Where in town (or out) is everyone? I’m in James Bay.

I work at Mayfair. I know Road has a tea bar, but I don’t know if they have a sitting area like David’s or Teavana. Jaga Silk has a room upstairs thought for tea, they are mainly matcha so it depends on what everyone likes. They do tastings too, iirc.

Ha, and here I have class until 4:30 on Wednesday, so it wouldn’t work for me, but that is ok with me. We could always alternate days of the week to meet up?

I live not too far from UVic.

I like this idea! we could do Saturday this month, Wednesday next month, Saturday the next one, etc. Heck, if people hit it off and want to hang out more often we could always do more than one per month :)

I’d appreciate that, because with the travel there’s no way I’d be able to make a weekday! :)

Excellent then! Also, I’d be totally up for going to Vancouver sometime, like maybe in the summer, so if any Van dwellers would like to meet up, we could meet up on your turf sometime too. I still need to visit Granville Island anyway, so a trip needs to be made regardless. :)

So would it be ok with everyone if the 23rd would be the first meetup? It sucks that that date would leave you out, Heather, but by the looks of it, it seems like the best option right now?

But if you guys figure out a Wednesday that works, definitely go for that!

I replied below, but like I said, I might be able to get the day off or do a partial day given the advance notice.

Does a 1pm-ish meet sound good for everyone on the 23rd? I’d be happy to walk around and check out all the tea shops Downtown, or sit and have tea. My only “must-see” is Silk Road, and hopefully they have Golden Phoenix in stock this time! I’ll grab some food before we meet, because I’m gluten intolerant and in my experience tea shops and cafes don’t have many options.

My plan is to take the 9am ferry over, then meet a friend for dinner before they drop me off at the ferry. So far it looks like I’m taking the bus.

Sounds good! I’ve been meaning to pick up some things from Silk Road too.

Fjellrev said

Yeah me too. As a matter of fact, I still haven’t bought anything from there. Blasphemy. I keep waffling on stuff and using my tea budget towards online stuff.

I’m overdue for a Silk Road trip too. Wouldn’t mind wandering up the road to Murchie’s, actually. I’m in desperate need of a Russian Caravan type, and Murchie’s is the only place in town that has any it seems. I predict a tea-tour if the weather’s nice! haha

Golden Phoenix is a standard. I think they pretty much always have it. It’s an oolong, right?

OMGsrsly said

It is standard, but I was there over the summer and they happened to be out that weekend. Boo. I think it’s a Puerh, but I don’t remember. I have one cup left I’ve been hoarding for a couple years. I should probably drink it.

Crowkettle said

Golden Phoenix is listed as a “semi-green” in store and they have it under puerh on their website. I initially thought it was an oolong a year ago.

yep, Golden Phoenix is a pu’erh, it’s just a little lighter than their straight pu’erh. It does look a lot like their Black Dragon oolong though. I’m addicted to it, bought a “300 cup” size tin last time I was in, and it’s already half gone!

Well if that works for you, then I’m totally up for it!

Sounds good to me! Are you driving on, or walking on the ferry? I will be out at the barn that morning, not even 5 minutes’ drive from the ferry terminal, if you’re in need of a ride.

With this much notice, I might be able to work a partial day or get the day off. Should we consider doing a swap as well?

Do it! It would be awesome to have you come to our inaugural meet!
A swap is a neat idea, actually. What are everyone else’s thoughts?

OMGsrsly said

I can bring little baggies of different teas. That won’t look suspicious at all, will it? :D And if anyone is interested in teas from Steam Teahouse (on Facebook) or somewhere else in Vancouver, I could do a bit of sample shopping. How are samples usually done?

I’d be up for swapping too. I just need to get supplies, like baggies (would Michael’s carry tiny baggies?) since I never swap via snail mail due to lack of time and can’t justify shipping costs.

Dollar stores in the craft aisle have tiny bags for cheaper than michaels

Fjellrev said

Ah, makes sense. I’ll have to make a trip then. :)

Crowkettle said

I need to pick up some bags too. Thanks for the tip :)
