4000 Years of medicine
I saw this on Facebook and had to share it here.
4000 Years of Medicine
2000BC: Here, eat this root
1000AD: That root is heathen! Here, say this prayer.
1865AD: That prayer is superstition! Here, drink this potion.
1935AD: That potion is snake oil! Here, swallow this pill.
1975AD: That pill is ineffective! Here, take this antibiotic.
2000AD: That antibiotic is poison! Here, eat this root.
going back to nature!
where do you get that root? from the garden which you planted yourself —-ah someday! :)
Love it! Is anyone else itching to get their spring garden planted? It’s almost all I can think about these days.
Me, me, me!!! I’m planning a bigger one this year too… hopefully it will all work out. :)
I’m excited to grow some more windowsill herbs as I still live in an apartment. We were supposed to be in a house this year. Alas! :(
Our soil here is horrid. We are close to a river so its like this strange sinking stuff. I used to have a LOVELY garden. Now I can only grow a few things well. We try with tomatoes and only get a few, and have tried using pots, pickle buckets etc but its not the same. Herbs do wonderfully in this soil but not veggies :(
Azzrian, I have the same problem. My soil is always wet. I had to build raised beds for my veggies. It was a ton of work, but I can’t live in the Garden State and not have a garden. :)
Haha indeed! We did the raised beds for several years and they worked well but then came the moles – they get into EVERYTHING lol
YES just bought the rest of the seeds I need today and I’m going to plant my lettuce soon :D I’m trying all sorts of ridiculous stuff in pots to see if I can make it work. Carrots, beets, zucchini…I think I forgot tomatoes but oh well.
@Azzrian, moles… I’m so sorry. A good friend of mine fought them in her garden last summer. She finally gave up because they seemed to be everywhere at once!
@momo, I wish it were warm enough to plant lettuce here. I guess I could build cold frames, but I can’t work up the energy for that at the moment.
Nope, not putting any roots in my mouth that haven’t been demonstrated to be more effective than the drugs we already have.
Or, to quote Tim Minchin’ Storm, “Do you know what they call alternative medicine that’s been proved to work? …MEDICINE.”
Okay, I think I failed to get my point across here, but I don’t really want to argue much. I’m not saying medicine doesn’t come from plants, I’m saying I will not buy into “medicine” which has no solid research behind it. “Getting back to nature,” smells like pseudo-science to me.
I agree. I should mention I think the above is funny and insightful with regard to many of the opinions I hear, but I’ll be the first to say: I don’t prescribe tea as medicine.
Its okay to have friendly debate :) However I also want to be clear, I am all for modern medicine! No herb is going to replace insulin for type 1 diabetes and without my insulin I would not be typing this. HOWEVER I also know for a fact that specific herbs, taken properly, DO indeed lower my insulin intake. I am 43 and have had type 1 since I was 9 months old. I have throughly used myself, and my daughter, as test subjects lol – specific herbs, do help reduce how much insulin we need. Of course there is the obvious of diet and exercise but given that no changes are made in either of those, add in the herbs, versus without, there is a big difference and this is over years of studying this. Now would I suggest to ignore modern medicine, of course not, I just wish the two could co-inside more. Such as what they are doing at some of the Cancer Centers these days. :)
Oh sorry one more thing, for the record, my blood sugar levels since I began drinking loose leaf tea have also been much better. But I have not done enough study on this yet personally to say which teas, how, or why. And trust me nothing about my diet or exercise has changed since I began drinking loose leaf. Anyway …. I’ll shut up now.
