The Cupboard: How are you using it?
i use it as a log of what i actually have in my tea cabinet :) it helps me decide what id like to drink (me being lazy and not wanting to look through my mass of teas) but on occasion ill peek through my stash and find i havent logged it :)
I did just join the site, but I’m using it for anything I have more than a sample of or anything I need to get because I always have it on hand (like Kiwi Pear Green tea — I’m down to only one bag, but I put it in because it is one of my staples). I had to think on it, but I did go ahead and put in teas I don’t really care for that I just happen to have.

Carolyn – I too feel the same way as you…I am now questioning my computer skills…I would love to put anything as well but I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

Primarily hung up on what would go in and when would I pull them out. I’ve resolved that by refusing to put samples in the cupboard or teas I strongly dislike and intend to get rid of post-haste. I am time-constrained so I need to look for efficiencies. The Cupboard looked like a massive time-suck when I first contemplated it.
I am new to this, but I am slowly adding all the teas I own in the Cupboard here. Right now, I added pretty much my loose tea collection, but am not sure about adding bagged tea — my collection is very eclectic — many companies, many different types — but some I have 50 bags but others only a few …. I am going to continue reading this post subject and see if I can make up my mind whether to add the tea bags or not!
I had a lot of single teabags in mine too, but then I decided to take most of them out because they were cluttering up my online cupboard with a bunch of teas I only have 1 bag of. I really wish there were a way in the cupboard to indicate the form of tea (bagged or loose) as well as the quantity, date acquired, etc. Even just a freeform area for personal notes would be great!
loose leaf or bagged if it isn’t enough for at least 10 cups i tend not to add it, meaning my cupboard is pretty bare (online!) – i just feel i’d forget to take it out when it was gone – wow 50 bags of one type of tea – was it a wholesale / bulk kind of order?
I just finished adding most of my loose teas to the Cupboard and the sheer volume (variety) of bagged teas is a bit daunting right now … and like I said, some I have a lot of, some only one or two …. I just have to decide on a policy (i.e., at what volume/# of packs do I add, etc.), stick with it, and then find time to add it to the cupboard. Bear with me, please! But, yes, we do belong to two warehouse clubs and also, when visiting ethnic food stores, I tend to buy teas that I really like in bulk (bad habit, I know). New year’s resolution: not to buy in bulk!
I am adding loose teas of which I’ve purchased 100 grams or more. I’m not listing samples; I’d rather ascertain whether I like them enough to buy a bag, and list them if I do.
I’m not sure how I’m ultimately going to use it, but right now I’m putting things in there that are loose leaf from specialty shops. Since I just started buying those, it’s a convenient record of everything I have. For that reason, I am considering leaving them there as a record of what I’ve had over time, but I haven’t decided yet whether that’s what I’ll ultimately do.
I’ve decided to change the way I do my cupboard! I’m going to add everything now, unless the amount I have is only enough for one cup. I think I’m in denial about how much tea I have (!!!) by not listing my samples, many of which are enough for several cups!
Cool! I list anything I have two or more servings of, partly so I remember I have them and need to drink them. :-) I really wish we could add notes/ or an acquisition date, and then sort by date so I can easily see what is oldest and needs to be drank!
Yeah I don’t had single cup/bags unless I have butt load of them and I know I won’t be getting to some for a while. I did that w/ my TTB bags cuz I took something like 18.
I think that’s a great plan. I haven’t been listing samples, unless their big sample tins like in the Upton samplers. I haven’t been listing tea bags from my starter group. I have been lazy and not listed some teas I have that would require me to create a new entry in the database. There are some I just forgot to add when I got them, but I’ve been adding them as I drink them to write notes. I’ve also been taking out those I no longer have, though I’d considered using the cupboard as a master list, because it’s too confusing since I think of a cupboard as a cupboard and not a list.
My cupboard contains all of my loose tea’s (no tea bags though). If I run out of a loose tea and plan to replace it, I leave it there. If I do not plan to re-order a tea, I remove it. Simple eh?
I’m on another community group called Ravelry and we have a page like the cupboard called “stash” where you can list all the yarn you have. Well, I use the cupboard like I do my stash. I list all the teas I have and remove them when I don’t have them.
Edit: of course, I don’t have a lot of tea right now so this might change. I could see having a note section for each tea that you have would be useful to add things like purchase date and about how much you have left and what form it is in.
I love Ravelry! I don’t do the whole stash thing but you can’t beat it for patterns, especially for purchasing patterns from independent designers. I just got something from Keiran Foley today:
I “stashed” some of my yarns on Ravelry, but I’m not too serious about it since thus far most of the yarns I’ve bought have been acrylics from Smiley’s and “kitchen cotton” from Michaels — i.e., nothing I could imagine anyone wanting to swap for. I’ve been crocheting for about a year and just finished my first fitted garment, so major investments in baby alpaca still lie in the future.
BTW, Doulton started a Steepsterites group on Ravelry a few months back. It seems to be dormant, but it’s there if you’d just like to represent.:)
