Searching for Good Online Loose Tea Shop

My future son-in-law enjoys drinking tea. I want to make an impression as a good mother-in-law so I’d like advice on where to get some good quality loose leaf tea. Since I don’t know his favorite type of tea, I’d like to find a source where I could get a number of smaller size packages, say around one ounce each. Thank you for your suggestions.

Oh man….the choices you have in front of you! You may want to see what the retailers are doing for Black Friday but to start you off….

Butiki teas
Della terra teas
HArney and sons
Verdant teas
Teavivre

There are a ton…but I don’t want to overwhelm you :) some of those above will allow you to get sample sizes as well which are smaller than 1oz and would let him try a bunch. It also depends on whether he prefers straight or flavoured teas more than others.

Yes, I’d highly recommend waiting a few more days for Black Friday.

I second Sil’s rec for “Della Terra” – they have try me packs and all sorts of different size options. They make their teas very easy to buy in small amounts and their customer service is superb!!

David’s Tea is also great, as is Adagio. Adagio in particular has low prices and large sample sizes.

What a nice MIL! My super sneaky suggestion is to ask your daughter or son, the kid of yours who will marry this lucky fellow, exactly what his favorite teas are. That way, you can have some of his favorites waiting for him. There are so many teas and tea blends and some people have specific likes and dislikes. If your kid gives you some direction, such as, “oh, I dunno…he likes some kind of black tea in the morning and then green teas in the afternoon” even that will give you some direction. Ask, too, if there are any he absolutely hates. Some people, for example, hate earl grey so much! Others want it ALL the time! : )
I enjoy Upton’s, which can be found at uptontea.com They have nicely priced sample sizes.
Hope this rambling helps…!

Yes, Upton is good, and their larger samples come in nice tins — very classy!

Wow what a lucky boy, to have an amazing MIL like you!!
Dens Tea has a great sampler pack for $3, which is super cheap if you aren’t sure about his preferences.
The Kiosque will make up samples of whichever tea you request, I’ve done it twice now and their straight teas are amazing.

Otherwise, whereabouts do you live? there might be a shop in town that can help out. If you drop the name of your city, somebody here might know of a place nearby that can show you the options in person.

Do you know what kind of tea he is drinking now? Any idea if he is drinking loose leaf or bagged? Black, green, etc? I know you may not be sure of any of this but even a small tip as to what he likes now could really help us narrow down where you could get him the most impressive teas FOR HIM. :)

Aloha, I have a direct from grower online tea company called Tealet (http://www.tealet.com/). We focus on curating a variety of teas so people can take a tea discovery journey around the world. We specialize in Hawaii Grown Tea (we are based in Hawaii), but promote teas for farmers in China, Japan, Korea, India, Nepal, Taiwan, and Sri Lanka. I highly recommend gifting a Global Tea Taster subscription for him. He will be shipped 60 grams of tea (usually 4 15gram samples of each tea). The longer period of time you subscribe the better price you receive. We then tell the story of the tea and grower on our website. We’ll have some exciting promotions for Black Friday weekend!

This is such an awesome gesture! I’m sure even if you get a tea that makes him go “bleh” he will appreciate the gesture. You could play it safer and just get a nice tea set; you can find them all over the internet from the simple to the elegant to the avant garde. :)
