Steep n' go

Does anyone know where to get these or something similar? Such a brilliant idea, but the Tea Spot is out of stock and has been so for a while…

The Tea Spot replied today to an email I sent asking about these. They said they’d have more in about a month.

Very neat! So you basically just sip out of the spout and none of the tea comes out? Has anyone had any issues with the fannings and small particles of tea coming through?

Nope. You put them right in the bottle and the filter stops anything. I’ve not tried any rooibos teas though, but no small bits of black tea have come through. And to answer your second question below, I tried to put it on a Whole Foods 365 brand water bottle and it didn’t work. Well it kind of fit on the Dasani side but it leaked a lot, and when I use a Dasani bottle I don’t have that problem. I never realized the way the bottle is shaped for the cap was that different!

Thanks for taking one for the team. =P In addition to the question teawade asked about bottle compatibility, I’m really interested in the drinking experience. Specifically, I’m wondering about leaves getting stuck to the contraption as I sip the tea from the spout. I can imagine it might get kind of frustrating, once the bottle is less than half full, to constantly have to shake it to try and get the leaves off the filter.

My hope is that I’m not properly understanding how it works and that what I’m imagining isn’t a problem, after all. I look forward to your review!

Also, does it work with only the bottles listed? Dasani, etc. Or is it compatible with almost all bottled water like Poland Spring, etc.

Partial review on the Steep-N-Go. 1st off,iHeartTeas was great and shipped the product quicky, thanks RachanaC.

Now for the device: it most certainly will NOT work with all bottles. I tried it with a Fuji water, Smartwater, and generic store brand water bottles – and they all leaked. I bought a Dasani bottle, and after really cranking on the lid, I’m happy to report it doesn’t leak.

Each unit is made of 3 plastic parts. The most important part (as far as leaking) is a wide collar that screws onto your water bottle. This collar has 2 thread sizes and can be inverted to use the optional threading. The actual filter tube then fits into this collar. The collar is about 2.5 inches long and about 1/2 – 5/8 inches wide (estimating for both these). The filter tube fits snugly into the collar and extends down into the water bottle. The nipple cap then screws onto the outside of the collar. This makes the outside diameter of the cap much wider than the neck of the water bottle, making it look a little weird to me, but not a deal breaker. This separation also makes cleaning easier.

I haven’t tried cold steeping before and was delighted by the flavors I found in a tea my wife enjoys but that I typically don’t. (she was home when the package arrived and wasted no time in making some of her favorites)

The long filter tube has a lot of tiny holes. While I haven’t tried a rooibos in it yet, I don’t imagine there will be much that gets through those tiny holes. In addition, there are enough holes so that a good amount of tea can get through easily and rapidly.

@Nik, there is no way the leaves will be an issue sticking to the filter. When the bottle is around 1/2 full and inverted for drinking, the tea and leaves and filter are at the bottom. Since there’s still a lot of water, the leaves just swirl around without clogging anything. The actual act of inverting the bottle to drink shakes things up. Conversely, putting it back down causes most leaves to fall off the now suspended filter and back into the tea water.

This isn’t perfect by any means, for instance I can understand the 2 threaded collar for more bottles to fit – but why pick Dasani? It seems like they are the odd man out with ALL the other water bottles I tried having interchangeable caps and threads. But for $7, its a pretty good buy.

Update: The Steep N Go worked nicely all day with some flavored loose leaf tea. After I got home I tried a little honeybush from Adagio(don’t have any rooibos at the moment) and unfortunately, some of it came through the filter. Loose leaf teas or tisanes are going to work great, but unless you like tiny bark chips in your tea, I’d avoid these using these with rooibos or honeybush.

Thanks for the great review. I would definitely be interested in purchasing this but most of the bottled water I have at home is poland spring and I rarely ever get dasani. Hopefully one that is universal to almost all water bottles will come out soon. Then I’m definitely in for one.

Thank you for the review and for addressing my concern! I really love the idea of this accessory, but will also wait for one to come along that does a better job of fitting a wider variety of water bottles.

My $.02 – I can either bring my tea with me, in which case I want a permanent and sturdy bottle that doesn’t leak, OR I can bring some tea leaves and a gizmo to cold brew on the go. If that’s the case, having something that will fit more bottles would be much better since I have no idea what bottles will be available. I think that whoever made this had a great idea, but kind of missed the mark and got halfway between those two ideals. I am glad I bought them, just for the fact that I’m doing more cold brewing now.

I agree that not having a universal size to fit all or almost all water bottles may be the only thing that hurts this product.
