Mistakes you've made related to tea...

I never fully trust teas that require less than 1 minute to steep. I usually add like 10 seconds and then end up tea drunk.

I made that mistake with the Banzhang Co-op sheng puerh from Verdant. I was flying

Verdant ALWAYS gets me!

I hardly ever measure out my tea. I usually eyeball it.

Also, I need to invest in some tins, many of my teas are in resealable bags.

Tasting that one extremely nasty pu-erh. It smelled like formaldehyde tasted like death. (I’ve had better pu-erhs since, but nothing that I actually liked. Most of them taste more like dirt.)

I’ve made lots of mistakes though. Selecting a way-too-sweet iced tea is definitely one of them. I prefer my iced tea unsweetened or lightly sweetened with acidic notes. Forgetting about my tea until it’s oversteeped and/or cold is a frequent one too.

I’ve fallen to nasty pu-erh as well. I almost died.

Chizakura said

See this is why I’m afraid of pu-erh. Even the worst of a different kind of tea isn’t a near death experience. xD

(plus when I hear it being described even by people who LOVE it I’m like “… Ew” xD I guess it’s an acquired taste.)

Over steeping is my biggest. I really should invest in a good timer that makes a loud noise.

The other is letting it cool too long. I get so distracted by other things that I often forget about my mug sitting there.

& not washing my travel mug often enough :/

My biggest regret is that when I started to get into loose tea last year I bought large amounts of “bargain” teas. Then I found out what REALLY good tea tastes like. Now I feel guilty about buying more high quality tea until I drink up the backlog (or give it away).

Chizakura said

That’s me too. Except instead of bargain loose teas, I still have my bagged tea kicking around.

My 72-count box of Orange Pekoe is getting pretty old, but I don’t want to drink it, but I don’t want to throw it out either. It also doesn’t seem like an exciting enough tea to give away (not to mention it’s getting old). So the box just sits there, making me feel guilty whenever I go to make a cup of tea. If only it were a smaller box. Then I could just suffer my way through it, but .. 72? DX

Yes, this is exactly me. I wish I hadn’t jumped on every sale from every tea company, just because it was a good deal.

Use it for iced tea. Add some fruit juices and/or other stuff to make it more interesting.

Don’t torture yourselves drinking yuck tea! Get a hydrangea or other acid loving plant and mix the tea in the soil.

My biggest mistake, recently at least, is buying tea I’ve never tried or brewed myself in a regular size/amount. Samples all the way now….Though I have a feeling I’ll repeat this mistake again anyway. Sometimes a tea smells too good to not take a chance.
And I’m super guilty of over steeping/over heating water to steep tea. Though I’m learning to fix that since burnt tea is awful.

I’m moving so I’m paring things down. I gave away my entire collection of bagged teas on Craigslist. They filled up a shopping bag. Now I still have enough loose leaf tea to drink for at least the rest of the year, although I’ll buy more anyway.

Anyway, when I was digging in the back of my cupboard I found a paper Teavana bag full of Hazelnut black tea. I can’t even imagine how old it is. When did they last use paper bags? When did they last have Hazelnut? I tossed it. Ewww.

Dustin said

Last time I was in a Teavana store, they used waxed paper bags. It was only a few months ago. I guess they figure if they give you the resealing foil bags that they use when they mail you tea, then they can’t push you to buy tins like they do.

Hmmm, I didn’t check to see if it was waxed. It looked really beat up, like it had come with me through many moves. I’m going to check the Teavana site to see if they still offer Hazelnut. I don’t need any more, I’m just curious.

My biggest mistake is not trying different teas. I think its due to the fact that I tried a couple flavored teas that I found disgusting and I started assuming all flavored teas would be bad. however I have been, as of late, sampling some flavored tes and I realize some are pretty good………but some are terrible. As was said above SAMPLES all the way before large purchases.

I second that…If anyone wants to sample some of our tea, simply email us [email protected] and ask for 1-5, we will send them for free.

Lynxiebrat said

Can it only be up to 5? I just checked out the site and saw 6 that I would love to try:)

gmathis said

I just emailed! Thanks for the offer

TeaRunner said

This is so generous! I just emailed, too. Thank you!

david said

Yes, 5 only. :D

Dinosara said

I don’t jump on every free sample offer anymore, but I have definitely been eyeing some of your unique blends. Email sent!

Awesome, I will send you an email soon after I take a look at the teas you have!!!! ps I also follow you on instagram

I emailed also. Thank you for your generous offer!

David — I sent an e-mail for some samples but I’m not sure if you got it. thanks for the offer!

david said

Hi everyone, I’ve received various emails. We are working through them and will try to get them out this week. We won’t include white tea because our sample packaging only holds 1 serving and white tea will get completely crushed.

Dropping half a bottle of honey in a cup by accident and still think it would be drinkable and as i discover today letting some extra strong scented tea with all my other sample _ now all smell so strong i can’t even find the one that may not be infected

Most people on here are probably going to frown at this, but I drown my black teas in milk and sugar. I don’t particularly like doing it, and I really rather wish I didn’t, but I can’t help myself. Nothing quite like a nice earl grey cream with steamed milk.

Dr Jim said

If you enjoy the result, I don’t see why you would call it a mistake.

Lynxiebrat said

Exactly, Dr.Jim:)

I totally agree. Well said!

Ramvling said

Well, I personally consider it a guilty pleasure because protein-based milk destroys the flavanoids in tea, but then again, its still probably better than drinking soda. XD
