Thrift Store/Estate/Garage Sale Finds?

I get almost all my fancy-pants ceramics at thrift stores. :) I have quite a collection at this point! I’m collecting the scallop-edge, gold trimmed Anchor/Fire-King pieces. I have some bowls, plates, a couple mugs and TWO creamers. :) Sadly the saucer pictured is missing its gold.

I’ve been on a yellow color kick lately so I’m loving that yellow teacup! A very nice collection, you have a good eye for cups!

OMGsrsly said

Yeah, that yellow one is bling-tastic – it’s mostly gold on the inside. It was a gift and they got it at an antique shop. Scared to think how much that one cost! I usually spend under $5.

These are so pretty! All I have is regular coffee cups. I’m in desperate need of some dainty, pretty tea cups!

You all have inspired me to look for tea related items at thrift stores, Goodwill, garage sales, & auctions.

Some nice finds posted here.

Return of the Thrift finds Pt 3. dramatic music plays Lol!

So today was a good full rich day. And I have very few days that I can say that about and actually mean it as completely as I do right now.
Started off with a good session of Diablo 3. (Yes, I’m a gamer geek) Then my parents picked me up and we went to a nearby convention (which was free to get in). It was mostly miniatures games with a very small vendor area, but I saw some spectacular painting and possibly a game I want to check into buying/playing. But I left without buying a thing, which I don’t think I’ve ever done before.
Then lunch. Then my Mom and I stopped at Savers (which is like Goodwill) and someone must have donated their Asian collection because there was a bunch of Asian themed things and I hit a teapot jackpot. All three of these for about $13.

The regular Japanese pot with the wooden handle I found with the regular dishware stuff. Yay for finding a teapot that is both usable and pretty. It even has a little mesh strainer on the inside over the spout.

The cast iron and the little yixing(?) pots I found with the misc stuff like picture frames and knicknacks. I’m bummed that the cast iron one doesn’t have a lid or a strainer, though I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t use it even if it did. Anyone know if I can buy a replacement lid from anywhere? Google and ebay didn’t turn up anything useful.

The yixing(?), which I put in ‘?’ because I’m not sure if I should call it that, I found as I was walking to the check out. I’m pretty sure I made an embarrassing squeak noise when I saw it though I don’t remember getting any weird looks about then. This thing is smaller than my hand. So cute! Unfortunately the little strainer thing inside had either broken off when it was donated (thankfully they didn’t toss it if so) or someone poked it and it broke, so that was rattling around inside. But the lid fits really well and it has a pretty flower design on one side and some writing on the other. There’s a stamp on the bottom and two on the inside of the lid, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything, right?
If anyone has any recommendations on if I should fix the strainer, with what, or just leave it, I’d appreciate it. I don’t think I’ll actually use this one either since it’s just so darn tiny and I’m worried about things like getting poisoned and stuff. Lol.

That’s awesome! Sadly I know nothing about yixing pots, so I’m afraid I can’t help.

Huh. I bet you could reattach that strainer, since it seems to still be in one piece (which I was not expecting when you said the strainer was broken! I thought it’d be in a bunch of little pieces).

The two small pots are Jian Shui clay. You can find a similar blossom pot at crimsonlotustea.com.

Reviving this again since I’ve got a bunch of stuff I’ve found. Seriously I need to cut back since now I have more than I can display. Especially now. XD;

http://tinyurl.com/Hall-Pfaltzgraff – The blue pot is a Hall which my Mom gave me (She found it in the basement in a bunch of stuff). And the other is a Pfaltzgraff that I found at Goodwill. According to my Mom this is an expensive pot, but I just loved it for the color and shape. The Pfaltz is a rich dark brown with lighter brown ‘drippings’ and the Hall is a royal blue with gold accents.

http://tinyurl.com/DoughnutFrogTeacup – The, uhhh, Doughnut(?) teapot I found at Goodwill. Same with the lustreware teacup & saucer (which is a gold/yellow with blue accents). The frog teapot I found kinda buried in a cabinet at a hoarder’s estate sale. All this person collected was frogs & lions/tigers. It was…vaguely alarming. XD

http://tinyurl.com/BDayTeapots – This was my birthday present from my Mom. Apparently she stopped at a church rummage sale and they had an army of teapots (she said probly about 25 or 30? Maybe more but I can’t remember exactly). They were all ‘make an offer/donation’ sort of prices so she picked these out because she thought were the neatest.
I’m totally bummed that I wasn’t there since I was helping a friend move at the time, though I probly would’ve gotten more than I should’ve. XD;
Out of the ones she got me, I like the one in the very front, the blue one to the upper right of that one (The handle does this neat little split at the top. Unfortunately it’s pretty badly cracked on the underside near the spout and whoever had it before kept using it for tea, so it’s got this brown line/cracking showing right through the white. But that won’t matter on a shelf.), and the middle one in the back row. The handle is a cast metal with screws securing it to the pot and it’s a hexagonal shape, which I think is pretty different.

That’s it aside from a bunch of collectors plates that I got at the hoarder’s estate sale to hang in my kitchen (big cat themed….the plates, not the kitchen. XD;). I really do need to knock it off since the shelves I’d put up for my pots are all full and even if I put another up it’ll be full with just half of these. /Sigh/ I’d put them in my curio cabinet, but that’s full of my Scar pins & Pokemon stuff (yes, I’m a huge geek). XD #teacollectorproblems
Lol!

So pretty!

Wow, what a great haul! I love all 3 in the back to the right. Your donut teapot is really original too. And that blue teapot from the first pic is so pretty. I’ve found two cute little teapots from my local Value Village a few months back but couldn’t figure out how to post them here. I’ve been using both a lot.

Ubacat – That White teapot with the flowers is actually my least favorite of the group. XD That doughnut teapot was one I just couldn’t pass up. It was just too odd.
To post my pictures, I upload them onto my Photobucket account then use tinyurl.com to shorten the url so it doesn’t take up an obnoxious amount of space. Lol.

Ubacat said

I think that white teapot is sooo petty. Thanks for the tip on posting. I’ll have to set up a Photobucket account!

If shipping wasn’t bound to be atrocious up to Canada, I’d totally find out what my Mom paid for it and sell it to you. XD
No problem with the photos. Glad to help.

Ubacat said

Really? That’s so kind of you but I suppose the shipping would be crazy especially on a teapot! I’ll keep scouting around my local second hand stores and see what I can find.

Here are my Value Village Finds. The yellow cup is not a find. I just stuck it in to show how tiny the teapot is. Both are about the same size. Thanks again Shadowfall for letting me know where to set up my photos:

SO CUTE

Those are so cute. I love that the second one is a complete set. Alot of times I find something like that and it’s missing something (usually the lid of the teapot. _

Ubacat said

It looks hardly used either and was pristine clean. The other little teapot was well used and needed a good cleaning. I didn’t know if I would used that one that much but it’s turned out to be the one I like the most. It’s a heavy ceramic so it holds the temperature well. Funny thing is I was looking for a tiny blue teapot when I went into Value Village and I found two. I was also mentioning to someone about the blue patterned plates my mother used to have when I was a kid and the tea set has a similar type pattern.

This is not a thrift store find but a friend (who’s not into tea) was downsizing and had this in her china cabinet. It was a gift from an Asian friend and she never used it. So she gave it to me! I was so excited. Just love it. There’s two yixing pots. One is without a handle – kind of like a Gaiwan. I so lucky to have a friend like her and so glad she thought of me. Anyone ever see anything like this? I was wondering what all the writing on the pots and cups were.

I love that the cups are white inside so you can see the tea’s actual color.

I liked that too Marzipan. The yixing set I got from Teavivre has unglazed clay cups. I prefer the cups glazed.

Why don’t I have friends like that? Enjoy, it’s beautiful !

She said it would have just gone to the thrift store if I hadn’t taken it. She remembered how much I love tea.
