Glass pitcher for making Iced Tea?
Was looking through past threads but never really saw one specifically for a glass pitcher.. So does anyone have recommendations for a glass (or ceramic?) pitcher for brewing iced tea ? I’ve seen and used a few BPA free plastic ones, but I still don’t really like the idea of putting hot tea in plastic, even if it is BPA free.
If your looking for a basic glass ice tea pitcher then Adagio stock one. :)
I have dwelled on this topic for quite a while. Plastics are pretty safe for what they were designed for- use at room temperature. But I too have serious reservations about regularly drinking/eating anything that has been extracted in hot water in plastic. The fad obsession of BPA is over, but plastics are a much more complicated issue than one ingredient (there is a lot more out there than BPA to be worried over), and the safest thing to do is simply never heat anything in plastic.
Anyhoo, I digress. I was on the search for a glass or porcelain pitcher, but refused to pay much for it. They are so overpriced. Finally I found a glass one at the thrift store, only to have a cat promptly knock it off the counter the very first day I had it home!
I remained frustrated for several months, until I realized that I did not have to make the tea in a full-sized container. You can make it concentrated, then put it into a pitcher of your choice & add water or ice to bring it to volume. I now use a large leftover pickle jar to brew the tea, then wait for it to cool, transfer it to a plastic pitcher, and bring it to volume. Use the same amount of tea you would for the whole pitcher.
I also use a giant pickle jar, love pickles.
The other option is to find a double walled pitcher that is glass on the inside and BPA free plastic on the outside. The liquid only comes into contact with the glass but the plastic is cool to the touch and provides some protection from breakage. I have a few travel mugs like this.
I found a bodum iced tea pitcher at a TJ Maxx once for cheap… if you have access to a store like that (HomeGoods, etc), you might want to check there for large glass pitchers.
Do you live near a World Market? I love their glass pitchers. I got mine there, pretty thick glass at that, and they were like well, if it breaks you can return it. Not sure if I actually would have been able to, but I took that as a way of them saying, “it should work, I just haven’t tried it”. I think this one is pretty similar to the one I got: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/rocco-blue-margarita-pitcher.do?&from=Search
I like using a big glass milk jug. They have an indentation that make them easy to hold. Mine come from the local dairy and hold a half gallon.
I use one of these and I love it http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/46535-quadro-57-25-ounce-glass-pitcher-lid.html
I used to use a plastic pitcher but I swear I could taste the plastic in the tea. I found one of those old glass “sun tea” pitchers in a thrift store, and although someone painted ugly sunflowers all over it, it works perfectly for me!
If anyone is interested, I’ve ended up using this: http://primulaproducts.com/teaware/primula-flavor-it-3-in-1-beverage-system.html
I’ve been cold brewing only with it. I love it!!
