Thought you all might enjoy this...

I got the following email from a friend today…

I have some old tins of tea that my mother had. They came from Hong Kong. They are 25 years old or older. The seals have not been broken. Will the tea be any good?

Yeah, it made smile too, and no I don’t think there is any chance it is puerh.

I’d give it the old college try! I’m a bit nuts though.

Pretty much what I said. I once found a few Bigelow bags that were possibly a decade old. They were sealed and were amazingly still pretty good. So you never know.

Can’t wait to read the tasting notes! You are going to offer to take the tins off your friend’s hands, yes? ;)

I begged him not to throw them out without trying them. Kind of hoping he might offer me the tins to ‘check out’ for him. I’m not entirely sure he plans to do anything with them at least yet. His mom has been in a nursing home for a couple years so I think if he was going to try them he already would have. Maybe emotionally he isn’t quite ready to deal with it. I hope to at least get a look at them for a better idea of what they are. At minimum it is an opportunity to talk about his mom and her love of tea.

Understand that. Got weepy last weekend over a fruitcake tin of buttons.

g my mom has been asking for a long time, what she could give me of hers that would mean something to me. I finally relented and pointed out her cabinet full of tea pots. I asked for the story behind some of them. She gave me one that dad bought her on their honeymoon and a set that was her mother’s from their 50th wedding anniversary. Neither set has ever been used for tea but the stories are priceless. Yeah, I was a little misty myself.

Can you imagine if it was pu’erh?

I think it’s sweet that your friend sent you the email. He could have just tossed the tins, but instead he reached out. Glad you were there for him!

I agree. He does read my blog occasionally but never talks about tea.
