Bad tea day!

Oh boy this thread should be a place to write down your mistakes and mess ups with brewing tea!

Off we go today my assam failed → to mutch leaf and forgot it was brewing so bitter as hell… and my green tea got screwed because of to hot water. Feels bad when u mess up one time with expensive tea, but i had this whole day long today, bah!

Not so much a mistake with brewing tea, but I was a little overenthusiastic about a second steep and burned the whole front half of my tongue. I couldn’t taste fully for the rest of the day :( Even more sadly, I tend to do this more often than I care to admit, haha.

I love the idea for this thread. There’s been many a day I’ve wished to lament something about my tea and only being able to do so in the tasting notes. Mostly because my Mom is sick of hearing about tea/doesn’t really care. Lol!

Lately I’ve been having days where nothing seems to taste right and everything is dissapointing. This goes for new teas I’ve been looking forward to trying that just don’t do it for me, and teas I’ve had before that I thought I liked, but then turn out blah. By then I’ll either quit tea for the day, or make something that I’m absolutely certain I love. Usually I quit because I’d hate to make a beloved tea and have a blah experience with it too.

Jennkay – I’ve done that, but I burned my tongue tasting something I was cooking for dinner and then wasn’t able to taste the new tea I had just brewed to try.

darky-When I forget about tea, I just dump out a little bit and add some fresh hot water. That dilutes the tea and fixes pretty much all of the oversteepings.

Yesterday I took a tea bath. I accidentally spilled a fresh cup of tea on my lap. I was so looking forward to that tea too.

That’s a great tip! Thanks!

No problem. I hope it helps.

Really butiki? I thought of doing it but i believed it wouldn’t make a difference because the bitterness would just still be there but in more water… going to try it once i make a other mistake (hope it don’t happen soon)

Happy that this topic is taking off!

Oh yeah, it works well. If its just an oversteep, I dump a little out, add water, taste, dump a little out, add water, taste, and keep repeating until it tastes just right. I’ve definitely been able to remove all astringency doing this.

that tea bath… i had something almost the same happen a week or 2 ago. I did mis one step on the stairs while going down to the kitchen. I the process of falling i dumped all tea over myself and the glass pot fell broken into a million pieces!

Oh man, sorry to hear that.

Awesome thread idea! Lately I’ve had disappointing luck with rooibos, the ones I’ve gotten have been too sweet and very one flavored :( and tasting entirely different than what I was expecting. Oh, and also, a lamentation I have quite often – the kettle at my work always makes my teas taste funny. I might buy a new one, because I really can’t stand how it makes some of my favorite teas taste so darn horrible!

A while back now, I had a few mishaps that stick out in my mind – breaking my DavidsTea gongfu glass teapot (bought a new one, so that was ok) and breaking the saucer on my gaiwan from Verdant (much sadder, as I never did replace). Hoping I don’t have any of those in a while, but they stand out as bad tea days!

Arrrggggg. I totally have tea tummy. I have lots of new teas to try and have been slowly moving though them today. Although it could also be something I ate, or I did have this chia seed drink I bought at the store, my tummy is sore. So I decided to drink more tea to calm it down. But the more I drink, the worse it gets. So its not really that I made a mistake making the tea, but I guess the mistake is not stopping when I should. I don’t want to stop drinking tea (for the day, or even for a few hours) so I am ending up just punishing my body.

I hate these kinds of days. Oh woe is me, why does my tea hate me today :(

Today I tried an Earl Grey that smelled and tasted like lemon scented floor cleaner. :(

Reminds me of when Twinings changed their Earl Grey recipe; and then had to change it back to the original because people were so outraged.

THERE WAS A COCKROACH IN MY ELECTRIC KETTLE THIS MORNING!!! EWWWWW!!! THIS IS MY WORST DAY!!!

On a related note, does anyone have any ideas about cleaning out my kettle? I’ve boiled a water and vinegar mixture in there several times now but the image of the cockroach floating in my kettle is stuck in my mind!
What should I do!!

I was just going to suggest water and vinegar. You could use something like clr, just making sure to rinse it really good after. Boiling water will kill all the germs, so maybe let it boil real good.

I think that’s what I will probably do! I already used vinegar, but I am a little hesitant to use anything stronger, but I am definitely boiling it heavily!!

If you think it’s bitter, refresh the water and it would be much better.
