Unflavored tea lovers

Unflavored tends to be where I go when I want a good cuppa tea. There are a few flavored that I do enjoy, but they even tend to be not heavily flavored(with the odd exception). Something about the earthy naturalness(is that a word) of unflavored tea that is very comforting. With that being said I will try anything once and I am not opposed to flavored teas.

I understand. The best flavor is TEA flavor. Bliss!

I used to like several flavored teas, but these days I find I really never crave them. I always want tea that tastes like tea.

That said, I’ve tried a few of Butiki’s flavored teas recently, and I was tremendously impressed. They taste very natural and subtle. I think what I don’t like are teas where the flavor tastes artificial or is overdone.

The ones from Butiki I like are Maple Pecan Oolong, Caramel Vanilla Assam, and Almond Indulgence. They are delicious.

At the start of my tea journey I drank only flavoured but several years in I prefer to drink unflavoured blacks, some herbals and the odd blend. I do not like green, white or green oolongs but roasty oolongs can be really nice. I want to like puerh but I still have to force myself. Hopefully that comes eventually. Green tea makes me nauseous though so I gave up on that.

I like to drink both, but lately I’ve preferred unflavored teas. I tend to like the unflavored teas more, too. Something about the natural flavor as opposed to added flavor makes for a really satisfying cup. That being said, I do have some favorite flavored teas, and they definitely have their place in my stash. Some of Butiki’s flavored teas are really nice, and the flavors tend to be more natural tasting than full on flavored. I’ve also had a few flavored teas from other companies I’ve enjoyed.
Overall, though, if I had to give up one, it would be flavored tea. Couldn’t live without my unflavored blacks and oolongs!

I prefer unflavored. Hands down. Blacks are my favorite, but I’ve learned to enjoy oolongs, greens, and whites too.

But, I’m trying to lose a few pastry pounds and replacing sweet treats with dessert teas and tisanes is part of that plan. (It has helped in the past.) I’ve been trying one flavored tea after another and have only discovered a few that I enjoy. Hopefully the Butiki order that should be at my house after work can change all that and I can find a source for flavored teas that don’t make me crinkle up my nose in disdain.

Also, I find it far easier to drink a mediocre (or even crummy) plain tea than a mediocre flavored tea. Flavored teas have to be very, very good for me to like them.

Totally agree on that last point. Meh unflavored teas will still be drunk, meh flavored teas go down the drain. xD

I like both. I primarily drink flavored teas for dessert, and anytime else, it’s unflavored teas. But when it boils down to preference, I say unflavored – they’re more nuanced in flavor and aroma, and are generally better in quality.

Yeah unflavoured comes out on top anyday.
The complexity and flavour is on a whole other level.

I prefer blacks and white tea. However a nice sencha is heaven sometimes :)
Do try a japanese black!

What Japanese black do you recommend, I’ve never had one, but I do drink a lot of greens from Japan. They were my first tea love.

I tend to drink mostly Chinese black and Darjeeling teas during the day, but really need decaf teas in the evening, and while I’ve found a couple half-decent Darjeeling decafs, I really rely on flavored teas in the decaf space, especially Harney’s Vanilla Comoro.

Tried silver needle or white peony? I find them exellent in the evening.

Sipagolda said

Unfortunately white teas are often very high in caffeine so if you’re sensitive to it I’d avoid them in the evenings.

Dag Wedin said

Yes, if you are sensitive to caffeine try rooibos or honeybush. Crysantemum is also quite nice.
If you want to lower caffeine in your tea use low water temperature. As is common with white and green teas.

It is very true that some white tea varietals are higher in caffeine simpy because they use more buds/newly formed leaves.
As for exacpmle darjeeling whites. The more buds the more caffeine.
However the to varietals fujian silver needles and white peony is naturally low in caffeine. and if you brew them at low temperature 70-80C you will get a tea with very low levels of caffeine.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to add those to my next order.

I tried rooibos, but got a weird reaction: a strong post-nasal drip leading to a sore throat. When I searched for this effect, I found a lot of people claiming that Rooibos has an anti-histamine effect, and I get the same sore throat when I take antihistamines for my allergies. So, I stopped taking the rooibos (some day I’ll try to swap it out on steepster – I have an unopened 4 oz bag of one type and several partial bags).

I love unflavored tea, they are my preference by far. Nothing like the subtly of a light Chinese green or the unfettered boldness of a Japanese green. I love them all: green, red, black, white, yellow, and oolong. I do enjoy some flavored teas; mostly jasmine(sqee!) and spiced black. But push comes to shove and you’ll get my Chinese greens from my cold dead hands.

Sipagolda said

I agree on jasmine but I haven’t enjoyed a spiced black since the late 70s. I feel the same one about Japanese greens that you feel about Chinese greens.
