some stevia leaf coming so we’ll see how that goes.:)
When you say Indain Sugar, do you mean jaggery? (Palm Sugar) If so, you can fnd it in often find it in east asion-style groceries as it is also a major ingrediant in Thai Food. A block of it lasts along time and I often grate some into chai.
I use La Perruche brown sugar cubes, and they work well especially with strong tea with milk. I use just regular honey with my fruit flavored blacks (ex. Republic of Tea Ginger Peach), especially when iced.
Very, very rarely sweeten my tea, but if I do, I use either regular honey (I have some organic honey, as well, that’s great) or agave nectar. Agave nectar is great!
No sugar or honey or rock sugar ever in my teas. However, if one of my kids or hubby is sick with a cold or flu, I will add honey to their tea (do you think my kiddies will remember that as “comfort food” in their old age? My mother use to do that for me when I was younger.). However, I am thinking of ordering the amber sugar crystals from adagio or the rock sugar from teavana – just for my friends. Right now, I only have the white sugar cubes and the presentation may be prettier with the other sugars ….
I have a tub of creamed honey. I find I’m really not a fan of plain white sugar somehow. It’s weird. But brown sugar is nice in some teas as well. The other day, I saw a small jar of butterscotch and actually pondered picking one up to see how well it went in tea (I assume it would be too strong, but then I would just put it on my ice cream instead).
Every tea is different, I even find different steepings need different levels of sweetening.
I tend to slightly sweeten some teas.
As I have battled obesity all of my life, most of the time that means an artifical sweetener is used. And I hate myself every time I do that to good tea.
I usually use sugar (organic preferred) with my black teas, or honey with rooibos or chai, rarely but sometimes maple syrup. The last time I was at the market I searched all over for agave nectar but couldn’t find it! I will have to go to the health food store. I’d love to get some rock sugar too – and experiment with different kinds of honey. Right now I have some local honey – my husband brought it home from a coworker who knows someone with bees!! but it’s almost gone.
i try the tea without, then try adding german rock sugar or sugar in the raw or white sugar or honey depending on what i cna get my hands on.
my preference is german rock and honey though.
Some of my teas do regularly require a little sweetener touch up… Since otherwise I would be consuming tons of sugar per day, I have regretfully converted to Sweet Leaf stevia. It’s definitely not bad, but I would always prefer some real organic honey or white sugar if I can afford the calories. I can imagine maple syrup would be delicious, too!
I favor some of the more common herbal teas, namely chamomile or any of the mint family, with a little honey. For some black teas I may add honey if I am inclined to have something sweet, but usually I go without sweetening at all. I cannot imagine sweetening any of the greens, oolongs, or matés I have.
