Saturday USPS mail to stop Aug 5 (NOT packages)

FYI Steepsters – USPS Mail will stop on Saturdays beginning Aug 5. This does NOT apply to packages (phew) but still may affect some of you.

Here’s a link to the article: http://www.politico.com/story/2013/02/postal-service-to-cut-saturday-mail-to-trim-costs-87246.html

I saw that on facebook today… the USPS has gone downhill the past couple of years. I have friends that work in the postal service and are not happy about cut hours and jobs.

It’s a relief to see packages will still be sent through but I can’t help but think about checks and such being in the mail over the weekend… sigh

I can imagine. Yeah, it’ll be a bummer for no more Saturday mail. I imagine it will also be confusing for people understanding that SOME stuff goes out on Saturday, but some does not.

Things still move over the weekend, USPS is at least good about that unlike UPS.

It’s kind of weird that there are packages but no mail… like, if they’re gonna stop anyway, why not drop off the letters as well?

I was thinking that too!

I thought that was weird too, Alphakitty but I assume they don’t have to stop at every house this way. I know they spend a LOT of time in my apartment complex putting everything in the boxes so their time would be cut by at least 80% on Saturday to only be bringing by packages.

And packages are the only service of theirs that has grown obviously thanks to online shopping. I’d be interested to know how many are delivered on Saturdays once this kicks in.

And it’ll be interesting to see if Congress decides to do something about them choosing to do this w/o congressional approval, esp. since Congress got them into their insolvent mess in the first place.

Between this and the international rate hike, they’re really finally meaning business. (I’m shipping off a package to the UK tomorrow that is $11.48!!! My guesses on what to charge were off by nearly a dollar…ugh)

Very true, although it seems like so many people order nowadays that 30% of your delivery zone is going to be getting a package of some sort on a given day, even a small one. Though of course that’s 70% less work. I’m glad they’re not stopping packages at least, since I often get medicine delivered and know several other people who do as well. You DEFINITELY don’t want to miss that by a day!

Yeah I imagine that’s even a stronger reason than online shopping alone, they’d have their heads chopped off if people weren’t able to get medication. The junk mail can totally wait for Monday.

I just heard about this. I thought they should have cut one day in the middle of the week, since now there are two days in a row without mail. Why not Wednesday or Thursday? And now I’ll feel bad if I get a package on Saturdays, since they will probably be just driving to my house. It should probably just be medications and express.

My guess is because most businesses operate Mon-Fri and they are the biggest users of mailing letters (especially the government)

Post offices in my area are already closed on Sat…hmm. wonder if/how this will affect things in my region.

In Nova Scotia there is no Saturday Canada Post delivery and hasn’t been over the course of my life. Mail on weekends is a foreign concept to me. :) Sadly it seems like the US postage rates are getting closer to the Canadian ones as well. Yuck!

Pretty sure nowhere in canada gets saturday mail unless it’s coming by something like fed ex…

To be honest I think Saturday mail is silly. There are times that I don’t want the real world to find me. Saturday is one of them. Of course if I had it currently and was about to lose it I would likely feel differently.

As a business that ships packages, I’m glad they will still deliver those on Saturday. I think the savings on this will come from the reduced manpower. A smaller number of drivers can handle the Saturday package route. My small town has, I believe, four mail trucks out daily. With only packages being delivered it will probably reduce to one driver.

I’m not very much concerned of the loss of convenience, but rather worried that this is more and more a downhill slope for USPS. Typically, if I ship a 1 lb. package from Massachusetts to Toronto by international first class mail, it cost significantly less than shipping the same package from Toronto to Toronto. That’s ridiculous. But it looks like USPS will become more and more like Canada Post in terms of cost and efficiency.

I know one of the larger cities north of me actually closed their post office, and the city is even attempting to sell the building (this was a few years ago) there is still a sorting facility in the city, for now.
