Which vegan "milk"?

OK, vegans and lactose-intolerant tea drinkers… I am wondering for those of you that like milk in your tea, which one do you use? I have to have milk in my first cup of the morning and am wondering what the best choice is. I’d like it to not affect the taste of the tea too much but to definitely cream it up. This week I’ve been using Silk original soy creamer, but it’s really pretty sweet. I think I’d prefer something unsweetened…

I really like rice milk or unsweetened soy! Coconut and almond are good but they’re better when you have a tea with a similar flavor profile (i.e. almond milk for chais, coconut milk for teas with lemongrass) since they do affect the flavor a bit.

Thanks… I usually use almond milk for everything, but I do find the taste to compete with the tea too much. I’ve never had rice milk, believe it or not…

I’m with Alphakitty on the unsweetened unflavored rice mylk. You have to watch out to make sure it doesn’t have the vanilla flavor. Hazelnut mylk is so awesome I thought I would mention it. It has a strong flavor though but is really nice if you would like to try something a little different.

I use unsweetened/unflavored almond milk…I wish I could say I made my own, but not the case. Unsweetened Hemp is also good, but to me almond milk is creamier. Did you by any chance use sweetened soy milk? There is unsweetened and I can’t imagine that would be terribly sweet.

Rachel J said

Yep, the creamer I used was sweetened. I will definitely try unsweetened soy but was also just wondering what everyone else uses. Thanks!

Unsweetened/ unflavoured soy, and vanilla almond milk. Depends on the tea. I usually only drink the vanilla with chai blends.

I prefer almond milk. I always have regular – non sweet non flavored, vanilla and chocolate in the house. My brother has an almond milk maker that I could use but have yet to try it. He wanted to sell it but it is SO heavy the shipping alone would be insane. I really don’t think it would be cheaper than buying the organic almond milk I already do.

NOT to go off topic, but I wanted to shout SILK PURE ALMOND DARK CHOCOLATE…Not for tea! But just because it is crazy delish…Can’t have it in the house, it’s too good:).

Haha :) I have been buying a brand simply named Simple Organic which I think is Dillon’s / Kroger’s brand. Anyway I have not tried that dark chocolate and I am now on a diet SO I won’t be haha because if I got it I would drink IT ALL in one day I bet!

Yeah, I use almond milk for everything but I did think it added too much flavor to tea. Maybe a different brand…

Ummm… I didn’t know about that Silk almond chocolate concoction. Lord help me. Sounds like I would like it too much!

I use a rice milk or so delicious coconut milk beverage, or barista style creamer with my cereal, I rarely milk my tea, but these might work for that for you.

What is barista style creamer?

It has to do with the potential froth texture diffrences I think.

I second the so delicious coconut milk stuff. Everything. I don’t think it affects the flavor at all. Most of the time I just like to get the plain creamer and use it in tea. You don’t need much at all, it’s not sweet, and completely unrelated to putting anything into tea they have an awesome coconut milk eggnog in the winter.

Coconut milk eggnog, yum!!!

I love blue diamond unsweetened vanilla almond milk!

That’s what I like to use for oatmeal.

I recently discovered oat milk, and have found it to be the most neutral flavour and best texture to go with tea. makes a decent froth and doesn’t curdle so is good for lattes

Neat, I’ve never had that one

I’ve never heard of that… Awesomely easy to make, love it!

the leftover pulp is great in smoothies, or added to muffins or breakfast bars :)

Plain ol’ unsweetened soymilk works best for me. Sweetened is fine too, if it’s made with sugar (rather than apple juice concentrate, which is surprisingly common in the UK).

Do you prefer cream in your tea? I’m not familiar with people adding cream instead of milk.

I got my first red leaf tea flavored matchas in the mail yesterday and want to try out the cold method with milk but don’t really want 10oz of milk! Which non dairy milk is best with matcha? I typically used Almond milk but am open to suggestions. Does anyone ever just use water? The flavors I have are butter cookie and toffee (which I think would be good with almond milk) and then ginger, grapefruit, and lemongrass which don’t sound good with any kind of milk. What do you guys think?

I make my matcha cold all the time. Both flavoured and unflavoured. I put 1/2 tsp in 6-8 oz water in a water bottle, and shake it up real good.

I’m answering from my very first experience with matcha. I mixed unflavored matcha with coconut/almond milk blend for a frappuccino and it was pretty great! The coconut flavor incorporated nicely with the plain matcha. With the flavored matcha I would prefer plain almond as I don’t pick up almond flavor at all when I use it in coffee, tea, etc.

I think many people just do the matcha in water, hot or cold. I do, at least. :)
