I’d say if you plan on storing your tea for awhile before drinking you should store it in tins.

I bought a bunch of tins from Michael’s to store my teas. They were in the dollar bin and are the perfect size to store 2 oz. of tea. When I got to the register, they rang up for a penny each! I went back and bought the whole bunch!

Black bags sound good. A tin is not always better. I have some tins that I have to use the leverage of a spoon handle to open them. Those I know are very safe for tea, but not convenient to use. Not all teas are as well sealed. For bags, you can try to hold the single layer against the light, if you don’t see through, that’s good. If you can somewhat see through, the less transparent the better. Even if you can somewhat see through, you can always store the bags in a dark cupboard. Ziploc is good enough for short term and most household storage (if you don’t store it for more than a few months). But if you plan to store it for long or put it in fridge, then you had better heat seal it with food saver or other hot pad sealer. The bag material is also important. Most bags I’ve seen sold by tea shops and coffee shops are pretty good. Generally, you should not smell much aroma of your tea from your cupboard (unless it’s lingering aroma from the last time you open a tin or bag). The more you smell the aroma, the more the tea is losing it.

The best tins are those double-lidded ones that I usual only see with those cute washi paper Japanese tins. Some of them are truely beautiful works of art as well. :)
