I’m irishgirlieknits over on ravelry and I’m on there daily. A friendly group to check out would be the Cuppa Tea? group http://www.ravelry.com/groups/cuppa-tea That’s how I think I found out about DavidsTea and Steepster.

In addition to being a knitting blogger, I also design patterns and sell them there through Ravelry. I have a friendly Irish Girlie Knits Group on there too http://www.ravelry.com/groups/irish-girlie-knits-designs website/blog http://irishgirlieknits.com

Sorry for reviving a dead thread, but I just realized there was a Steepster group on Ravelry. It looks a little dead, but there’s no reason we couldn’t bring it back as well!

Awesome! I’m hoping to see more activity there. It’s fun checking out everyone’s projects/library for inspiration.

Oh, I don’t think we do have a moderator…

I joined. It seems like all I do these days is crochet and drink tea. I have a hard life. :)

Joined! In the middle of crocheting a baby blanket for my BFF (who, after having 16 and 11 year old sons, is going to be having a girl in April).

Nice! I made a crochet star shaped blanket and it took a couple years as I’d get tired of working on it! I work better with quick projects. what patttern are you doing?

The pattern is ‘Soft Purple Baby Blanket’, and it is pretty easy. I’ve been doing a lot of traveling for work lately, and I have been working on it on the plane, at the hotel, etc.

Hi! Can you follow me on Steepster? Then I can PM you about the yarn and tea swap. Or you can PM me on Rav.

Done!

I am also on Ravelry sometimes but do not post much. I learned to crochet and knit at school long time ago. Knitting I forgot. But crochet I do sometimes. Via youtube I learned the shell-stitch which I use for crochet washcloths. I also make shawls, scarfs, small items and I made baby blankets in simple basic stitches for DD in 1999.
I also like viewing yarn stashes at Ravelry. My stash is quite small posted some pictures of it. I have a few UFO’s I have some wrist health issues so crochet shawl is half finished is on hold for now. Over there I am BelleBeryl.

I joined Ravelry a while ago, had been wanting for a few years to take up knitting, (For a while used a knitting loom, like what you would find at Jo-ann’s or Michael’s or other misc. craft shops. But got bored with the limited focus of the looms, got it in my head to try real knitting, now I just need to find someone in person to show me how…(I tried knitting books, dvds, youtube videos, ehh nope! Don’t really want to try classes either, they are $$ and I learn better when it’s 1-1.

But anyways…I too use the ‘favorites’ as a way to say I like how something looks and to ‘drool’ over when I’m daydreaming about being a fabulous knitter and crocheter.

Same nick name as on here:)

I’d ask around. I mentioned that I wanted to learn how to knit and a sweet lady at my church offered to teach me. I also found out that one of my friends is a stellar knitter even though she never talks about it. Maybe there’s a friend of a friend who’d love to help you learn!

I learned while at a karma yoga retreat on Salt Spring Island; a gal pal showed me. Now it’s become an expensive yet very gratifying hobby. ;) We had Knit City here in Vancouver not that long ago, and learning how to knit was free with admission – along with a set of needles and some scrap yarn (although it was meant for kidlets, anyone could take advantage). Maybe see if there’s something like that in your community?

My other suggestion is Meetup. I’ve been to many a Stitch ‘n Bitch, most either in a Starbucks or my LYS, and all are free. Bring a project, or something you want to try, and you’re likely to find someone willing to help. I do however recommend a learn-to-knit course if none of those are options… they’re rarely expensive, and many shops I’ve been to charge on a sliding scale. You could also try posting an ad on Craigslist for help; I’ve met a few folks that way, too.

Try to find a local yarn shop (LYS). When I moved out to Arizona, I signed up for an hour of one-on-one time to learn to crochet. The one hour lesson became two hours (I just didn’t get it in an hour), with follow-up as necessary. Most will be quite willing to help, and now I have a life-long skill and hobby! It was money well spent.

I found my LYS via Yelp; I just typed in knitting or yarn and then my town, and voila! My all-time favorite shop is still the one I discovered in small town Vancouver Island, and I miss it now that I’ve moved away.
