Tried the 2015 Chawangpu Hekai Gushu yesterday, thank you ElenaZ. Was only able to make it through 6 steeps and will pick up again this evening. The first few steeps yielded a lovely brief huigan, steeps that followed were characterized by wood and bitterness. A bit thin overall, although the first steep was very smooooooth, which always means a certain amount of body to me. The body just didn’t last long.

Agreed on the body. I still haven’t figured out quite why this tea is the best diuretic of any sheng I own. I get painful edema, and two cups of this cures the ache in my legs and feet. I’ve got maybe a third of a cake left.

That’s both fantastic and frustrating.

Cwyn! Yesterday I drank one of my favorite shengs, 2006 kokang from What-cha. I think Chawangshop carries it too. I had not noticed it before with less leaf, but it was strongly diuretic with generous leaf. My rings haven’t been so loose since I can remember. I’d be happy to send you some.

Edited to add that I know it’s not really sheng since it is from Myanmar. ;)

Why is not sheng if it comes from Myanmar? Sheng simply means raw.

curlygc said

Perhaps Zennenn meant to say that it is not Puerh.

Zennenn said

No, I had thought that shou and sheng are terms used only with puerh. I’ve certainly never seen them used unless with puerh. Instead I’ve seen “raw dark tea.” Now I know that non puerh can be called sheng, too. Much simpler. Thanks!

curlygc said

For what it’s worth, I’ve never heard a non-puerh referred to as sheng either!

Puer is a designation like champagne. There is identical stuff that can be found in Guangxi, Laos, and Burma, but may not be called that because of the restrictions won by Yunnan Province. I think this was done more to restrict the Hunanese and Cantonese from jumping on, which they do anyway with their ripe fakes. Guogan is obviously puer, however.

2002 Gu Fo Aged Ripe Puerh Tea Brick YS. Quite mellow & sweet, slight humid-stored taste but no mould. Im digging it, light & fruity as opposed to thick & earthy. Reminds be a bit of some fruity Heicha I have tried, which is a new obsession of mine

2004 Gu Pu’er Cha Ma Gu Dao Sheng

Defo the kind of storage I can get into, its there but not overpowering. This later part of the year for me is about learning more about regions & storage for sheng & I like this style. Even though the tea itself isnt too fruity or camphor the taste doesnt get too boggy, its the right side of earthy, not too savoury.

Sweet thick mushroomy stuff. I think i might like it a bit fruiter but im not throwing it out of bed :)

2007 Menghai 8542, just broke off a 1st taste. Orange soup, sweet, smokey.

Who knows about this tea? http://steepster.com/teas/mx-tea-taobao/73990-2006-haiwan-lao-tongzhi-deep-mountain-gushu

I was thinking of getting more, and found MX Tea had sold out. It’s now on Aliexpress for like $60/cake. When I tried to search Taobao (https://s.taobao.com/search?q=2006+%E6%B7%B1%E5%B1%B1%E8%80%81%E6%A0%91) I got a lot of hits for a different wrapper, most of which seem to be about ¥300.00. Is it the same cake? There are a few for ¥200.00, which is about what we paid for the other I think.

You can grab one here. The seller is a good one. Tell him John sent you if you grab one and you are from Steepster and he may be able to get you a discount.

Misty peaks controversial sheng. Seems to have aged well in my dry climate, other teas have gone flat but this is still ok. It’s in wood though, maybe the wood is slightly moisturising it. Or the tea is just ok with dryness. Some others are not I’m finding

1990’S HK style W2t Sheng. Its is very easy to drink with a slight spicy soft mouthnumbing.

Im really enjoying learning about different storage styles, & guangdong comes up quite a lot. These have been dry stored as well so they are good for my palate, only a bit of humid funk but im used to that now, defo not ‘funky’

2014 White2Tea New Amerykah 2. Probably no one cares that I’m drinking this tea yet again, but this has, despite my expectations, become a daily drinker of sorts for me.

This morning, before work, this tea was solidly hitting the daily drinker stride, pretty simple and easy on the body. Returning to this later in the day and I can really feel it, and it’s much more interesting. Put this one in the ‘win column’ for giving teas a rest, I guess.

I tried a sample of this expecting it to be stupefyingly bitter but found it to be rather easy and sweet. I guess he used similar names for a two very different teas.

The first session I had of this (airsick?) was stupefyingly bitter (but somehow still quite smooth). Every other session has been more on the sweeter side though. I guess the main connection between the two editions may be “bulganess” or strength or something as opposed to bitterness. I haven’t tried the 2013 edition though, so it’s hard to say.

I bought a second cake of this awhile back. It is a very good value considering how big the cake is.

Im guessing hei cha should be in this thread as pu’erh is a type of hei cha?

Anyway 1990s CNNP Guangxi special grade Liubao Chawangshop. Seriously old tasting, slightly salty almost in the coffee spectrum ripe tea. Its pretty earthy

2015 Mannuo from Chawangshop, I’m only in early steeps. Huge leaves. Haven’t tried Mannuo as it is difficult to find. The tea has moved past the early green stage and tightened up. Some floral, early steeps bitter. Not a high grade tea but a good learning experience.
