Making a concentrate for reheating.
Hey folks,
So I am sitting at work today and I suddenly got the urge for a cup of tea. Alas my work set up does not allow for brewing a cuppa since all we have is a microwave. So it got me wondering if there was still a way to have my cake and eat it too. I was thinking about making a concentrate by taking say 2 ounces of water with 1 measures of tea, letting it cool, and then I figure I could now take that to work, put 2 ounces of the concentrate into a cup and top off with 4 ounces of water, then reheating in the microwave. Since the tea leaves are now not part of the water temp equation I figure I don’t have to worry so much about getting things right with the microwave. I figure I can also use this base equation (2 ounces water to 1 measure tea leaf) to scale up as much as I want so I can have as many cups per day as I want. The only thing I am wondering about is how this might affect taste. Now for the most part I only drink black teas or scented/flavored black teas (though I think I am ready to explore the world of REAL green teas…..but for now I am thinking about this being a black tea deal), so I don’t know if that will make a difference. Does anyone foresee and pitfalls, problems or degradation of potential taste quality? I can’t imagine why seeing as basically I am making iced tea that would be reheated, right? But since I am no tea expert I figured it might be worth asking here.
Thanks!
Brian
Well, it does work with chai. All those packaged chai concentrate mixes are strongly steeped tea, spices, and sugar. I think it would take some experimentation, but might be worth trying!
Is there a reason why you want it needs to be a concentrate? Could you just brew normal strength tea at home, then reheat it at work as needed?
True, I suppose I could brew it at normal strength. I just figure concentrating it would allow me to bring more to work for less space taken up in my lunch box. Might have to think about that a bit more.
