pu-erh of the day. Sheng or Shou

Today I am revisiting the 2005 Golden Unicorn from Bana Tea. As I plan on staying up late tonight, I decided to stick to the trend of late, and am brewing 17g/150mL. Can’t say I would recommend my crazy brewing methods of the past few days, but I have been enjoying them.

As usual, the highlight of this tea is the qi, which is a light stoner effect of sorts, at least to my body anyways. There is some activity in the mouth, but I remember there being more in past sessions. I’ve lost count of how many flash infusions I’ve brewed by now, and this shows little sign of letting up. I’m getting a slight sourness of sorts in the taste, but also none of the barkiness taste I didn’t care for in past sessions of this tea – I guess that’s a wash. I’m tempted to grab a second cake of this, simply for the pleasant feels, but maybe I should revisit the 2007 Yi Shan Purple from YS first. I think not as strong(?) but it does have a similar sort of effect on me.

The new Bitterleaf Teas release of 2016 “Alter Ego” huangpian sheng. Deliciously light, sweet, camphor, and big qi.

CL’s Qiao Jun in my cup today. Both deep and light on the finish. Is altogether a good introduction back into my tea drinking fetish Lol..

Storage check on 2014 Ban Payasi from Chawangshop, crock stored for two years. Cake has tightened up a great deal and notable browning and staining of the neifei. Seems to be coming along well. Notes of hay, honey, bitter lemon. Smells like a sheng now and not just green tea.

2015 Hidden Song from Crimson Lotus Tea – Had a session early in the week that had no high notes at all, just very vegetal and unpleasing. Today the high notes appeared, and yet again the tea is delicious! Such a strange tea, the aroma goes up and down depending on its mood.

2002 White Whale from white2tea. Tasty as ever, seems to be doing very well, smoother than I remember, full of woody and medicinal notes, and great longevity. Oily and a medium-full body! Wish I had stocked up on this :(

Hidden song is indeed moody! I had sessions that I loved as well as meh ones. Can it be due to it being so young? I’m not an expert…

@mcrdotcom, @elena-z I get occasional fits of moodiness from teas that I am familiar with as well. It’s hard to track down a single cause. Sometimes I can get dramatically different experiences from the same cake.

Give the tea a rinse and then wait 15 minutes or so before brewing. I find this usually gives a better brew for most puerhs.

Thank you mrmopar, I’ll try that!
And just to be clear, I do love this tea! Out of all Crimson Lotus Tea raw puerhs that I’ve tried this year, this is my favorite.

Today I started with Puerhshop.com’s 2010 American Hao 1002-LBZ. This was followed by Yunnan Sourcing’s 2004 Tai Lian Yi Wu Zheng Shan and now I am sipping one of Paul’s favourites: White2Tea’s 2007 Rui Chang Xiang Yiwu.

All very good to excellent teas.

2008 Haiwan LBZ sheng bought from Adventure in a Tea Cup. I was already going ape after the first 40ml cup! :-O))) This tea was excellently stored in Singapore and I was very lucky to have bought one cake.

I had 90s loose sheng – camphor aroma today, also from Adventure in Every Cup.

It had a definite aroma. Of camphor. I think this tea is a relatively simple value proposition, it’s there in the name. Good stuff.

Today I’m drinking a sheng sample from Bitterleaf sent to me by a good tea friend, the Dear Comrade 2007 Spring Bulang Raw Puerh. I don’t always like semi aged sheng. It’s not for me like semi aged shou which I almost always like. This one overall I did like. It had fairly strong notes of leather and tobacco in there at first. A note of cherry crept in there too but unfortunately did not last. It slowly evolved in to something sweet in comparison to where it had started, not the sweet of a young sheng mind you. Overall this was a good tea. If I ever get around to an order with Bitterleaf I would consider this one for sure.

Some kind of sheng I found in an unlabeled jar, seems to be about 10 YO. I think it’s probably a Mengku. Has a lot of dust and fine chop so I’m steeping it as briefly as I can manage.
