What Brought You To Steepster?

I was starting to re-try teas from David’s Tea that I thought I liked but really didn’t. I figured there HAD to be something where I could rate my tea with a short blurb, and some website or app would keep it forever and ever. Untappd exists for beer, Delectable exists for wine…surely there must be one for tea.

And enter Steepster. I joined right away, and didn’t even realize there was this “talk to other people” feature. I just thought it was a way for me to keep track of what I liked and what I didn’t. The first time I realized other people had access to what I wrote was when someone clicked the heart beside my first tea log. The rest is history. And then I started paying attention…did you know there are a whole ton of tea logs you can actually READ at the bottom of each tea page?! As George Takei would say… “oh myyyyy”

Almost exactly four years ago, in January or February 2010, I was working on some serious weight loss and decided I was drinking way too much Diet Coke and needed a healthier substitute. I’ve always liked the idea of tea, and I’d tried to get into it before, but I was never able to make a decent cup. Everything tasted like hot water to me, particularly green teas. I knew the problem was user error because all those tea drinkers can’t be wrong, right? But I didn’t know how to fix the problem.

I set about trying to find out how to make a decent cup of tea, and as I usually do when I’m on a bit of a project, I started reading extensively, primarily on the internet. I bought a few starter teas, and read more. During one of those research sessions I came across some Steepster notes so I decided to check out the site and then decided to join.

What I loved, and still love, about Steepster is that it is such a nice, civilized place. People are kind, generous, and respectful even when they’re teasing each other, and the drama is so minimal it’s virtually non-existent. In the early 90s I was a sysop in the CompuServe Gamers forum (dating myself here). The Gamers forum had a similar atmosphere, until the AOL merger and the influx of the hordes of badly behaved kids who have made internet gaming sites intolerable to me now. ;-)

So, long story short, I came for the tea information and stayed for the company. :-)

I personally joined to be part a tea community where we can talk about nothing but teas! I wanted to see what others are drinking and perhaps I can share my own experience. And also, spread the word around for The Persimmon Tree Tea Company.

I was looking for certain teas and Steepster discussions consistently brought themselves up, same with looking up tea company ratings and reviews. I began to use Steepster to look up multiple tea companies. Decided to join in order to “Give back” to the community.

I stumbled on this site while researching everything I can about tea. You see, just a few months ago I was a tea bag drinker. I enjoyed the relaxing effect of my afternoon tea, but found it needed milk and sugar to make it palatable. I had never tried loose leaf tea… In February I jumped at the chance to become an Independent Consultant with Steeped Tea, mainly because I viewed it as a terrific business opportunity. Since then I have learned tea is so much more. I want to learn everything I can. I love having the opportunity to go into schools and have children sample non-sweetened iced rooibos saying “Wow, this is good.” They have no idea how good it is for them. I never realized how tea has a magical way of bringing people together. I also had little knowledge of the wonderful health benefits of tea, outside of knowing it is good for me. Currently, the pollen count outside is extremly high. For the first time in my life, I am not suffering a severe allergic reaction as a result. Thanks to tea, I feel perfectly fine. This is like a dream come true. I am no longer a pill popper searching for relief, but never finding it. I also love knowing as I sip my tea I am no longer ingesting pesticides and artificial ingredients. I had no idea what I had been ingesting into my body all those years. I can certainly taste the difference of natural ingredients. As I write this I am sipping on a cuppa Nettle Greek Mountain Organic Herbal Tea. So yummy, no sweetner needed. This is the life…

This is the same exact post you made on the other thread…

It also sounds like something a homeopath would say. Whole bunch of craziness. Tea can’t get rid of seasonal allergies. Geez.

I joined Steepster last year when doing a Google search. I can’t remember what I was looking for but I’ve always enjoyed teas. I wasn’t very active at first because my browser was always freezing and I couldn’t participate in any discussion. I’ve always enjoyed bagged and loose tea before Steepster but always thought it would be great to try out so many of the different green teas of China and Japan. I just didn’t know so many online places had popped up over the years. I had ordered from Culinary Teas years ago ( maybe 10 years ago?) when the exchange rates were outrageous and the shipping was super high (still is). The exchange and shipping were just too high I never ordered again even though I enjoyed all those loose teas. Now I can’t believe how many places there are as well as local shops (other than Whole Foods). I haven’t gotten into the swap thing yet but would love to do some down the road.

I dabbled in tea here and there, but it didn’t really become so prominent in my life until recently. I had been stalking various tea companies on facebook for awhile, and finally made my first Adagio order sometime in the fall, through which I discovered TeaChat. Unfortunately the forums over there were pretty stagnant, hardly anyone was participating. I found a link to Steepster through TeaChat, and really liked the setup. It’s less intimidating than TeaChat, which is more a traditional forum like FPN (fountainPenNetwork). Steepster is like forum+blogfeed=awesome. I lurked for awhile, then I joined. Now you can’t get me to shut up about it.

I stumbled on Steepster via Google while trying to find an alternative to Teavanna’s tasty but overpriced blueberry kona pop. Little did I know how far down this rabbit hole would lead, a cabinet full of wonderful loose leaf teas along with all the paraphernalia to make cups of goodness. This little community has done an amazing job of making the loose leaf tea experience not only accessible but fun!
