Recommendations for Chocolate and (Hot) Chili Teas
I love chocolate with HOT chili and would like to purchase some chocolate chili tea. I prefer my chocolate chili blends hot, that is hot on the tongue and some heat on the throat as well. No bland, barely there chili for me! Based on these preferences, I would welcome any recommendations for some chocolate tea with really hot chili. Any input would be appreciated, and thanks in advance :-)
Flaming Chocolate Mate from 52teas is the spiciest blend I’ve tried! It’s quite spicy and chocolatey, but they sold out so you’d need to swap for it. There’s also DavidsTea’s Chocolate Chili Chai, which I really enjoy.
52teas/Manteas has Mayan Chocolate which is supposed to be spicy. Not sure how spicy tho. I too am on the lookout for a super spicy chocolate tea!
I’ve tried Mighty Leaf’s Mayan Chocolate Truffle, and it’s got a pretty decent kick to it. The chili is definitely present, especially if you let it sit on the shelf a bit and marinate—the oils from the chili become more potent over time. It’s hard for me to recommend spicy things to people, because everyone has their own idea of what is “spicy enough,” “not spicy enough,” and “too spicy.” Good luck!
Have you thought about making your own blend? I got a chocolate rooibos which has a nice kick from small scrapes of black chocolate and I imagine you can use chilli pepper flakes.
Yes, as a matter of fact I have! The other day I steeped 1 teaspoon TSTE Black Chocolate tea with 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper. The spice/hotness factor was perfect, just what I was looking for…. however, the chocolate in that particular tea didn’t marry well with the chili. It was like I had to really concentrate on my taste buds as I drank the tea in order to taste the chocolate. The chocolate flavor came as a sort of aftertaste. So at least I now know how much red pepper flakes to add to get my desired hotness if I do have to start blending my own. I am thinking that perhaps I need to discern which chili chocolate tea I desire that is already out there, and bump up the hotness factor if need be!
Something which might work well for chocolate tea is pick up some really dark chocolate (70+ % or something) and with a sharp knife scrape it so you have really thin small bits of chocolate – and mix with tea and let it be for a while, and then when steeping the tea stirr it vigourously. or try cocoa nibs? If you already know how much chilli it might be worth it to experiment with chocolate ammount – though a warning, I am not sure there is ever a really perfect chocolate tea, chocolate just might not ever translate perfectly to tea, it is complicated (OTOH Thé du Loup sort of is perfect enough for me, though it might not be for other people. No chilli in that one btw, just an example for chocolate)
David’s Chocolate Chili Chai is really good. I had a sample yesterday.
Yogi has Aztec Sweet Chili.
Yogi Aztec Sweet chili is the only bagged tea i care for
I’ve tried the 52 teas/ Man teas Mayan chocolate chai and loved it. If anyone has tried it and can compare other teas spicyness level to it that would be great. I’d love anything at that level and maybe a touch more.
I take german-style drinking chocolate (tiny balls of chocolate coated in cocoa), and make it in a nice bold black tea, and add whatever spicy things I feel like adding to the black tea while it steeps. I’ve used hot pepper flakes, cinnamon, traditional chai spice blends, etc. and for the tea I usually use an Irish breakfast blend, but I’ll use Lapsang occasionally too
