Good teas for cold brewing?
So, I’ve been tossing tea in my Camelback waterbottle and drink it throughout the day. Although I steep it in hot water, I drink most of it room temperature or cooler. This… works better with some flavors than others. Any thoughts on what teas will be tasty even once cooled?
In my experience, fruity teas are best when cold. In recent memory, I’ve had a cherry-flavoured tea, a citrusy tea, and a “tropical”-type tea, and they all had this juicy, Jolly Rancher-like feel to them that made me think they’d taste better cold than they do hot.
Fruit teas are definitely great cold brewed, but you should experiment and see what you love! I particularly like cold brewed Earl Greys (esp EGS) and Chais, which definitely aren’t the typical teas to cold brew. Florals are also nice, and a good cold brewed sencha is divine.
Agreed on the cold chais, as long as its one that actually has a good spice taste to it, sometimes I actually like ’em better cold.
A strong EG would taste great cold I think. I did Bigelow EG a few years ago and it was….ok I guess. Cold brewed Chai……well not a fan of traditional Chai so that doesn’t really appeal me.
I’m actually LOVING the 52Teas Southern Boy Collection as cold brewed teas. Also really good are the cold-brewed teas from Den’s Tea. One of my favorite caffeine free choices is the Pink Rose Lemonade from The Tea Spot – it’s incredible, as is their Boulder Blues.
Huh. It hadn’t occurred to me that some vendors (52Teas, Den’s Tea, The Tea Table, etc) recommend some of their their tea for cold-brewing or enjoying iced. That Pink Rose Lemonade tea sounds AMAZING!! Looks beautiful, too. Thanks, LiberTEAS!
Della Terra has some good teas as well that I actually prefer cold brewed. Usually the fruity type as Nik said above :)
Has anyone ever tried cold brewing pu-erh?? like a mini brick?
hmmm that might be interesting. I might have some kicking around that i can try that with on the weekend heh
I have some I can try too. I have not found a straight pu-erh that I like so I have been avoiding what I have. It just feels like a waste to try it cold brewed if its going to be gross. But then again it is just a waste if I leave it sitting there. Hmmm…
haha now you’re thinking. I have a straight puerh that i love, so I’ll see if there’s some to spare for a cold brew heh
I will cold brew almost anything. I love oolongs and earl greys cold brewed, but also regularly any flavored tea, straight greens, herbals/fruit teas. But I find I do not like hibiscus cold brewed. So if the herbal blend is heavy on the hibiscus, I stay away.
I’ve been cold brewing Della Terra’s Mellow Mango Peach, it’s probably my new favorite for something cold.
