Pregnancy and anxiety What tea is good?
My best friend is 5 month pregnant with her 4th child and sadly she has horrible anxiety as well and can be thrown into a full blown anxiety attack juat by somone leaving her, Someone told her that there are specific teas that help to reduce the anxiety but im not sure what ones they are and if there ok for being Pregnant as well, For christmas i got her Davids pumpkin tea which is caffein free and also i got her Tension Tamer, But are these teas ok and what other kinds are ok ?

Hi Sare, oh your poor friend, I feel so badly for her. You are being such a good friend to her. Something that may be helpful: those babies use up all the glucose in their mom’s brains, which can leave the mom experiencing reactive low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can equal major anxiety and panic. Eating protein rich meals and snacks, along with complex carbohydrates and healthy fats, can make a big difference. Moms on the go often don’t feel well while pregnant and have simple carbs to settle their stomachs, which just perpetuates the blood sugar spike and crash cycle. Is this mama eating a breakfast right away when she wakes up with plenty of protein? Note: I am not a doctor nor do I play one on tv! She should definitely check in with her doctor and get increased support. Ok, on to tea! Of course, common sense safety applies and she should check with her doctor before using any new herbal supplements but rooibos is lovely during pregnancy. Rooibos chai is very soothing and nourishing. Best wishes!
According to this website and some doctors, Chamomile during pregnancy is NOT advised. Apparently some medical professionals feel it is ok, so your friend should really talk with her doctor first.
From everything I have read and experienced, your friend should be fine with rooibos. My wife drank rooibos consistently during her pregnancy, and she was carrying twins. She even drank black tea every day. I think we’re too paranoid in this country but I can completely understand if someone doesn’t want to take any risks, no matter how small.
I have a number of pregnant co-workers at the moment and I am starting to agree about pregnancy paranoia. They are constantly being told by their doctors, mothers, in-laws, sisters, friends and strangers on the street what they should or should not do while pregnant. It would drive me a little bonkers, I think.
Part of it is due to fear of litigation and the other is so they can push products from their drug reps. Perfect example, people all over the world give their kids whole milk as infants, yet in the U.S. it is frowned upon, and doctors will tell you not to do it until they turn 1. It makes you wonder who’s side they are on when they push formula so much.
If the Davids Pumpkin tea you’re referring to is their Pumpkin Chai I just wanted to let you know that it is a black tea so not caffeine free (assuming she is trying to avoid caffeine as that can exacerbate anxiety). I find that most tisanes for pregnant women have their proponents and their detractors, so she is better off communicating with her doctor or midwife about what is appropriate for her. St. John’s Wort and Valerian Root are two herbs which can be used to induce calm, but apparently neither is recommended for pregnant women in case of problems. I think that is what you will see for pretty much everything, unfortunately. I’ve yet to hear of something being whole-heartedly endorsed as ok for pregnant women. Or people in general. : )
