I didn’t enjoy many unflavored teas until I started tasting Verdant’s offerings!
Can you explain why you didn’t enjoy unflavored teas and what about the teas from Verdant that changed your mind?
I found them flat and boring before. What I’ve discovered with Verdant is a sweetness, richness, and complexity missing from more boring unflavored teas.
What unflavored teas are you drinking?
The verdant 5 teas for $ 5 box- laoshan black, laoshan green, and a couple of oolongs. I don’t consider the jasmine a straight tea. But I do love it!
Totally a fan of unflavored tea here, but lately I’m finding some flavored ones to be enjoyable as well.
What flavored ones are enjoyable to you?
Haven’t had much, but I’m finding American Tea Room’s Choco*late and H&S’s Paris and Midsummers peach quite nice. And of course, jasmines are one of my favs.
i quite enjoy both. I could live without flavoured teas if i had too, but if i lost my unflavoured blacks i’d be a sad sad panda
If I had to give up my Chinese and Japanese greens I’d be pretty unhappy. Actually black is my least favorite except for iced.
Yes, I love a good unflavored sencha of gyokuro!
Both for me – especially with my recent Butiki orders which I consider on par with my favourite unflavoured oolongs, blacks AND puer.
I need both in my life if I am to survive. Lest I start buying bottles of pop again. :P
I should add as well: Not all unflavoured teas OR flavoured are created equal. Lesson well learned haha
These are exactly my feelings on the matter!
I love both, and get cravings for both at different times. If I go too long drinking only flavored teas (which I’ve been doing a lot of lately in an attempt to find good after-dinner non-caffeinated go-to treats) I find I get a strong thirst for just the taste of good black tea, yum.
I’m mostly the same. I keep thinking I love dessert teas and keep buying them. I’ll happily enjoy a cup, and then the rest sits for months and I force myself to slowly drink them because it seems like such a waste to toss, but I don’t have anyone to give them to.
The exception seems to be Earl Greys and things like Butiki’s Banana Walnut Treat where it’s actually really natural tasting. Doesn’t taste flavored. If it has fruit, real fruit, then I seem to be okay. I also enjoy Jasmine Pearls, which again is a more natural process which is probably why I like it.
Tisanes are a different story though. They’re not tea anyway, so I’m willing to try interesting things.
I have the same thing with most dessert teas. I guess they just don’t leave a huge impression on me, so I never really crave them. Now, if I buy them, I try to just get samples.
I love my unflavored teas especially Tieguanyin and other oolongs, I am just trying out blacks and greens (the only green I have is genmai cha…don’t know if this counts as unflavored.)
I do however like to drink flavoured teas too, I have a couple of flavoured black teas that are a permanent part of my tea cupboard. I recently wanted to try all the desserty teas out there and found I didn’t like them as much as my unflavoured teas. I am finding that I like subtle flavouring that compliments the base tea much more than “overpowering” flavours with little or no base tea taste.
I like both, though I think I can blame crappy bagged tea for ruining unflavored teas for me and me starting my tea obsessions with blends first as they seemed more interesting/less of a gamble. I started to branch into unflavored early on, without research, and ended up with stale stuff I didn’t like, so I went back to blends.
I started branching into unflavored territory by buying from my favorite blend sellers, such as Butiki teas, then now I’ve been really enjoying unflavored. A big step was finally getting proper gear, such as a gaiwan.
I’m a big pu’er nut at the moment! Though I do love my coconut teas!
Unflavored is always my default choice, but there really are some good flavored ones out there. I don’t like heavily flavored teas. I like my flavored teas to enhance the base tea, not to hide completely. If I could only have one or the other, I would definitely choose unflavored.
