I have to go on a hiatus from tea buying myself. I have acquired a huge stockpile of tea, mostly puerh in the past two years. I have more than 15 boxes full now or at least half full, as well as a giant Yixing container and a tea pumidor mini fridge. I have to stop spending money for a while. If I could just limit myself to one order per month and that’s it.

I have been traveling this summer and have allowed myself to be a “tea tourist” buying what ever I wanted because a lot of things are unavailable in Austin. There are still a few more things I want to pick up before I go home, but I already have so much new tea (mostly Lupicia). I also have an order for TWG teas mocked up and waiting for payment and I have been stocking Home Goods trying to find the Fauchon teas (with no luck yet). I really need to reel it in and set some tea hiatus goals for myself whether it has to do with sip down quotas or no purchases for an amount of time.

I hate this stupid wagon!

haha travelling is the one time i ignore my hiatus!

I have been traveling since the end of May, so it’s been quite some time that I’m off of any hiatus or seen my stash at home to realize how much tea I already have.

i’ve been really good over the past month (no new orders) but I’m planning on placing an order with White2Tea AND buying a Yixing pot soon…. not to mention that I’m going to run out of high mtn oolongs soon

apt said

fuck one of my favorite high mountain oolong vendors announced a sale

Cheri select said

Who is that?

Cheri select said

I saw that on reddit. I know I don’t need it, but I’m letting myself buy tea again and I’m on a HUGE oolong kick right now.

apt said

It’s worth it IMO, especially since it’s so easy to place small orders.

Cheri select said

And sample sizes, too. I’m trying to decide what I want and how much I can spend. I should be working….but it’s not happening.

the Ruby Red and Mi Xiang are great black teas. the Twisted Green is nice and light, pretty nutty. the Baozhong is great for casual daily drinking. The Alishan isn’t worth it. I still need to try the ShanLinXi Misty Mountain (probably great though)

Cheri select said

I am definitely looking at the Misty Mountain. I’m looking at a lot of these, which is why I switched to looking at samples.

And my order arrived today. With this and the TeaVivre order that arrived yesterday, the Butiki order that’s due to arrive Monday, and the Eco-cha order I placed yesterday…Yeah, I’m officially not buying anything else for a while again.

Okay, totally joining this thread. After all of the recent sales (and the tea ware lust topic) I picked up far more than I could ever drink/use if I were to keep acquiring at this pace. I just do not need any more tea or tea wares. I’m going to do my best to save up for black friday sales. Less than 4 months… that’s not too far, right?

I spent three dollars on a black from Nepal. As I have not tried anything from that region yet, I count it as tea research.

The Teavivre sampler counts as last month though.

While I respect and support what you are all doing in this thread, I don’t think I’ve hit rock bottom yet. You can lead a horse to water…

I am now putting myself on tea-buying hiatus! I’m now over 150 teas and I still have my (rather small, but still) TeaVivre sale order on the way, plus a couple stash sale purchases and some samples from an AliExpress seller. So, I definitely need to stop buying tea for a while. I would like to try to get under 100 before I buy more, but we will see. Since most of my stuff is samples, it should go down fairly quickly.

I’m allowing myself one possible exception, and that’s Yunnan Sourcing. If they have a free shipping promotion and/or a sale over 30%, I may make a purchase.

Wish me luck, everyone! :P

You are safe. YS doesn’t have free ship or 30%. Their current sales of 13% are unheard of. But they have reward points!

We can do this!

Hi everyone, I’m new here…but my tea cabinet definitely says I’m not ,“new” to tea! I’ve have well over 100, so I need to stop buying for a while. I was so thrilled to see a no-buy support thread. I just discovered this website recently and was ecstatic to see there are other tea junkies like me out there that share my addiction. I tend to finish 2-3 boxes of tea a week, so for me I go through teas quickly, and keep my tea cabinet stocked because of how frequently I use them. I still need to whittle things down more to a more manageable collection, so I’m hoping this group will help keep me on track. :)

Hi from KY!

Welcome, and nice to meet you! I’m on hiatus, too. :P

welcome aboard the hiatus train! :)

Thank you, everyone! I’m loving this website so far, everyone seems so nice! :) (Also, had been good and not purchases any tea this week!)

I have suppressed the urge to order from Lupicia so far, but I really want to get some honeydew.

Ugh, you and me both, and I haven’t even tried it before! The Napa Blanc sounds good too.

Frolic select said

Honeydew does sound good but as I live near(ish) to the SF store I can get it in person for anyone who doesn’t live close whenever you’re off hiatus. So no using the “well it’ll only be online for a short time” excuse.

I know it’s oh so tempting when something is limited but won’t it be even better when you don’t feel like you have to rush drinking it because you have so much tea to drink?

Thanks Frolic, I may take you up on that at a later date! And you’re right, I can definitely wait when I don’t have to worry about it not being available later. :D

Okay, so I have come up with a plan to help me pare down my cupboard. I have separated all of my teas into two categories: “permanent” teas, which are teas that are known and loved and that I most likely ordered specifically, and “temporary” teas, which are teas that I am trying as samples, that I got from swaps, or that I just don’t like enough to keep around on a regular basis.

I put all of the “permanent” teas into a cupboard and closed the door. I will allow myself one cup per day from these teas. Otherwise, all tea I drink must be from the “temporary” teas. These teas are in boxes on my kitchen counter. I sorted them today so that I would be able to easily find what I am looking for.

Here’s a picture: http://i.imgur.com/4aeseJz.jpg
The box on the right is all straight teas, and they’re separated into baggies based on the type of tea. The tins on the bottom are mixed, I just didn’t want to put them into bags.

The box in the middle is flavored teas, and they’re not sorted in any way. The tins behind the box are also flavored.

The box on the left is caffeine-free teas, and so is the hot pink tin behind.

I also have a box of teas that I really don’t like, and those teas will be put up for swap or rehoming after I’m done going through everything.

How sad is it that I looked at it and thought, “well that’s not That much tea”.

Yes my name is frolic and I have a tea problem.

Cheri select said

What’s sad is that I read this and thought about the fact that I need to sort through my tea pantry and find room for all of the tea that is stacked here in the family room.

I took a picture, but I don’t want to share it.

Frolic select said

I probably should take a picture(or more than one). I need to finish logging my teas so I can see the scale of things.

I’m planning on gifting some teas and maybe participating in some lopsided swaps(Like I send a large amount of tea for a small sample of something I’m interesting in, that way I can try new things and still reduce my cupboard size.)

Cheri select said

Yes, I noticed someone (Frolic) doing that recently….And not letting tea come back. At least I’m getting rid of some of the sample baggies I have. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 950 small zip top bags.

TeaLady441 said

Cameron- that looks like a great strategy! You can stay focusesd with all your teas on the counter, and still motivate yourself with the reward teas. :) I like it, and hope it works out for you!
