Not sure when this started, or when it will end, but Tea Masters has some nice “price drops” on some of their offerings:

US only! I confirmed it doesn’t apply to Canada, even though their fine print does not say this.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Harney do free shipping to Canada. They often do “free shipping” and rarely include include that it only goes to US. Obviously, Harney really annoys me.

Yes, they are like some others in the U.S.: not at all “friendly” to non-U.S. customers. Teasource is another retailer that (in my experience) lacks any real interest in us Canadians. Teatrekker also fits into that category, from my experience.

Shipping to Canada is quite expensive. Just because companies can’t loose that much money on shipping doesn’t mean they aren’t friendly or interested in your business. We often don’t qualify for shipping offers from Canadian companies. Sales are nice bonuses. Not something we’re all inherently entitled to.

OMGsrsly said

What Canadian companies? All the ones I’ve ordered from also have a free shipping threshold to the States. In my experience, it’s cheaper to ship to Canada than it is to ship within Canada or to a US address. Canada Post is very expensive.

cookies: I wasn’t referring to shipping in my comments, but rather to the e-mail exchanges I have had with people from the companies involved.

I know shipping from Canada is expensive as well, but that wasn’t exactly my point. What I’m trying to say is that companies not being able to eat shipping costs for everyone doesn’t mean they aren’t friendly or interested in your business. They may just not be able to afford it. A small flat rate box (least expensive option) from USPS is $20. For a great deal of companies this just isn’t feasible.
There are a couple threads on here where company owners have spoken about how expensive it is for them, and what their strategies are, if anyone is interested.

Sherubtse – I see, I assumed you were speaking in reference to the shipping comments.

At one point Harney’s used to offer a discount on International Shipping when they had free domestic. They haven’t done this for a while though. It was nice to get at least a break in the shipping costs.

@Cookies – I actually dislike Harneys for a number of reasons, mostly stemming from bad experiences with them. Being disingenuous with their “free shipping” statement even though people have pointed it out to them for years is just one of the things I don’t like. Can’t speak for anyone else though.

@Uniquity, im H&S customer since 2002 (i think). All these years i had only positive experiences. Would you please share with us yours?

I understand international shipping costs are a deterrent, but I really like it when customers offer shipping breaks if they can’t do free shipping. Just recently A&D offered a discount on shipping for Canadians, and I’m hopeful that it was worth it for them with the sales they had that day. I personally know a few people (including myself) who stocked up because of the deal who otherwise wouldn’t have bothered.

It doesn’t have to be free. But if Harney’s gave us $5 off, that might be enough to get us to bite. It’s not THAT much more to ship to Canada, especially if you send it the slowest speed, and don’t offer tracking. If someone wants to pay for tracking/faster shipping, let them. Otherwise why not offer discount shipping rates so other customers will buy?

I don’t think we’re asking for that much.

I just wanted to add that there’s cheaper options than the $20 flat rate.

First-Class Package International Service™**More info about First-Class Package International Service™
Value of contents can not exceed $400.00
Other than rolls: Max. length 24", max length, height and depth (thickness) combined 36"
Rolls: Max. length 36". Max length and twice the diameter combined 42"

(I know this because I campaigned Adagio for a while to ship to a cheaper method, and now it’s more like $9-15 an order instead of the $30 they originally calculated)

@Boychik – It’s been a few years now but at the time, they had very poor customer service to Canada. I and several other Steepsterites had similar experiences with information all geared toward Americans. For example, my e-mail confirmation said my order would be processed within 2 business days. After a week I contacted customer service and several days after that they finally responded and said it is a week to process international orders – even though their previous communication didn’t mention that at all.

There were other similar issues – a lack of response to concerns, very slow processing and shipping times. The tea was fine but it was abundantly clear that they didn’t value me as a customer and I still believe they treat their Canadian customers as second class citizens. I don’t mind paying more for shipping – I expect it – but I don’t see why it should take extra days to prepare a Canadian order or why they still aren’t up front about time/expense/etc for Canadian orders. Especially since I know a number of people have complained.

I feel that if companies can’t provide a reasonable service to Canadian/international orders they shouldn’t bother offering them. Sorry. I know people love Harneys, but they bug me. Especially since they’re a big enough company to put a little more care into things. And they do seem to treat American customers very well.

@Uniquity, im sorry to hear that. most of the time if i place an order in the morning it gets to me the next day. I know, im in NY. i remember when i had some questions regarding the products and customer service wouldnt be able to answer, Mike Harney personally called me back and sent pics of the pot, all sides. took the time asking me what flavors im into when i wasnt sure about some tea. gave me excellent suggestions. overall i would order from them more but my strong interest in puerh lol prevents me (its addiction i know).
Again Im sorry you had a bad experience. im sure if you would address it they would make it right
