2014 New Year Resolution

I’m thinking about doing something drastic for a New Years resolution. I’m thinking about a year long tea buying hiatus. I did pretty good on a self hiatus for a few months, but it didn’t really seem to put much of a dent in my stash no matter how much I drank. I have SO much tea at home that I need to drink before it goes bad and I’m a little envious of people who have a tea stash that is under control. This idea makes buying tea right now harder to resist, especially with the black friday deals out there. There are two teas that I’d like to get before I start that I know I love and I think that is going to be it for the year. I’m trying to tell myself I can do this and resist the temptation and hoarding urge, but it is like standing on the edge of an icy pool telling myself on the next count of three that I’ll jump.

So, anyone else have any New Year’s resolution ideas yet?

So far, mine is… find a new job. Since my seasonal one will be over by then.

Awww, good luck with that! Sounds a little stressful. :(

That’s the exact same as my resolution! As of Jan. 2nd I’m unemployed again :/

Leaving my job to move to the country at the end of January. Risky, but hopefully it works out for all of us!

I think it’s a great idea, but I wonder if it might be more realistic to allow yourself 3 “cheat” days – your birthday, Black Friday, and a freebie? And with a set budget too so you don’t overboard.

I think a full year might be excruciatingly hard, especially if you continue to post on Steepster and read the forums, but the idea of drinking down your stash is a good one! I did the math for my stash and with 6 cups of tea a day, I basically have enough tea to last me 200 days. So, yeah, I understand wanting to have a manageable stash!

That would be a pretty reasonable way to approach it instead of my cold turkey method. And where did that term come from? Cold turkey. I’m going to have to google it now.

When I was on a hiatus, I did have to avoid Steepster a bit to keep from getting excited about new teas. Not sure if I can just log and not look at the discussion board. I have a feeling I’ll be doing a lot of trading to try new things!

i did swaps for a couple months instead of buying tea – that helped since there was still the excitement of packages in the mail and new teas…and it felt like i was drinking my teas faster simply because i was swapping portions of teas i had lots of, for little samples of new teas haha

My New Year’s resolution will be to read 75 books in the year (same as this year, totally finished it last month, woo!) and to make sure I blog 6 days out of the week. Not too unreasonable I think _

I have never blogged partially because I’m concerned about the amount of time it takes. How much time to you generally spend a day blogging? Reading more is a good goal too! That and more exercise.

Hmm, I spend several hours reviewing teas and logging them in my notebook for future blog posts, but the actual writing itself usually only takes about half an hour…unless I get distracted by something.

Dustin said

That isn’t a bad amount of time for the writing part! I do get distracted quite easily when it comes to writing tho. I think I once got 3 days into the NANO November novel thing. Tried starting a blog a few years ago about a new year’s resolution to not buy anything made in China for a year and didn’t get very far at all.

I tried the Nanowrimo thingy once as well, I am terrible at writing fiction, it distracts me immensely. I think because I have been writing informative type things for years that I am able to do it fairly quickly, what with all the practice :)

Buy Puerh and then it will never go stale!

Tea related: Keep my stash number hovering around 20 and continue to tame my buying impulse.

Non-tea related: Attain a full-time job with benefits soon after graduation. And since I’m a writing student, write a little bit every day and never give up the dream!

Tea related resolutions – Narrow down what I prefer to drink and stop buying ‘a little bit of this and a little bit of that’ to try.

Non Tea Related – I want to play through all of the video games I own. Most of them I started playing and then just stopped for some reason or another. So I want to revisit them all and see what I still like and what I don’t. (A ulterior motive to this is so that I can start paring down and selling the ones I don’t like). A side goal would be to finish as many as I can all the way through to the end (but at least 1/4). Seeing as I have about 90 games over 7 different systems, I have quite a bit to keep me occupied
.
I’m considering adding a goal to do a read through/weed out of my bookshelves aswell. I have two 8ft tall shelves overflowing with books (some shelves double rowed), plus stacks on the floor, and I really should start getting rid of the stuff I just don’t read, or have never read, before. Since I work in a bookstore, I’m always bringing something home and it’s become really quite out of hand. Lol.

7 game systems?! Wow, that is impressive! At least you can sip down your tea while gaming or reading!

that is a resolution that I wish I felt allowed to make lol!!
I don’t have so many games, I tend to get hyper-focued on a few and I haven’t had anytime to play even those!

Oooh, that is a fantastic resolution! Which systems do you own?

I applaud your tea hiatus resolution. I also need to stop buying tea, but have been an abject failure so far. My goal is to reach the point where I have less than 4 months’ supply on hand (right now I am at 8 months, not including a Black Friday purchase). This is a step up from my 2013 resolution to only place one order per month (13 orders in 11 months: not too bad).

My other goal is to actually retire. I gave notice in February but have accepted small additional tasks all year and am committed through January at half-time.

I have no idea how many months worth of tea I have at my house, but I’m guessing I could make it through a year at least!

What are you going to do with all your free time once you are retired?

Drink tea.

Seriously, I have a number of other hobbies, some of which I share with my grandkids. I may work part-time, and hope to play a lot of golf.

My goal is to only buy the teas I currently have on my shopping list so that I stop impulse shopping. There are 40 something teas on my list. I’m genuinely curious about them, and that I think I’ll enjoy them much more than many of my impulse buys. I’d also like to try more single estate Darjeeling teas.

My non-tea goal is to run a 10k next fall. I started the couch to 5k plan five weeks ago and it’s going well. Hopefully I’ll be able to build up my endurance and run longer distances over the coming year.

You could do swaps to try the things on your shopping list :)

That’s a great idea, Sil. It would be a much kinder to my pocketbook, and I could test-drive some of the teas before committing to multiple ounces.

On that note, I wish more tea companies let you buy just one ounce. There’s very few teas that I want 3.5 – 4 ounces of. Okay, I’m done now. :)

Haha many of us feel the same way! If you’re open to swapping with Canada, i can probably help cross a few off your list in the new year – just send me a PM.

I would love that! Thanks.

I just did my first 10k last weekend! What worked for me is upping the mileage on say, your weekend run at a slower pace, and do shorter, faster runs a couple times a week. The hard part is to keep your breathing steady. Also, find a running buddy…that helps a lot! I had my husband, who’s run 2 marathons, so he kept me going. Good luck!

@Tealizzy – Congrats on your 10k! That’s awesome. And thanks for the advice. I’m not even running a 5k yet and my breathing is already a problem. :/ I wish I had a running buddy. My best friend and I used to work out together, but she recently moved so I’ve been using my runs as my downtime after homework/dinner. So far so good!

I need to run tea down before buying more and only keep decent quantities of tea that I really love.
