2000 yiwu Shan sheng. It lasted a long time but I can’t get my tastebuds around the wet storage taste. There was camphor and some sweet, and earth, but the storage taste was forefront for me even up to over 15 steeps. Maybe even 20.

I’m not used to that kind of taste though so that will defo have a major effect on my view

Air it out. In six months to a year will be very different.

Ah it was just a sample from the tea club. I leave them a week or two and drink them as the come. It wasn’t to my taste anyway :)

Is that the brick from YS?

Today I drank a raw from Yunnan Sourcing USA, bought a while ago, the 2006 Feng Qing 7813 Recipe Raw Puerh Tea Cake. In the end I have to give this a mixed review. There were good and bad points. It started with a taste of leather and tobacco. This taste didn’t last too long and gradually transformed into something nicer. In the end I found a note that I describe as slightly tasting of sour sweet prunes. By this I do not mean there was a noticeable sour note, just a little with the sweet note. In the end it was a fairly nice tea. Just took a long while to get there.

Today I drank a free sample that came with my order to Berylleb King Tea on EBay, the 2003 Yunnan Nonpareil Lao Cha Tuo Old Tea Nubs Ripe Puer. This was another tea that I have to describe as just short of phenomenal. It was fantastic. There was a little fermentation flavor but not very much. A little bit crept in around the third steep once the tea opened up and lasted perhaps a total of two steeps. The flavor was very clean. This was another tea that had clearly been stored well. There was a sweet note that persisted throughout the twelve steeps I gave the tea. There were no negative storage notes of any kind, not that I noticed anyway. This is one that is going on my list of teas to buy. As I recall from looking up the price it is somewhat expensive but not incredibly so. This was really good tea. I didn’t notice any qi from it but then again you usually don’t get any from ripe. Well worth it without any qi.

2013 yong de blue shou. Finished my sample of this one today. Earthy, mushroomy but with hints of chocolate or something that pulls it into nice & tasty territory. Slight richness & fermentation flavour but a nice kind.

6.5g in 100ml gaiwan & I did about 12-15 steeps before it gave out

well today was bang wei, & that one from TU that has the kids on the wrapper, cant remember the name. It was fruity & shengy, not camphor or too sour

I now have really sweaty hands, feet & having hot flushes. Not sure im totally happy about this but anyway :D

W2T Pin again today. This seems to get better every time I have it. Well, except for that one time, when it was pretty insipid. A nice cooling effect in the mouth today, along with plenty of qi. Brewed more western style, as opposed to my more usual clown-car-gongfu, and the tea doesn’t seem to mind.

2007 Shuangjian Mengku Mu Ye Chun 002 today, acquired from the bowels of taobao (last I checked, the seller no longer has it in stock). Supposedly Guangzhou storage, but since I haven’t seen the inside of the warehouse, or when it was acquired by the seller, ect. this means basically nothing; but one can hope. A generous thanks to Hobbes, who I doubt is reading this, and everyone else who expounded on the virtues of this tea.

This is a strong tea, which can potentially %$#& me up, so I used relatively few leaves, probably at most 1/3 of what I use when brewing up the Pin. Roughly the same infusion times. Nothing close to the thickness of the Pin, but there is some thickness there. Comparable qi – the Pin might be smoother, but the MYC appears to be stronger, despite using less leaf. The Pin gets bonus points for filling the mouth, gloopiness, ect. but the MYC is somewhat active in the mouth, and therefore interesting enough. More roughness in the MYC, but it’s drinkable enough.

The Big advantage of the Pin seems to be that you can push it and get the awesome mouthfeels that result, but otherwise it’s hard not to call the MYC the “winner”, at around 1/9th the price for a session.

400g? If so, Dragon Tea House on EBay has it at $42 or so, at $38 on Aliexpress. Lincang Yongde.

You’re probably talking about the same cake, but just to be certain, I’m referring to this one: http://half-dipper.blogspot.com/2008/12/2007-shuangjiang-mengku-muyechun-002.html. Unless something has changed, you should be able to get it for around half of the price (after shipping and fees) from taobao. I’d be cautious about storage.

King Tea in Aliexpress also seems to have the 002 in stock.

It is the same tea, but looks like the 001 version instead or the photo is of first pressing. Hard to say what Hobbes would think of the cake now, his post was many years ago, his tastes have changed over the years and he now seems to prefer highly bitter tea over sweeter productions like this.

I can’t speak to the 001. Did you read the addendum and follow up post from Hobbes? In 2012 he liked the cake enough to try and acquire more, but preferred his home storage. Hobbes sure does enjoy his bitterness, but he may enjoy a bargain even more ;)

Cwyn said

I would say the same about my storage. Around 2011-12 Hobbes posted that he felt he had enough factory teas and wasn’t going acquire much more. A lot of what he posts over the past couple of years are samples sent to him or things he already owns.

Today I had my first gongfu session in days. My new job has impacted my tea drinking. Today I drank the 2012 Haiwan Ultimate Premium Puerh Tea Brick 500g. I didn’t actually have all that much of this as I brewed it in a 50ml gaiwan and limited myself to eight steeps. But it was a tasty if expensive shou. It’s actually quite overpriced in my opinion. It is very good. It had a moderate amount of fermentation flavor and that flavor was not unpleasant. It was sweet with little to no bitterness. There were some notes that I would tend to describe as dates notes. I really didn’t notice any chocolate notes. It was very good even if it was seriously overpriced.

Over the last several days I drank a cheap young raw cake that I got from Amazon (1) taking it grandpa style. I’d pour boiling water over a generous lump in the bottom of a tall pint mug, and replenish the water once or twice when it got down close to the leaves.

(1) It’s the “Dechunxian® Yunnan Premium 250g Pu-erh Puer Pu Erh Diet Tea,100% Natural Organic Tea Leaves, produced From High Mountain Ancient Tree (Raw Tea Mild Flavor)”
