tea ice creams!

Looking through the search (not sure how thorough it is), I didn’t really see a thread on specifically ice cream.

Have you seen any mass produced tea ice cream on the shelves near you? Or maybe you have a recipe for some ice cream to share!

Here’s a couple I’ve seen:
I was in Kroger picking up stuff to make some peach tea cupcakes and couldn’t resist looking at the ice cream. Lo and behold: https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/999990_10200396690788851_1712491444_n.jpg
Not just chai ice cream, chai ice cream with chocolate ginger cookies. And if you have their little loyalty card it’s only $1.87 for the pint!

I’ve previously mentioned a company called High Road Craft Ice Cream that makes a Thai tea flavor, they’re in Whole Foods and Fresh Market stores. If you can make it to Atlanta on a weekend they have a factory store and sometimes have others like genmaicha.

I will report back upon trying the chai ice cream.

I’ve made quite a bit of tea ice cream. I use a basic ice cream custard recipe, one that isn’t too heavy on cream and just infuse the milk with tea by taking a guess at the quantities/time.

I love matcha ice cream too but when I attempted to make it myself the tea I was using was terrible and added nearly no flavour.

I had this one the other day:

It was good.

Ah! I was wondering if they had any tea related ice creams since there’s the coffee one. They’re opening a scoop shop here soon so I’m going to definitely have to try that one!

You are lucky. I recommend trying every single flavour. I do not like them all, but I appreciate them. Last winter there was a smokey fig pudding ice cream that had lapsang in it. It was quite tasty too.

That sounds really intriguing, I have a feeling that I am going to spend a lot there haha. I think they’d already been in Fresh Market but I saw one was like $12 for the pint and got out of there quickly.

Yes, the pints are expensive. The serving sizes are smaller than most ice cream places, but I am always content when I am done. I would rather have a smaller amount of unique, quality ice cream than a larger amount of low quality known flavors. We have another place here in town that does unique flavors, but their quality is poor. Their ice cream is like pancakes. It looks great, but you are bored half way through.

I LOVE magnolia’s green tea ice cream! It’s very rich, creamy and good tea flavor.
They are a Filipino ice cream company, so they have some exotic flavors like Ube (mmm purple) and Halo Halo. I love all their ice creams, but I’ve been too chicken to try the corn cheese one.
(edit, they apparently have a Thai Tea flavor.. I need to find it!)

I find their ice creams in often in large asian grocery stores. Actually, hitting asian grocery stores you’ll find a pretty good selection of green tea ice cream.

I tried this recently and liked it a lot:

I’ve seen this brand at a bunch of local (NYC) grocery stores lately. They also have Masala Chai and Ginger Matcha, which I haven’t tried yet. It looks like their distribution’s limited to NY, NJ, and CT at the moment, though.

Oh man I am so making Earl Grey ice cream now.

the chai ice cream isn’t bad but it won’t harden back up from the drive home and I can’t stand the texture :[ I guess I’ll make it into milkshakes. the caramel in there is an interesting little touch too.

We just partnered with the amazing folks at Sweet Science Ice Cream, which means this month’s special flavor is Chai Tea.. made with our own Laoshan Village Chai!!

For anyone in the Twin Cities (or even the midwest), I can’t recommend Sweet Science enough. Seriously the best ice cream I’ve ever tried, and I love trying new ice cream! Creamy, perfect texture, fantastic flavor. We met at a foodie event in May.. Ashlee at Sweet Science tried our Chai and we tried her ice cream. We ended up falling for each other’s products and philosophies, so now she works out of our commercial kitchen! We share our retail space so that anyone can come and try her fantastic ice cream any time. :D

We had folks out the door last Saturday for the first ice cream tasting, and it’s been a struggle for me not to have a little cup of the ice cream each day.. luckily, there were two test pints of CHAI that “someone” has to take care of. :D Love my job!!

In the next few months, we’re going to play with matcha (Laoshan Green!) milkshakes and other fun ice-cream+tea floats… and what about Laoshan Green Ice Cream? Tieguanyin ice cream??? I’ll be sure to post pictures of anything that turns out well here! Maybe we’ll even figure out how to send ice cream out to our friends around the country…!

That is SO neat! Those all sound like they will be amazing ice creams, Laoshan Black Chocolate Genmaicha would be my suggestion though really I don’t think you guys can go wrong with anything in ice cream form just like tea.

Perhaps word will spread and it’ll really help get things rolling! I know this company down here had Whole Foods begging to loan them money to get production equipment (their original intent was to provide ice cream to restaurants only) so they could be in stores, now they’re in a couple other chains, and you can buy it online from fab.com, Dean & Deluca (who will ship it!), they’ve been in a couple magazines all over the course of about 2-3 years. The only problem is it’s sooooo expensive to ship ice cream since it definitely has to be overnight, maybe visiting is the best idea…

I have toyed with the idea of getting an ice cream maker so that I could make tea ice cream. I love cold tea when the weather is hot, but I usually do not care for any sweetness in it, so I thought it would be fun to make unsweetened black tea ice cream with milk.

It’s not the best day of the year in NJ to be thinking about making ice cream, but I just wanted to report on my first experience making green tea ice cream.

I had no previous experience with matcha so this was a crapshoot. Found a vendor on ebay selling it in 1 ounce increments for about 5.50 an ounce. (does anyone know if that’s a good price?)

I used this recipe:
http://www.justonecookbook.com/recipes/green-tea-ice-cream-matcha-ice-cream/

And it came out amazing!! So amazing that I ate the whole thing in a couple of hours and then couldn’t sleep. But it was worth it.
