Having a 2009 Douji “Fragrant Brick” tonight.
Breaking this out after about a year and a half in the “pumidor”. I remember this smelled nice and had a very light color to it.
I am back sometime later for a proper review.
First noticeable thing is this has become a bit more loose and easier to chip off. The color hasn’t seemed to vary that much on the dry leaf from what I remember.
I got about 10 grams off the brick to brew in the easy steeper that I have. I gave about a 10 second rinse due to the fact that bricks are more tightly pressed and take a bit longer for the water to get in there.
The rinse water actually looked a bit more amber than the green I recall. It is a 5 year old so it is still “teething and growing”.
I gave two 5 second steeps with about 5 ounces each. The brew is giving a scent of warm wet hay and a whisper of smoke. The tastes are of pine and some bitter that fades into a caramel touch of sweetness very quickly. A bit of astringency that leaves quickly. Swirling the tea in the mouth gives you that thick feel across the tongue.
A very nice brick from them and I think it is progressing along nicely.

Flavors: Bitter, Caramel, Pine, Smoke, Sweet

The White 2 Tea 2012 Spring Bulang Cake Veck sent me!!! I love how much of a kick it has!

I had Bulang Beauty from Tea Urchin (from Stephanie) yesterday… and wow that was one of the best teas from my life. It was punchy like a bulang, but floral and delicate like an oolong.

I keep sticking my nose in the old wine cooler I store all my sheng in today… it smells like bliss.

Hey Phi, do you know how the Bulang Beauty compares to the Bulang Mini-cake and the New Amerikah 2? I own a cake of NA2 and the Spring bulang, I love both of them and I was wondering how they compares to the Bulang Beauty!

Phi said

Mini cake is a lot punchier. Bulang beauty had a lot more oolong style notes to it, and a balanced punch. Never tried NA, so not sure there.

I’m happy to have the NA2, I’m not a big fan of oolong nor pu oolong! Thanks for the info!

This morning I’m trying Jalam’s March tea club offering, a Bulang ripe. Wow, Jalam sure knows how to pick good tea. It is strong, very smooth, and simple. Not earthy, just dark, a little bitter, and subtle chocolate. The quality of the broth is amazing. Just super.

This sounds very nice!

Mysterious Kunlu sheng from Veck… so good! It has the sweet bitter I love about bulang, but in a more subtle form. I can’t seem to find any Kunlu sheng for sale though! Just a ripe with flowers from Yunnan Sourcing.

Let me ruin the mysterious element for you by saying it was Crimson Lotus’ 2014!

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, so I didn’t part with that tea in vain. (I really liked that one too! Maybe I’ll be able to snatch some of their Kunlu this year.)

We do have Kunlu Shan sheng puerh for sale this year. It was a rough road, but we made it back up there. The tea we brought back is pretty amazing. We’re getting it pressed tomorrow.

I knew I could count on you! ^^

Phi said

Yay Glen is our Kunlu savior! I need to start a layaway on that and the 2 kilo gram brick of bulang gushu.

you really gonna keep 2kg of bulang? maybe split it with some other bulang fiends?

Happy Saturday morning! It is quiet here at the homefront after this morning’s blood moon and lunar eclipse. The birds are chirping, the snow has finally melted here in Buffalo, and it’s time for a relaxing morning shu.

So I pulled out the 2010 Long Xin Tang Gong Ting Ripe by Yunnan Sourcing.
What a great bargain from Yunnan Sourcing. I bought this knowing nothing about it, except that it is “gong tin” heavy, and I usually like a solid gong ting (meaning tribute grade, I think). Being only $14, I added this to a recent order. It is quite good. Dark but not musty, fairly smooth with some bitterness. Early steeps were sweet and jammy. I wish that had held on longer, it was a perfect example of sweet fruit in a ripe tea. Later steeps were still very good, with more subtle fruity notes. This tea has a very high quality to price ratio, really amazing for the price. Where can you find such a good cake for $14? Only available on the YS China site, though they have some not so costly shipping options these days.

Thanks for the review Rich!

I’ve been looking for a new GongTing shupu to buy, since I’m running dangerously low and it’s something I like to keep in my collection.
I’ll keep an eye on this one!

Now I just need to wait for my new paycheck… ;þ

Looks like this is available on the U.S. site as well for a couple dollars more.

Thanks for the heads up, I happen to be in Europe though, so there’s little to be gained from the US site for me. ;)

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. im trying to place an order over the weekend. Thank you so much !

I’ve had a 2003 Fengqing sheng, but not that 2003 Fengqing sheng, sorry Boychik. :þ

If you end up getting it let us know how it is!
I, too, am quite curious about that particular cake. :)

Thank you Veck. I’m getting a sample 100%. But I was thinking if the cake is better idea considering the current sale ;)

It was pretty intense and smoky in the brew if I recall correctly. That has free shipping if you wanted to compare pricing.

jschergen said

looks like it is on the YS US site now too!

Cwyn said

YS has been carrying Fengqing teas for awhile. From what I’ve read, the flavor tends to be pipe tobacco-ish, if you’ve had sheng with that taste you will know what that is.

boychik said

Thank you so much everybody. I will get a sample. It’s expensive to get the whole cake and be disappointed. I might like it too. Who knows ;)
