I really liked the Pino and was disappointed that it broke so soon (but I did purchase the now discontinued model) … Anyway, as a “quick purchase”, I went to my local Sur La Table and bought the Capresso glass kettle. Anyway, I hate that it doesn’t beep when it is ready…

So, I can return the Capresso to the store and then try a Breville OR wait for Pino to come in via shipping…Last time I ordered the Pino, it took almost 2 weeks!! Let me look into shipping times for the Chef’s Choice…

Cofftea said

I have the discounted PINO as well that I’m trying to sell… Again, the ratings were so good on that!

SoccerMom said

LOL

Cofftea said

Not so funny when you pay that much for a non returnable product!

SoccerMom said

It’s funny because it sounds like you are now TRYING to sell yours to Lori :)

Cofftea said

Unless she wants it (it does actually work great), no. I was just saying that I also have it, but the rating obviously didn’t hold up for Lori. My only beef is that it reads in C instead of F… I’m way too type A w/ my steeping parameters for my own good. Hello, my name is Sara and I’m addicted to steeping parameter perfection. LOL

Lori said

Well I got the Breville tonite as I needed a kettle right away. Really I liked the Pino and if I were not so impatient I would have ordered the newer model or even possibly bought yours Cofftea. My broken Pino was in F and not in Celsius though….

They must have discontinued more than one model then.

This is pretty cool but I don’t think it would work at high altitude. Seems like it’s little computer head would explode when the boiling temp wouldn’t go over 198F.

Kristin, which product are you talking about?

Kristin said

The One-Touch Tea Maker. Seems like it wouldn’t work since it would be trying to get up to a boiling temp that it cannot reach.

Cofftea said

Kristin, sorry- just saw this. You could use the “custom” feature to plug in your boiling temp. Then you’d get boiling water:) Just going about it differently.

Kristin said

Cool. Thanks. I wound up ordering a Le Crueset kettle and that seems to be working out for me. I’d be interested to know if anyone has trouble with rust with the Breville. Tea Kettles always tell you to not leave water in them, but I always forget to pour out the water until I go to brew the next cup. That is why I went with the Le Crueset kettle; because it has a painted enamel interior so it is more rust resistant. My last kettle, (a cheapo) rusted in under 2 weeks.

i try to empty my breville metal electric kettle all the time, but frequently the other people in the place forget – hasn’t rusted

We are SO glad to hear how excited everyone is about the One Touch Tea Maker! Just wanted to let you know that it will be on store shelves May 1.

But if you can’t wait, the Breville Variable Temperature Kettle is available now. I have one at home and I love it. I brought a serious sencha addiction back to the States after living in Japan for a year. Getting the temperature right every time makes a world of difference, no? I didn’t even know I was burning my tea here. I thought that it was just bad tea.

Anyway, let me know if I can answer any questions you have about the Breville kettles.

Please explain the “custom” settings feature. Once this is explained (more specifically how sensitive it can be set), I can make my decision about whether this is for me or not. I like to be able to set my kettle in one degree temperature increments.

SoccerMom said

Brad, Thanks for the update! I can’t wait I am marking my calendar for May 1st.

SoccerMom,

That’s great! What tea will you brew first?

SoccerMom said

Formosa Silk Oolong! My all time favorite.

Yum. Just read the reviews. Sounds good. Need to try.

Sure thing Cofftea. So, the One Touch has pre-programmed settings for various types of teas.

But, you can make custom settings for temperatures between 160 to 205F, in 5 degree increments. You can, of course, also boil at 212F.

You can also set brew times from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, in 30-second increments.

There are 5 preprogrammed settings for green tea (175, 3 minutes), white tea (185, 3 minutes), oolong (195 3 minutes), herbal (212, 4 minutes), and black tea (2 minutes), but, everyone likes their tea a little different, right?

I tend to steep mine a bit longer.

Cofftea said

5 degree increments… poop. And I wanted so much to adore this. That’d be pretty close though. Oh heck, I have a feeling my funds will dictate if I get this or not. If I’m blessed w/ the funds, I probably will. This is only one of 2 products I know of that lets you set the timer to have the ready for a specific time in the future- and the other product isn’t nearly as tempurature or time sensitive!

Hmm. Are you looking for 1 degree increments? I’d love to hear more of what you’re looking for in a tea maker.

Sorry, just thought of something. If you have some feedback for our designers, you should leave a note at our channel at Get Satisfaction: www.getsatisfaction.com/breville
They love to get user insight.

Cofftea said

Ah shoot. I’ve gotten past the 5 degrees thing (I’m such type A perfect parameters addict it even annoys myself LOL), buuuttt one thing I did notice is that I wouldn’t be able to steep Premium Gyokuro… and I just love my Japanese greens… sad day. I’f I’m gonna pay this kinda money for such an AWESOME product, I want to be able to use it no matter what tea I wish to make. My wallet feels better, but my heart is in my shoes… :,-<

Ohh, are you brewing it below 160? It’s definitely worth mentioning to the designers.
I love my Japanese greens too, usually at 175 though. Do you think that’s too much?

Cofftea said

It depends on what type of Japanese green you’re making. All greens (specifically Japanese) are not created equal. Each type requires different steeping parameters. And not just temperature, water volume and leaf amount as well. Here’s some awesome info: http://www.denstea.com/index.php?main_page=perfect_brewing
The current temperature limitations of the Breville One-Touch Tea Maker BTM800XL prevents the ability to make Premium Gyokuro at the suggested temperature and the time setting limitations prevent the ability to reach the proper steeping time (45 sec.) some senchas. I would suggest lowering the min temp to 140 and making the time increments 15 sec instead of 30. If these changes are going to be made, the 1 degree increment change would also be nice. Make these changes, and I’ll be all over this like white on rice- or matcha on my tongue:) Oh, it’d be sooo nice to have my water for my matcha preheated for me when I wake up!

Garrett said

I definitely think 15 second increments would be nicer than 30 seconds on this. The minimum temp going to 140 would be cool too, but I’m not too worried about that part. If there is ever a tea that I want to brew to a more precise time and temperature it would probably be a very high quality tea that I would want to take the time to make sure it is perfect. I’ll definitely look into posting feedback though, thanks!

Cofftea said

Brad, I tried to leave feedback on the website you listed, but we have to click on a product that it applies to, but the Breville One-Touch Tea Maker BTM800XL is not one of the ones listed.

Cofftea, I just checked that out. Did you try submitting without selecting one? I know it says to, but I think it lets you do it without selecting it.

Cofftea said

It works, thanks!

If anyone likes/agrees w/ my suggestions to make this tea maker even better, I posted my ideas here:

Hey Breville guys (Andrew Davis and Food Thinkers) what’s the update on the time/temp improvement suggestions? I normally get annoyed when the introduction of a product gets pushed back, but as I believe these changes will greatly improve this product I wouldn’t mind waiting a little longer for it to come out if need be.

Hey Cofftea – is this your question on GetSatisfaction?

We’re working on getting some more insight from the design team in Sydney.

@Andrew Davis- yep that’s it!

I just recieved an email notifying me of a new reply to my question, but when I signed in, it said my email (the same one the reply was sent to) wasn’t registered… hmmm… anyway so I’ll post my comment here. I’m so glad the temperature issue is being looked at! But what about the time increments?

There seems to be a lot of interest in the functionality of this tea maker. So, here’s a link to the product manual (as a PDF): http://www.brevilleusa.com/manuals/BTM800XL.pdf

thank you, you may have just done my poor wallet some damage though :)

Garrett said

Awesome, thanks a lot! I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE to try and find more info on this product, so this manual really helps out a lot. And it’s really cool that you can answer our questions for us!

Also, hope you didn’t mind that I linked the photos from your flickr in the first post, they were the only decent images of the product that I could find for references.

No problem. Happy to be here and just really glad that there’s some excitement about the product.

And that’s what the flickr imagery is there for. We appreciate the links. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks so much for answering our questions and posting the manual!

Sure thing denisend. The Steepster community rocks. I’m just bummed that I’ve missed out on so much discussion already.

Cofftea said

Don’t think of how much you missed, what you’ll be here for is a lot greater!:)

Haha. Thanks Cofftea! Bright side… nice!

Kristin said

Thanks for the link to the manual. I don’t see the answer to my question though. Can you tell me if this works at high altitude? It seems like it would have trouble with the boiling temperature (since water boils where I live at around 198 F). What happens when it cannot reach 212F?

Kristin,
I don’t know off the top of my head. Your best bet is to drop our support team a line at our Get Satisfaction channel: getsatisfaction.com/breville

I think Kristin did actually see this question on GetSatisfaction… http://getsatisfaction.com/breville/topics/breville_one_touch_tea_maker_btm800xl

We’re working on getting some answers from the design team in Sydney. We’ll let you know as soon as we have an update!
