I think his title is Security Architect? He does coding for security stuff making sure there are no ways to hack into the game and steal stuff or into the system and steal passwords and user names. Responds to security attacks. Basically, he covers your ass. :)

Hahah, that reminds me. Here in the Netherland there has been a criminal case concerning the theft of a virtual sword in – I think – World of Warcraft or something like that. I’m not entirely sure what the outcome was though…

Wow! I’d love to know more about that. The acquiring, theft and selling of virtual items in games is both fascinating and perplexing to me. Going to google to see what I can find on that case!

Ok, I had a few things wrong. The stolen object wasn’t a virtual sword, but a virtual amulet and a virtual mask. The game was RuneScape rather than World of Warcraft. The perpetrators were convicted of theft, but the theft mostly was committed in real life.

One of the key discussions was whether virtual objects are “goods” in the sense of the Dutch Criminal Code and especially the provision regarding theft. The Appeals Court concluded that the virtual objects presented a certain ‘real’ value to the participants of the game, could be ‘held’/‘owned’ and therefore where ‘goods’ in the sense of the Criminal Code.

In their defense the perpetrators also said that taking away another’s virtual property is precisely the goal of the game. However as the “method of removal” (threatening the victim/player in real life so that he would transfer his virtual possessions from his account to that of the perpetrators) wasn’t in accordance with the rules of the game, it was still deemed theft :-)

The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. :-)
