What sweeteners do you use to sweeten your tea?
I don’t sweeten my tea. When I make chrysanthemum tea for a party, I sweeten it with brown sugar. I sweeten my coffee with maple syrup. Can coffee count as “herbal tea”? :P
Oooh! I’ve steeped my maple sugar black in coffee before, but I’ve always taken it clean- I’lll add maple syrup next time!
I’ve recently tried Purevia , one of those Stevia sweeteners . I tasted an aftertaste like from those fake sweeteners which really annoys me ! Its supposed to be an organic option like honey or cane sugar . I think I’ll just rely on honey and cane sugars unless someone has found a stevia sweetener that doesn’t have that friggen aftertaste .
When I drank Truvia, I got an aftertaste. So, it’s probably an individual thing.
As long as you don’t use more than about a tsp, I’ve found that Truvia doesn’t have an aftertaste. I generally use less than that so I love it! No calories, doesn’t harm your teeth, and it doesn’t ruin the flavor of my tea :)
I agree Ally928. Well kinda. I use Truvia for everything except tea (I don’t sweeten- except for possibly Maple Sugar Black and then I use maple sugar), but have yet to get an aftertaste- even when making lemonade.
I am the lone person here – I use Splenda when I sweeten. I never sweeten green, pu-erh, or oolong. I tend to sweeten my blacks and herbals. I’ve got a massive sweet tooth, and I need to watch the calories. I’ve tried a few stevia products, and they all taste nasty to me. So, Splenda it is.
I hardly ever use a sweetener, but when I do, it’s a locally produced honey. (Ideally, you should get honey that’s local to minimize the chance for allergy related issues.) I’ve tried organic blue agave sweetener, but it has a molasses note that ruins a lot of teas.
I get a chemical aftertaste from all artificial sweeteners, so I stick to small quantities of raw sugar, or locally-produced honey. I especially like orange blossom honey for fruity or citrusy teas.
IF you are using artificial sweeteners to cut down on calories, there is a new study that just came out showing that they may be actually making you fatter.
So this just reinforces my personal beliefs that natural foods are better than artificial ones, regardless of what the nutrition labels tells you.
I’ve known that for a while- it was also featured on the Martha Stewart show today. It can also make depression worse. Anything with “artificial” in the name should be a HUGE red flag. That’s why I go w/ stevia. Natural and calorie free:)
I will use honey, or simple syrup (for iced tea)!
My mom also got some weird blueberry sweetener (supposed to be better for you than honey…)

I think it has a lower glycemic index so it’s better for diabetics, but it lacks the crap load of antioxidents honey has. And both are heavy on the calories.
i must agree with most of you when talking about not really needed to sweeten any of my teas i have looked at different sweeteners but never picked out any.
German rock sugar is great to sweeten… you can start with that and then little by little decrease the sugar to taste the tea itself more and more. I think sugar sometimes is a good way to get into Tea if you are not an avid tea drinker to start :)
For Rooibos I have been known to use honey or Stevia. I have used store bought processed Stevia, and I have used my homemade processed Stevie. I like them.
Homemade processed stevia?
I grow it, I dry it, I pulverize it. So in the end, it not just the original leaf…it is powder.
