Teas in pregnancy

My daughter’s teacher is pregnant & this is her last week before leaving for maternity leave. She is a tea lover. I want to get her a going away gift. I want to do pregnancy friendly teas & or teas that can help with pregnancy, delivery & post pregnancy. Or joys of being a mom.

So I’m thinking;
Raspberry Leaf
A strong black for those rough nights once baby is born
A sleepy time one
Headache remedy

What would be good to include in this basket?

How about a rooibos?

If there is a chance she’ll breastfeed then you have to be careful with herbs and caffiene.

I’d do an English Breakfast or Eary Grey. Then a nice green or white. I’d stay away from herbals.

Teas are very touchy during pregnancy. You mostly have to stick with straight black and then be careful how much because of the caffiene.

If I was getting a gift – I’d go for something useful for making tea but not necessarily tea…or a gift card to Davids or something where she could make her own decisions.

I’m pregnant now (first pregnancy!!), and I’m a doctor, but I also did a lot of research on this. Raspberry leaf is a good one. Pure ginger (or ginger + black/green/white blend) is also good especially for nausea and any stomach upset. Rooibos is safe also. I would caution on the other herbal drinks like chamomile, ginseng, and others. The occasional black tea is okay as well as green and white teas. :) That’s sweet of you to put together a gift! Overall I think your list is good! For the sleepy one maybe a rooibos vanilla blend. I don’t really have a good recommendation for the headache relief… just drinking a lot of water is good for that :/

Just a reminder that raspberry leaf is out during first trimester, though that clearly doesn’t apply in this case I like to mention it.

Also, especially during the first trimester green tea is bad as it can prevent the absorption of folic acid.

I’ve heard that chamomile also has that issue the whole way through. Of course, one can hear pretty much anything.

Yep, I have a HUGE list of herbs that aren’t FDA approved. That’s the problem – they can’t test on pregnant people.

I’’ve heard that chamomile in large quantities is an abortifacient. . . Not sure how solid that is though.

I gave my pregnant friend a peppermint leaf one and she said it’s great with head aches!
