sbs teas containing maggots

I recently ordered teas from sbs teas. They came in sealed bags with tea and maggots. Yes maggots. Karen the owner of the company won’t answer my calls or call me back. Has been almost two months and no refund. DO NOT ORDER FROM SBS TEAS

Forgive me…I am not trying to start trouble, but in clicking on your profile I see you have no tea reviews and no profile. How do we know that you are not a competitor who is trying to sink another company? There have been similar instances in the past of competitors trying to sink a company or a company trying to pad or inflate the reviews in order to get more business.

Exactly what I thought. I didn’t reply cause I didn’t want to give a bump to this thread. But when someone comes on and makes a new profile just to trash a company without any evidence (pic might be handy) it just seems fake.

SBS teas list a Barb Tuson as owner — and they have some yummy-sounding wine-infused teas. If this is a plot to hurt SBS it may end up backfiring.

Negative. If you check out their facebook page (if that’s to be believed…) there are a few issues people seem to have had but Barb responded with the following:

Hi Janette, I sold SBS Teas in May and have not been involved with the site since then. I do not know if the new owner is actively working the site or not. I had to sell the site because of family health issues and had hoped it would be maintained to the standards I had worked hard to establish. Thank you for your past support. Barb

It’s interesting she said that, because when she sold the company, she said:

Just a quick note about my plans. I have started a travel agency called Tea Time Travels and my husband and I are busy visiting all the places in our bucket list. We just returned from a 14 day Princess cruise to Alaska and it was wonderful. Ifyou haveany travel dreams or plans I would love to help you with them. Email me [email protected]

I take it back, she later said: I am so disappointed that Karen has not responded to you. I spent 7 years building my customer service. I had to sell because my husband has Parkinson’s and we needed to do some traveling together before he is unable to fully function. Hence, the Tea Time Travel—we became travel agents to take advantage of the TA benefits and see the world. I need to work on trying to remove SBS Teas from the title of this FB page. Till we sip together again, Barb

Thanks for the clarification, Sil. Sorry for the scepticism, Aaron, but you’d have much more initial cred with a profile here. Have you contacted the BBB?

Now I want to buy wine-infused tea. Damn.

Sil select said

yeah…i mean it could still be a scam…but at least there’s one other person with an issue on FB with the owner trying to clarify.. so who knows. Though i agree with the profile..why create an account just to come here and say that….

I believe Red Leaf sells wine teas.

Can someone tell me how to post a pic?

cuppaT said

I upload mine to a photo-sharing site and paste the link here. If there’s another way to do it someone else will have to chime in.

You can upload it anywhere and then just copy the image link. Facebook, Instagram, Flickr….

I remember someone posting on Adagio’s fb page about maggots in tea a while ago. Not sure if that was true but I guess bugs could get into tea if it’s not properly sealed… Hope I never come across any bugs in my tea.

Could try selling the bugs to icefishermen? Maggots, waxworms and mealworms are gross in tea but worth a bit of $$$ to icefish with.

If that ever happened to me I would have to stop drinking tea all together. I can handle a lot of things but maggots I can NOT.

Lynxiebrat said

yeah that would put me off tea for a while too. But only for a while.

Alphakitty said

Me too, they gross me out so much. My mom bought cake mix once, mixed it up and left it out for all of 15 minutes… maggots hatched. Couldn’t eat cake for a year >.<

Lynxiebrat said

Oh Gods…I just….don’t want to say…..

I have come across bugs in food more often than I’m willing to admit. Not long ago our pantry got infested with moths and those wormy larvae in ALL the pasta, rice, mixes, cereal, had to throw out just about everything.

I’ve never come across any bugs in tea at least, I was having some genmaicha earlier and the rice does look a little like…

Kittenna said

Alphakitty – I’m surprised you can eat cake at all. I once found a caterpillar floating in the water after my mom microwave-steamed some broccoli. I’m still apprehensive about eating it….. and if I think too hard about it, I won’t be able to.

I had a weevil infestation not too long ago. They didn’t bother me so much – I even cleaned it up myself but MAGGOTS! Eweeeeee those and roaches I can NOT live with.

Lazey said

If they’re crawling in tea they’re probably not maggots (maggots prefer meat) but some sort of worm that eat vegetation/grain. As if that makes a difference :D

Josie Jade said

Azzrian, I agree! I can deal with a lot (I’m in nursing school for heavens sake) but worms in any type of food item means I’m done. Please please please don’t let me ever find worms in my tea. I would die!

Lazey, I believe some species feed on plant matter.

When in Germany I bought a big thing of red lentils as I love them. They had little dark spots to them, but nothing too weird… I figured they were fine and just a bit different than the ones I got in the states. I put them in a glass airtight canister and ate them on and off for a few weeks.

Then one day I went to get the container down for some and found little fly things inside it and went “ohhhhnooooo”.

I cracked open a lentil with fear in my heart and sure enough… those dark spots weren’t part of the lentils themselves, but bugs inside all of them.

I didn’t eat lentils for a long time.

Oh, and now ALL strawberries I eat have to be cut in fourths… because one day I cut some in half rather than just munching them whole and it was full of green worms. gag

Mealworms maybe? (To the tune of Call Me Maybe) Oh this is bringing back horrible memories: I bit into a protein type bar and it had a mealworm in it. I just started screaming. I couldn’t speak! So, of course I contacted the company. Get this: they sent me a brochure that was all about mealworms and how sometimes it just so happens that they are present in their protein bars! Reassuring much? Not! And…they sent me a box of bars and a T-shirt. I could not help but laugh! :: shuddering :: Thanks for letting me share my gross memory! Giving up those protein bars? No problemo! But tea, oh my gosh, if that ever happened…!

my brother thinks Genmaicha is tea with maggots :\

Yes. Try a bowl of parboiled white Minute Rice — the kind that you nuke in the microwave. Very convenient, but I always watch it for a few seconds after removing the lid, just to make sure…
