sbs teas containing maggots
Ya’ll are just terrible!
I like the southern drawl :) yes yes we are aren’t we. I do feel for the OP if this really has happened to them. Honestly I can see being so outraged in not getting a reply that one would find any forum to spread the word. I give the benefit of the doubt considering that things seem truly wonky regarding the facebook page still being somewhat connected to the business and vice versa. I understand selling a business to someone else but some level of professionalism is needed, and detaching from the site in full, starting a new facebook, etc should be key.
As I read on their facebook page the previous owners became travel agents – so they have to be somewhat business savvy – at least enough to detach from their previous business etc..
Anyway I don’t have all the facts I am sure but things do seem strange.
Oh I definitely agree…but it bugged me (No pun intended!) so much that I had to say something…realizing it came out alittle more…..nasty then I intended. Not to mention forum snobby. (Forum snobs are those who think if someone has a blank profile and nothing else, then their opinion is not worth much.)
Hehehe…the southern accent…I was not born and raised south, but I got alot of relatives that were, including my Grams who used to live with my Dad and I, so some of my phrases and occasional accent come from her soft Mississippi twang.
We found worms in my boyfriend’s artichoke about two years ago and neither of us have eaten one since!
After reading this I am struck by one question…Why would flies lay eggs in tea? So I searched Google and found this post from a tea drinker that experienced a similar problem.

I’m used to seeing flies lay eggs on or around meat which annoys me every summer with my cats food but I suppose they may be interested in certain fruits.
But still EUUUCKK imagine finding something animal amongst your tea. It sounds like an Urban Myth horror story for a vegetarian tea addict (like myself).
One of my coworkers brought some tea back from Thailand that was infested with bugs. Not maggots but these little black things. It was horrible. And the worst part? He drank it anyway!
I actually kinda admire him for that! I don’t know that I could do it.
I have always heard there is a certain number of insect matter that is allowed in all foods, so you are eating it if you can see it or not. It makes sense because it would be so hard to keep insects out especially in large food production. I just wonder how they decide the line of what is TOO much insect.
Dustin-You are correct. I took a food sanitation course and there is a huge book of allowances in food in the US, whether it is bug parts, rat bones, hairs, etc. I remember reading one spice had a 33% bug part allowance.
Yup my hubby used to work at a cereal plant and indeed there is an allowable limit in all foods.
Still I don’t want to SEE them lol.
The bigger issue is if they are MOVING!
o my 33% off insect spice! i wanna know witch spice to avoid! or rather need to spice up my steak with to get even more proteïne !
darky-I don’t remember which spice it was since it wasn’t one that I regularly used at the time but after that class I started buying fresh spices and grinding my own peppercorns. Also, I had a huge issue with chocolate for a while.
Lol!!! Thank you so much – at this moment I’m sitting here with chai in hand. (Eyeing it nervously)
with chocolate? Don’t really see what bugs are going to do in chocolate its possible but… its usually molten before it goes into the forms
@Darky, chocolate is allowed a certain amount of insect and rodent traces. You don’t want to think about it, cuz it’s more than I would ok in my own kitchen! :)
This is sooooooooooo gross! I have mostly spicy or chocolate type teas…Just finished a cup of Chocolate Almond Coconut. Delicious, but now I’m nauseous.
It is all really quite gross but honestly you are eating more bugs than you would ever imagine in your every day foods. Don’t think about it because you have been doing it since you were an infant and honestly it does not harm anyone. There are far more dangerous things we consume on a daily basis than the bugs. Heck the artificial flavorings in many teas, or colorings are health wise more dangerous. Not to mention sodas, candies, cakes, etc.
For me, it is a matter of the idea of LIVE bugs being in something, bugs you can actually see and identify. That is just TOO MUCH to take in.
not to mention the bugs that crawl into your mouth while you’re sleeping (evil grin)
Why insane in two days? Your lucky at least you can plan for insane! It just hits me out of the blue :)
i need to learn to punctuate haha two more days (leftbefore i leave..). And i’m going insane!
eesh i should just quit while i’m behind haha
LOL I was just thinking of that…and trying not to be sick over it. Not alot that grosses me out but this topic sure has.
This thread has me now grossly interested. I was aware there were food products that contained animal/insect parts (such as honey and peanut butter) but I did a bit more looking into it.
This link lists the acceptable amounts of insect/animal parts, mold, or mammalian feces allowed in food. It is from the FDA.
Tea is not on the list.
well, I recently learned that “natural raspberry flavouring” isn’t actually made from raspberries, but from the dried anal glands of beavers!
Yea, being vegan you learn a lot of gross things! Not all natural raspberry flavoring comes from anal glands, but some does ;)
Check out: http://webecoist.momtastic.com/2009/05/08/10-weird-and-gross-ingredients-in-processed-food/ for more fun!
Madeline-Yeah, being vegan you certainly do learn about a lot of gross things. I remember somewhat recently when Starbucks was getting a lot of bad press because they used ground up bugs in one of their drinks. I just remember thinking, how did these people not realize that that is what many red dyes are made out of and why were they just attacking Starbucks.
Definitely not all natural raspberry flavorings are made out of that. Ours is made from fruit and other plants.
Natural flavouring only means that the flavour is natural – not that it is naturally whatever you’re trying to replicate. Many natural flavourings aren’t actually the flavour they mimic.
I asked that same question Lala! haha! Apparently the anal glands were used as a medicine at one point, and in the process it was discovered that they tasted like raspberry i guess.
And I wasn’t saying that ALL raspberry flavour comes from them, just that it’s a source of “natural raspberry flavour”. I’m going to guess that it’s probably something that people use when trying to cut corners and save money, as it sounds like the anal glands are cheaper and stronger than using actual raspberries?
Thank you for this thread. I basically died laughing. Will check the source of all future flavoouring. No anal glands for me.
You usually should be able to call if you’re genuinely concerned… I contacted an energy drink company to see where their taurine came from… As a vegan, I don’t like taurine that comes from bull testicles… Theirs was synthetically made, though! :D
actually i’m not that restless with the whole bugs in food stuff (if its used on purpose) not like an infestation. I find all those chemicals and toxins more troublesome u just don’t know how many residue off sprays is left on the food and how it adds up to cancers or stuff over the years
I’ve been reading this off and on all day with much interest and amusement.
Years ago I bought a box of Hostess Ding Dongs full of living white wigglies. Now I am wondering which was worse for me – the larva or the snack cake.
Oh, and isn’t there a tea that is supposed to be made from worm or insect poo?
Sorry for the original posters troubles but what a fun topic.
Ya, there is a worm poop tea, Chong Cha(Worm Tea), i got some lol
