Drinking a 2014 yiwu sheng from misty peak teas. Excellent tea given the price. Nice mouthfeel, citrusy notes and beautiful tea leaves. I would be remiss to not mention that I find myself drinking Nicks teas more and more.

I got into some of that yesterday. It’s really delicious. Peaches is what I got at a lower temp, like 180. I noticed if I went hotter, I got some smoke and astringency, but if you keep it low temp, you got really sweet peach/apricot nectar.

Nice! I may have to try that later =)

2006 Jinggu Ripe Dragon Egg Pu-erh Tea by PuerhShop.com
I think this is the lightest shu I’ve ever tried. It is very smooth, no earthiness, just a light flavor. Good quality, I do like it. It’s different, and interesting! And of course shaped like a real dragon egg, so it is fun to handle. Not sure if there is a real dragon in there or not…

Today’s tea is a very robust and lively 2005 Six Famous Tea Mountain Mengsong Sheng. It is all smoke and tobacco with a hint of floral, a hefty kick in the teeth of kuwei and a touch of astringency. There is nothing subtle about this tea and I like it. It’s just a shame that I cannot find it again on the Yunnansourcing site, because I would have bought a whole beeng to sample every year or so to see how it develops.

2010 Rongzhen Reserve Ripen Pu-erh Tea Cake by PuerhShop.com
Almost done working my way through tasting all my teas from a recent puerhshop order. They have some great ripes at good prices. Today’s is a nice smooth shu, tastes noticeably different than others I’ve tried. A bit musty, in a good way, no off flavors, medium richness and somewhat deep. Tasty.

I had a sheng today 2005 JINUO SHAN YOU LE “RED SUN DRUM” PU-ERH TEA
from yunnan sourcing.
I really liked it and I’ll be spending more time with it very soon.
I got a lot of different notes from this one and the whole tea seemed to changed as the steepings went on, I got many many steeps and at one point it tasted as if i were drinking an oolong.
I think i may have used a bit too much leafe in my gaiwan because I at first i got a little bitter from it with a 20 sec steep, I timed it down to starting at just 10 secs and it was pretty good.
I got many different notes on this one as it changed through the steepings it was vegetal and mineral and sweet and bitter and smokey and fruity and much more, kinda complex to me. Very Good, I’m sure I drank way too much of it because it just wouldn’t play out, now I got that funny feeling in my head.

Having Butuki’s “Wild Purple Bud” tonight.
Breaking this one out tonight. Seems to be a “Unique” type of tea when I opened the bay. Primarily 2 to 3 buds on each sprig and varying colors in depths of the purple shade.
Pulled out 8 grams and the Gaiwan for this one. Gave 5 second rinse and let the leaf sit for a couple of minutes.
Wet leaf has a vegetal aroma with just a little wisp of smoke in the nose. Did a brew with a 5 second steep to start things out. Color is almost a light honey color in the cup. The cup funnels the aroma to you as you sip. A touch of leather and a hint of bitter. Unlike some purple buds this has no where near the bitterness of most. It turns to a sweet flavor with a touch of greens on the end. it will give you a touch of the tongue buzz that good shengs will.
Second steeping using same parameters as first. Flavor opens up a little stronger with more of the green and less of the smoke. It still brings the nice tingle and sweetness as in the first, just a bit more pronounced.
I believe this will be one I can drink on for a couple of days as the first set of infusions haven’t opened the buds up all the way. That just means more goodness still inside.
This is on par with the better Purple Bud teas I have had and way better than any big factory one I have had.
Nice relaxing great tasting tea.

Flavors: Green Beans, Honey, Leather, Smoke

2009 Boyou “0509” today. This is part of a parcel of samples I received from a good tea chum and which I am slowly working my way through. At this rate I shall feel permitted to try some newer samples soon! The Boyou is wet wood with a tiny hint of cinnamon and cedar, and a thickish mouthfeel. Its main selling point, though, is that it is so smooth and mellow that it could be the compere at a jazz club.

Revisiting the 2007 Mengku Organic Single Estate bing once again. This tea is definitely plantation material but its not so bad. Its sweet with a nice hint of aged notes just beginning to come in. I don’t get any unpleasant bitterness but that could be due to steeping parameters (I’m going with ~6.2 grams / 100 mL with steep times ranging from 5-15 seconds). There is some mouthfeel to this tea but I feel that this is the area where the tea lacks. Overall, a good value tea. 79/100. Has anyone else sampled this series of bings?

Fengquing Ancient Tree Raw Pu-erh Cake 2014 by Teavivre

I got a sample of this tea from Teavivre as a prize in my sample packet during the Spring Tea Review Giveaway.

Oddly enough, this one does not appear to be on TeaVivre’s website for sale yet! Sneak Preview? Count me in! :)

This is a sweet, bold, assertive young sheng. Some apricot notes. I believe this is the first puerh I have drunk that was produced this year! VERY young sheng! Also very strong cha qi. I am super energized :)

Love the lingering aftertaste. This one’s a keeper!

2009 Nan Mu Chun “Wu Liang Mountain Blue Label” Raw Puerh

Nice oak aroma with very nice young muscadine contrasting astringency and sweetness. There seems to be plenty of immediate numbing to the back of the tounge and warmness to the lower jaw and upper chest. This one has good strength and and the liquor is full in the mouth. I’m glad I picked this one up on my last YS purchase!
