Drinking shu pu at 3:20am…loose, uncompressed shu that looks like a pretty good quality tea. Just a touch earthy and nice and smooth, this was a free gift from a vendor here in HK. Nice little bag of shu and it appears to be an entire tael of tea! Not a bad freebie.

2000 Chen Yun Ming Yi Wu Zheng Shan that Terre de Ciel in France got for me on their last trip to Yunnan. Well matured sheng in dry storage although there is a tiny little hint of wetness. Slightly sweetness in the first 3 or 4 steepings followed by a great taste for the following 5 or 6 steeps with a tiny bit of bitterness. Not sure how many steeps it can last as I drank it in the office and had to stop after 10 plus rinse and it was still going very well. Not much caffeine left for the ones who worry about that.

Today I am drinking the Grizzly Brown 2006 Meng Hai Tu Si Ripe Puerh from Bitterleaf teas. This was quite a good tea. There was little in the way of fermentation flavor. It had pretty much cleared. I found a note of sweet bamboo shoots in steep three. It continued to be a smooth semi sweet puerh throughout all twelve steeps.

Isnt the strongest tasting shengs but it has a certain distinct flavour I have a hard time placing, but kinda like. a little one-dimensional maybe

2006 Sunsing 10th Anniversary Cake from Pubertea. 13g/100mL.

This strikes me like it would make a great daily drinker; which is a bit of a backhanded compliment. This had zero edge and think I could have easily steeped it out in one go, which is backhanded compliment #2. My impression of this tea was tainted by having had the ‘04 Yunnan Treasure’ from Bana Tea before it; I thought the flavor was quite similar, and while the ‘Treasure’ had a nice, solid qi, the qi of today’s tea was nascent at best. This tea wins on enema effect though, strong and pleasant – part of why I think it may be a great daily drinker.

What’s with the low leaf quantity!? Going soft?

I was using 17g/150mL before; now 13g/100mL. So actually, I went heavier :)

2012 Yin Hao Tuo

Just 3 years of accelerated GuangDong express composting and there’s almost nothing left of the original character of these leaves, wow.
Anyhow, surprisingly thick soup for a plantation tea and smooth drinking with a bit of honey and some early signs of old books/vanilla with just a bit of adstringency left but a bit boring overall. No real qi to talk about either; I’d pick any other tuo in my stash over this stuff.

Next please …

Woke up early today and had my first try of the 2016 “Lazers” cake included in the sheng Olympics sponsor box. Apparently this has LBZ written on the wrapper, which confirms the fact that I may be drinking puer ;). My first impressions of this were really good, as this was really easy drinking for a young sheng, and had a bit of pleasant feels. Unfortunately, this tea has a strong flavor that is a component to the taste that I dislike, so I couldn’t help ending the session prematurely. My guess/hope is that the tea is just airsick, and the flavor I didn’t like will recede in a week or two; we’ll see.

Undaunted by my first session, I moved on to another tea from the box, a 2016 border tea from chawangshop. I was actually expecting this to have some young sheng edge on the stomach, but to my surprise this went down with zero qualms. I wouldn’t say this tea was particularly elegant, but I enjoyed it and happily steeped it out.

Drinking 2016 Meng Song Sheng from JalamTeas. Wonderful vegetal/sweet/bitter flavor. The energizing energy off this tea is perfect for work, without any harsh body effects.
